Phill Hudson Hello Phil, I'm pleased to meet you as well! :) The world of SMW Hacking is very vast, interesting and fun! And in my opinion Nintendo is 10 years too late with Mario Maker to anyone who has knowledge of such hacks. From what it looks like at the moment, Mario Maker might have a few unique features, although programs like Lunar Magic of Super Mario Bros. X already have the level designing capabilities that Mario Maker seems to boast. Only once it comes out and we have a better look at it will I be able to truly see what it can do, although it would have been nice if it had been released a few years ago, as I just don't have the time to devote to level designing as I had a few years ago unfortunately.
Yes, you click the shell icon to enter sprite mode, click edit, then "insert manual" then that box comes up. Or press insert on your keyboard and it comes up.
It used to be done with a tool called BlockTool, although I think there's something newer out there now that everyone uses. The people at smwc.net who are up-to-date in the hacking scene would be better suited to answer your question!
Graphics might not always be included, in which case you can probably find some Toad graphics in SMWC's graphics section which you could use for it. If you insert the sprite, does it still work even though the graphics are incorrect?
I'm still new to this so I am not really sure. So far I have been able to alter the graphics so that luigi looks separate from mario and have changed the coloring on some of the characters. I dont really want to do much to this game, just some minor aesthetics and it always bugged me that Toad isn't in the game. I was hoping to add him to the bonus levels and the ending cutscene. I want him to just stand in the bonus stages and jump with the Yoshis at the ending credits but I am not having much luck on learning how to do this. I still got a long way to go.
I can't find the graphics for some of the thingz. Specifically the Thwomp. Arg I tried to insert the Boomerang bro but it broke my rom, emulator says [Bad Checksum]
Regrettably I am a little out of touch with modern SMW hacking tools, as the scene has been changing a lot as of late. Hopefully someday I will get the chance to try them out for myself! :)
Are all of your files names correctly as they are in my video? Make sure that the ASM and CFG files are the same, and that they are entered correctly into your text document. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you! Let me know if that helps. :)
Super Mario World is such a versatile game that sometimes it seems like it is possible to do almost anything with it! If people put the time into programming all of the blocks and sprites that were available in the e-Reader levels, then it would definitely be possible to make fairly convincing remakes of just about every level! it's not a matter of size, but rather how much time and dedication people are willing to put into such a task. :)
If more room is needed, there could always be things like finding a way to instantly destroy throw blocks after picking them up, that way there wouldn't need to be sand in Desert Oasis. I believe some, maybe even most, needed sprites are out there, so maybe someday I'll try to tackle it.
How much different would it be adding a block with a custom asm file (You know, that area in smw central with blocks on it, and they never give you a graphics folder, just a read me and a asm). I saw blocks as you went by them sprites, so how would I go about doing so? I got asar and xkas, I went about smw central and from what I could tell, those seemed to be important, however I got no clue in the world how to make them do anything.
Hello! If you want to insert blocks, then you're going to want to look into a tool called Block Tool Super Deluxe. You can add lots of neat new blocks into SMW with that!
The best thing to do is probably take one of the sprite disassemblies from Super Mario World Central and make a modification of an existing sprite so that it kind of resembles your own creation. You could do things like create a Para-koopa that bounces higher or a saw that moves quicker. All sorts of things are possible!
BananaFaceDude56 It has been a long time since I have inserted custom music into SMW haha. Unlike graphic insertion and sprite insertion which have stayed the same for quite a few years now, it seems like new tools for music insertion are always popping up. If I can figure out how to put a good tutorial together for it I will see what I can do! :)
Alright, well in case music won't work for a tutorial, I'd at least like to see one on custom blocks, or maybe that was mentioned in the exgfx video? I don't know, I didn't watch that my hacks don't use custom graphics for now, ha. But blocks are just so confusing! Thanks for any future help!
Hey, could you make a tutorial (if you did please give me the link) of inserting custom graphics in Overworld? Because there isn't a purple poison mushroom in the editor anymore :/
Hello! Unfortunately I've been a little out of touch with SMW hacking as of late, so I'm probably not the best person to make a video like that. Sorry!
SMW is unfortunately already fairly limiting in terms of how many unique enemies you can have in an area. Spritetool just allows you to add new enemies into that limited list while removing others.
It's very similar, except you put the files into the "generators" folder instead. I think you also want to use a sprite number for them that is C0 or higher.

+Fala Flame Sorry about the delay! Yes, you would skip the ExGFX part, as the sprite does not use any graphics. So you would just use Spritetool to insert the sprite, and then you should instantly be able to use it in Lunar Magic without problems!
AndrewsGamesDisplay Alright, thanks Andrew! I've been wanting to do some DKC2-esque things to some of my levels. Someone figured out how to make custom e-Reader levels as well. There's a document on it here: www.filedropper.com/sma4 as well as a thread on it here, with a link to a video of one of his levels: www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=24581.0 Unfortunately, I can't hex edit so I won't be able to make any unless he creates an editor, and the levels he's made don't seem to include any e-Reader custom items besides Advance Coins. The document does say it's possible, though.
That's interesting, and they even figured out how to place Advance Coins in the stages as well! It will be cool to see if this goes anywhere in the coming months, as creating a lot of levels in the way that they explain seems rather impractical. Thanks for sharing! :)
