I think it's easier to balance a hero that's powerful for about 70% of the game than one that's garbage for 50% of the game.

@@NormalHatter Night Stalker's ult makes him playable throughout most of the game. If it didn't, it means that NS would be bad for half of the game and good in the other. The balancing team would have a harder time balancing out his weak phase and his strong phase if it were a 50/50 split, because he is either too weak during the day, or too strong during the night. When there is more night, the downsides of playing him are less apparent, which makes people want to play him, and the balancing team can focus more on balancing night time rather than both times equally.

I used to spam NS mid, he either dumpsters against some matchups or he gets dumpstered. Very little middle ground. Can be super good as a later pick.
