    The toned paper is good for letting the paper itself do part of the work for you and so leaving it showing for the midtones and drawing in the lights and darks. I use toned paper all the time with black and white charcoal.

      I'm getting toned gray for charcoal and graphite and toned tan for colored pencils

  • @SarahRenaeClark
    @SarahRenaeClark 2 ปีที่แล้ว +118

    I was surprised when I first tried the tan paper too. It’s so popular that I expected it to be thicker and more textured.
    I liked the final results (mainly the contrast of lighter colors against the mid tone background) but it’s definitely NOT my favorite paper to work with. I’ve barely used it.

  • @YoitsSarahx
    @YoitsSarahx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    This is so real and genuine.. I remember that day when I wanted to buy stuff that’s more affordable but better (a step up from cheap supplies) and then I buy this paper and pencils (these both get recommended by really good artists) I was so disappointed with them and wondered “how are these artists making amazing art with those” but I realised we always need to buy our own supplies instead of buying something from a good artist (we do this because we think we could get amazing like them) but in reality everyone is completely different! Y’all keep buying different stuff and see what suits you & your art. Buying the same supplies might make you feel more confident but that slowly goes away once you try them. Don’t compare your art either! We are all still practicing ✍️

    • @itsclo613
      @itsclo613 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is so true! I like to use tan toned strathmore paper, and prismscolors, when using art supplies it’s not about the price it’s about what you can do with it. If you can make a beautiful drawing and have a good time making it then that is the supply for you!

    • @UTBBT
      @UTBBT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      True. I remember wanting to branch out into watercolor but I couldn't afford any, so I made some with Kool Aid! Plus, it's easy (edible) finger paint for toddlers.
      I thought I needed expensive supplies also, I just needed some patience and techniques!

    I wish I could afford to join your Patreon; there’s so many artists I’d love to support/learn from there. Maybe in the future! So thankful for your TH-cam videos!!
    I’m so glad I’ve not bought those pencils, thank you for saving me from that! I’ve only ever used the toned tan sketchbook, and it’s great for graphite/charcoal drawings. I’ve never used the mixed media one or felt how smooth it is, but for the toned tan sketchbook I imagine you’re also 100% current about it being too smooth for colored pencils!
    The makeup on this reference is absolutely 🔥
    Your channel is what originally taught me about graphite transfer sheets, but every time I use them I get graphite transferred where my hand ended up resting while I was tracing. Do you think that’s the quality of the sheet or have you ever experienced that?

  • @icicles95

    It's fascinating to me to watch you hate these supplies! We are really similar artists in that we both have aphantasia and love to draw realism. These are honestly my two favourite brands of pencils, although I do agree on the skin tones in both sets, I supplement them with extra skin tones, but I love how the Arteza especially work! I really enjoy seeing how differently two artists can see products and supplies!

  • @DrawTangleswithDawn

    Could you use those same pencils that you dont like on really good paper and see if it makes a difference? I know it won't help your color options, but perhaps the pencils won't fight you as much on better suited paper?

    Think it's fairly common to use mineral spirits/pencil blends with the harder oil leds, such as the polychromos. I am not experienced with coloring pencils, but the times I've used them. I have definitely reached for the mineral spirits to create smooth blends. I feel like the vibrancy of the colors get a slight boost from it too.
    Also used Full Blender pencil from Caran d'ache to blend with, along with their Blanc White 001 pencil from the Luminance range. As the Polychromos white isn't opaque enough.

It isn’t finished but I must say, I am pleasantly surprised! It is so much fun to play around with different shades and undertones! I was making it and I stepped back for a bit to see what needed to be changed, then, your voice just popped in my head saying- push the values, add some purple for the darkest shadows, explore and just see what happens. That really took it to another level.
    Thankyou once again for helping me improve.

    here's something that I've been wanting to see for a while. I don't know if you've already done this but maybe you could try to do a self portrait of yourself. This I have wanted to see for a while. It would be amazing to see!
