      That's why they started with the flex format. They knew where things were headed but couldn't make it official before schedules were due. Aside from rivalries...note they scheduled half the big ten for double games against non rivalry opponents. It will be no issue plugging the two universities in those slots for half their games and schedule them the opposite dual team those weeks they lost their double game opponent.
      It's designed specifically to be flexible for this reason

    I like this format because then it gets the other big ten teams a chance to go to the big ten championship game now the big ten championship games are now going to be the toughest conference and make really good games.

      the real reason for not going to 9 is that ESPN wasn't going to pay extra for the 9th game in either 24 or 25, but '26 brings an opportunity to renegotiate the deal for more money to bring a 9 game conference slate.

  • @calebward9284
    @calebward9284 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I would argue that there are some forced rivalries on here. Plus, there are some other rivalries that should be protected, yet aren’t.
    Maybe the Big Ten had every school list all their rivalries and order them, from most to least important. But I’m surprised by these results.
    Why does a school like Iowa deserve three protected rivalries while Penn State gets none? I’m no PSU fan but that looks b.s. to me.

    • @kevg715
      @kevg715 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly every designated B1G rivalry that Penn State has had feels forced. The school was kind of on its own geographically right after joining the conference. Ohio State and Michigan are usually the biggest games on the calendar but we know we'll never be their biggest game, although Ohio State is as close to a natural rival within the conference in terms of geography and competitive games over the past decade or so. Not sure why the conference didn't protect that game, unless that ended up being the difference between allowing every school to play each other home and away over a four-year period.
      Michigan State never really caught on as a real rival no matter how much the conference tries to make the Land Grant Trophy a thing.
      While I think Maryland and Rutgers see Penn State as their big game, that feeling isn't reciprocated. Plus I'm guessing the B1G wants to limit those two always playing the "big three" in the east all the time. I don't know if there was a way to do it without messing up what it looks like the conference is intending to do, though. In essence, I think our only real rival is Pitt, and I never really got to experience that as someone who graduated from Penn State in 2010 and hasn't been back to the state of PA since.

    The expanded playoffs will change everything. You potentially could have 5 - 8 Big ten teams in the playoffs every year. It's not inconceivable that Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, UCLA and USC would make the playoffs every year. Add to that Washington and Oregon and it could be as many as 7 on an annual basis. Besides those schools Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois are often in the top 16. So, potentially that could put half of the playoff field in the Big Ten. That will take a lot of pressure off of programs to 'win' every game. A team with one or two losses could still make it. What it should do is cause the elite teams to play harder non-conference schedules so that with a loss they are still in the top 12.

      I would’ve loved Penn St as a protected rival but I understand the B1G’s thinking. Have the 4 anchor schools (Ohio St, Penn St, USC, Michigan) play 2 of each other every year to keep competitive balance. With Michigan being our protected game, we will alternate Penn St & USC every other year. So in ‘24 we have Michigan & Penn St. Michigan has Ohio St & USC. Penn St has Ohio St & USC. USC has Penn St & Michigan. Then it alternates the following year as USC/Penn St are protected games with each other the first 2 years. I expect that to stay the same in ‘26 & beyond. Should BIG get rid of its conference championship game in 2024 and beyond, despite the $$$ revenue generated? I believe it should, and here's my reasoning... In that year, the [my bad, the FBS] playoff series will expand from four to 12. I'm guessing that this means that a good three teams from BIG will be in the playoff, two at-large teams in seeds 5-12 and one of the top four who [has] the first-week bye. I believe that BIG should determine the conference champion by formula, [and] not by the two best teams playing because these two best will undoubtedly make the playoffs anyway. Additionally, the following week after a possible BIG championship game could see the start of the playoff games involving the eight at-large teams, because the season can't go beyond the second week of January to end the season. And UCLA in 2024 will play @LSU, @Hawaii, @Michigan, Ohio State, and USC, which will be travel-heavy and encompass a high-degree of difficulty, not to discount the other BIG teams UCLA will play. Bring it on, looking forward to it!

      @Will Muny Forgive me are you are you arguing that wins by John McKay and Pete Carroll are somehow relevant in 2024? What does that have to do with Lincoln Riley versus Jim Harbaugh or Ryan Day? Has Lincoln Riley ever proven he's capable of putting together a national championship caliber defense? Has he ever won a playoff game?

      @Will Muny Discounting what Ryan Day did in 2020 simply because you want too is amusing and Ohio State went toe to toe with defending national champion Georgia for 60 minutes and lost 42-41. Meanwhile USC gave up 16 points in the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter and lost to Tulane, not counting two losses to Utah in which they gave up a combined 90 points. What does your assertion mean? USC under Lincoln Riley is going to own the entire Big 10? What claim are you making? Are they going to win the Big 10 every year? Every two years? I'd love to know so we can come back to this and see how accurate your assertions are.

      @Will Muny You claimed USC owns the entire Big 10 and when I ask what exactly that means going forward you change the subject and ask me to predict the future? I have no idea what's going to happen Will but I can't wait to find out because there are going to be an incredible number of amazing conference games to watch every season. I do know USC has LSU (neutral) , Notre Dame (home), Penn State (road) and Michigan (home) in 2024 and they'll be breaking in a new QB. I never speak in absolutes, but I find it highly unlikely they win the B1G in 2024. For the record I have nothing but respect for them as a blue blood program and I'm excited that they're joining the Big 10.

      @Will Muny 1.) We agree that USC will not regret leaving the Pac-12. 2.) Not all facts are predictive - USC is 6-4 all time against Michigan going back to 1948. Does that small sample size of games tell us anything? Does it inform your opinion about what will happen when the two schools play each other in 2024? To me the answer to both questions is no. 3.) I have denied ZERO claims I simply asked you to explain what your assertion that USC has owned the Big 10 for the past 62 years means going forward. If you think it's predictive than make a prediction, if you don't think it's predictive than why are we having this conversation?

    You need to get your facts straight, Yes, the SEC is going with 8 games in for now, probably for only a year or two before they go to 9 but they have got rid of divisions just like the Big 10 and even in the 8 game model every SEC team will play each other every 2 years and home and away every 4 years just like the Big 10 which means a tougher schedule for an SEC team because the SEC is a tougher conference from top to bottom. You have Ohio State and Michigan and Penn State after that what do you have. And just like the SEC there are some teams that are not going to play each other every year year anymore like they always have. They will still play each other every year. I realize you are trying to build up the Big 10 but don't say things that aren't true just to build up your own conference. I prefer a nine game schedule but I don't think it is that big of a deal to stay at 8. I think the bigger deal is getting rid of divisions because playing all the SEC teams in a 2 year period is going to be brutal.

      USC is going the be the one of the top 4 teams from all the recruits they’re getting and the transfers they’re getting every year they’ll be fine and overall USC is 75-30-3 against the Big Ten all time

      So which Alabama "rival" is no longer going to be played every year if they stay at 8 games? If you are correct and they will play every other opponent home and away every 4 years then they can only protect one game. I assume it's Auburn, so LSU and Tennessee will only be every other year if they stick with 8 games. The same issue happens with every other SEC team with more than one conference rival.
      I don't think the SEC is going to stick with 8 games very long though. They need the same kind of protected rivalries as the Big Ten is doing, which is not really possible with only 8 games. If they only have 8 games for 2 years they can maintain those rivalries and still get pretty close to "playing everyone home and away every 4 years" but if it goes longer than that they'll either miss out on playing some of the other teams or not play all of their rivals every year.

      you are totally correct, I am for 9 games too and I think they will go to ni9games too but my point is people are saying the SEC is killing rivalries in which it is affecting some which I don't like but the same thing is happening with the Big 10 with what they just did. There are teams that have played each other every year but now it is going to be every other year.

      SEC isn't tougher. They just think they are.

      How many years in a row now has the SEC won the national championship? and why does Big 10 teams keep losing to SEC teams in the college football playoff?
