Your fine to tow that trailer loaded you no longer need a separate test to tow a trailer you will have B+e on your license now automatically i lost mine and applied for a new one and it cane with b+e on it

The way I read it, if the pick-up is 1.5T the trailer and load couldn’t be more than 2.75T if the trailer is less than 750kg. If it’s more you can tow less 2T total weight. So you might be able to tow it depending on your vehicle weights.

Dont forget the max axle weights. If you put something heavy right at the front of your trailer as well as being unstable, your rear axle of the tow car could be over weight(especially if there is a load of stuff in the rear of the vehicle). There is usually a plate on the tow car to give you the loading limits.

And it doesn’t matter if trailer is empty as plated capacity rules. ie - if your cars plated limit was 2700kg and the trailer was plated as 3500kg (even empty) there would be an offence.
Everyone with a car licence can now tow a trailer as they changed the Law during covid to allow more tests for Lorry drivers. They did away with having to sit a trailer test. 👍

The whole trailer towing rules is so convoluted and a pain to get your head around. But I was advised that it doesn't matter if the trailer is loaded or empty. If the trailer can carry more than your allowed to tow you can't tow it. Which makes it all even more ridiculous

Realistically, it’s if you have an accident. Whether you are insured as the insurance company would have a reason to say you weren’t and once the police are there they would have to check.

Nobody has any restrictions on their license now for towing up to 3.5 tons. That’s the trailer weight.check your license on the internet should show a BE Entitlement.

There used to be a 750kg allowance for towing the small trailer you used to be able to buy at Halfords for camping and tip runs but the trailers where max rated at 750kg. Under the old rules you would be illegal for towing a braked trailer regardless if it was empty because u could of just offload
