Rick; brilliant video. I watch you religiously as you sound honest and humble. My handicap is 9 or basically my driving and iron play. lol. Thanks for the tips and tricks in all of your videos. Pity I play on sand greens in Australia. All the best Pete
Thanks, Rick I tried that Irons only thing and by the 10th hole, I was 11 over - After that, every ball I hit, I vision it was you and play the best golf of my life.
Fairly sure that Mr. S. isn't near as wealthy as a Saudi prince for those insane blades. Actually, it would be far more interesting if he tested a full set of contemporary hickory shaft clubs. What about it Rick ?
I played mostly with irons the last season. Was fighting a snap hook. My old ap1s strong lofted helped on my holes. But bought a high spin driver and found that par 5s and long par 4s it’s tough to play without taking a driver. Just dedicating to taking the driver out and working out the snap hook was key. Hitting below driving distance consistently will set you back and somewhat takes the joy outta golf.
I'm a low handicapper that plays Callaway Epic Forged. I recently hit the G710 and loved them. They feel great, look great and are forgiving. High handicap or low, it doesn't matter to me. I am a straight ball hitter. I would need to hit them on the course.
Rick. I saw these very irons at Golfers Warehouse locally. I really liked them. I used them in their hitting bays and they felt so darn good. I wondered how the black finish would hold up. I hope they are made without the black finish. I am sure they are. Now I play with hybrids instead of irons but I have to admit these Ping G 710 Irons felt superb when I was using them. They inspired confidence, looked and felt terrific. Great review again Mr Shiels !!!!
Great vid Rick! I have a challenge for you. A good test of strategy and technique. 9 holes. You can choose to play with as many clubs as you like. But, on each hole, you must play each club sequencially, until you reach the green. For example, if you choose Driver, 5 iron, 7 iron, 8 iron, PW, LB that is the order you hit on the hole. The target is to break Par.
Rick - I ordered a set of these months ago; 5 - SW. I finally got them and used them this past weekend. These are really great irons. I've hit greens that I've never hit before. So the finish wears off - gives it some "character" as long as its even wear. To address your concerns; I bought a black Ping Glide 60 deg for abrasive sand shots. I wish I bought Glide 50 deg SW and went 4 - PW instead. I may just get a 4 iron anyway. They are that good and easy to hit. I'm a high handicapper but even low handicappers I play with admire these. I've been using iron covers for the time being. Thank you!
Thanks Rick. I was on cusp of going with a set of G710 but your "wear and tear" segment was VERY telling. I am GRATEFUL for the insight. Thumbs up as usual.

Jaden Whetzel yeah the I500 is an incredibly sexy iron. Looks like a blade. But the dispersion was better with the g710 with me but I was very tempted by the i500. The fitter recommended the i500 as I’m a 9 handicap & you can work it as there is minimal offset. But with these G710 I was hitting every green & launching my 7 iron 175 yards which is unreal for me. I reckon ping will bring out a i510. Black. That would look immense. Can’t beat ping. For me they make the best equipment 100%

I've been playing for over 20 years and no matter what I do I can't hit a driver so I just learned to drive a 2 iron and go out and have fun with my irons. Most weekends I can score better than most guys with the newest and greatest drivers in their bags. Who care really, I just want to have fun and enjoy the game. Love your videos and reviews.
I’ve just purchased these irons and have found out that the faces are actually chrome and the rest are the normal material that marks. Hope this helps :)

I love Ping clubs. I have owned only two sets of clubs. The first were a set of used Ping I2 the second were a brand new set of G15. Love the sound, feel and how they play! Cheers
The ball stopped quickly because the greens are “Winter Soft”😉😉🤣🤣 The firmer greens at this time of years are the Links courses. I was amazed recently how firm West Lancs greens were compared to inland courses I’ve been on recently..
Those are some gorgeous clubs. I'd love to put them up on my wall. As long as I didn't have to use them, any damage at all to that finish would make me cry.
@@mattsmith-bl2bg Uh, that sort of message to complete strangers isn't particularly helpful. For the record it will never go well, much less to an entirely unrelated comment on a website not designed around that type of thing and to a message completely unrelated to anything remotely to do with that type of behaviour. My genuine advice would be to get to know someone a little better, find out if they're interested in that sort of thing, and perhaps something a little less awkward and direct might work out better for you. The main point of that being directing it towards people you know well enough to find out if they would be interested.
I've been playing irons only for a while until I can get lessons to fix my driver swing. I use Ping irons as well. My set is 45 years old and not exactly forgiving, BUT I can outplaying all my friends with a 2-PW set of Karsten 2 irons is so much fun.

Rick I just love your blogs on TH-cam, but what makes my thoughts wonder - what do you do with all these clubs/balls you either purchase or are given to you free of charge, surely you do not stock them all in your garage! OH - sand will rub down most surfaces no matter what colour they are! You are very popular on You Tube Rick - and with that being said -it would be a nice gesture to give what you do not want to your followers like a raffle, or to those who your team think would help their game! I have tried only using irons and I can vouch for anyone to try it as I hut every fairway for once lol! Thanks Rick for your blogs, so so helpful!
Rick!!! 🙋♂️💲💲 We want to be able to purchase your merchandise. Time to open a store. I love the putter and driver head covers. Maybe t-shirts and 1/4 zip pullover??
Ha, my irons get bunged up hitting from grass/rough and clanking in my bag as I roll along on a push cart (or carry when I was younger)! Love the evals and trial videos! Thanks, Rick,
Took my woods out of the bag 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did for my game. For a guy that only gets out 2-5xs a year I can shoot low 90’s, down from 105-110ish on a 72
I’ve always loved and played Ping but since the G400 irons they’ve had issues with durability. If I’m paying £1500 for these clubs, I’d expect the finish to be Dimondnized Black Metal (DMB) not the cheaper PVD. Cobra black forged irons have a DBM surface and cost about £600 less.
Great video this. I recently played my first round of golf in 18 months and decided not to take my driver and 3 wood with me, using only hybrids and irons. It was a really interesting test and I ended up shooting 86 which I was pretty pleased with. It certainly makes you think a lot more about the course you're playing and how to negotiate holes. Especially into strong winds when you don't have a driver in your bag!
I use alot of irons. I like it more. Let's say I average around 280 with my 2 iron and I can hit 300 with my best drive. We'll both will be fine on any par 4 or par 5. Just the irons are more accurate and versatile. Where the driver will be much more unforgiving and prone to accuracy issues for me. Idk why but my best iron shots will have more distance and accuracy than any drive. So drivers aren't really justified for me. Just flop a long iron like a 2 or 3 and repeat. Then you're putting for the chance of eagle or birdie.
Can you please comment on the sound of these clubs Rick? I currently have the G700 irons and I love everything about them except the sound. According the the description on the Ping website they’ve improved the sound in the G710’s, but would love to hear your opinion.
I own it. It’s actually pretty fun to hit! Only gamed it a couple of times though. Not a real “everyday” need for it in the bag. Good for messing around doing trick shots in the backyard.
@@polaroidwhite9037 fuck... hahahahahah! That's fuckin' hilarious! Love that story.. True or not, it gave me a great laugh! I actually can see that, too... I was practicing at the range last Summer, was practicing flops.... Hit one, went straight up about 50 to 75 feet, dropped straight back down... and I caught it! LOL So I could totally see how hitting yourself is very plausible.. Probably my favorite thing on YT is Golf Fails..
I play a 64 from time to time... and can basically open it to a 72 ... I love my 64... I can pull off 4 different shots... and can play it 60yds in very easily nothing further out...... I play 50,56,64.... sometime replace 64 butter knife with 60 and 62 depending on time of year and if I travel to play..with more bounce needed... but 72...wow
Just thinking that when you were talking about chipping around the green, club head speed and weight of the ball will not make the face flex one bit.... 3 shots and you will gauge the reaction of the ball, the leading edge is such that you will have a more accurate/smoother turf interaction at slow speeds than a vokey for example
Wish I would've seen your review on these before I bought my set. Specifically in reference to the black irons showing wear much quicker. I just spent $ 1000.00 USD on a 6-AW set of Callaway Big Bertha Black irons, and after one week of playing they look as worn as the set I've had for the last 12 years. Especially my 7i and 9i as I use those most often. Great review, and great performance on the field. Big fan here!
Always amazes me looking at the lofts. All the irons are 1 club stronger loft wise. Then they even had to lower the loft on the PW to cover the gap between that and the 9i which has an 8i loft. Barring that the clubs look gorgeous and preform nicely. I think though depending on the price drop this would be much better set dropping off the SW and UW. Everyone seems to have their own tastes in wedges and more people are getting fit for exactly what they need/want.
Great vid and review as always Shielsy! Almost to 3/4 of a million subs brother, can’t wait to see a million!! Your content and quality of vids are the best.
Who decided oversized game improvement irons are ugly? All the hacks that think they can play blades, and wait for the green to claer from 280, that's who....
I love my Ping G irons, 3 years old and played on average once a fortnight. Still look great. I can't imagine what a black set would look like after that time...well, I can, not great. :)
Just dont understand why we cant have a black club that will last as long as a chrome finish... chrome does scratch but over a while... we live in 2020 and have black clubs that scratch after 10 hits... that's pitiful.
I’ve tried this but had a hybrid .....I’ve played 4 Hybrid/Irons down... and My iron game became stronger... especially longer irons... I use to fear hitting 5,4, irons... now I give myself 7/10 chance of succeeding on my long iron shots which is good for me.. also making my shorter iron game solid enough to know that I’ll hit the green...
What's your handicap target for 2020?

I've been playing for over 20 years and no matter what I do I can't hit a driver so I just learned to drive a 2 iron and go out and have fun with my irons. Most weekends I can score better than most guys with the newest and greatest drivers in their bags. Who care really, I just want to have fun and enjoy the game. Love your videos and reviews.
I to like the looks of these clubs, but would worry about them marking up . Great review thanks for your efforts.
I’ve just purchased these irons and have found out that the faces are actually chrome and the rest are the normal material that marks. Hope this helps :)
The scuffs eventually turn into a beautiful ombre look. A more brushed look. Awesome irons.
I’m Going thru so much Right my mom and dad got divorced and plus my mom is really sick in the hospital and I been very stressed out and like these video been actually been helping me so much I love Golf And I love watching your videos keep up the Great work
I’m always baffled on how well I do when my coach makes me do this
when you see me shank a driver across two fairways you'll totally understand why this is better for me 😂😂
@@natskis not to brag but I get 4 shanks 😎
I love Ping clubs. I have owned only two sets of clubs. The first were a set of used Ping I2 the second were a brand new set of G15. Love the sound, feel and how they play!
Cheers
The ball stopped quickly because the greens are “Winter Soft”😉😉🤣🤣
The firmer greens at this time of years are the Links courses. I was amazed recently how firm West Lancs greens were compared to inland courses I’ve been on recently..
Loved the editing where you hit just as the best dropped @ 9:00 lovely touch
Those are some gorgeous clubs. I'd love to put them up on my wall. As long as I didn't have to use them, any damage at all to that finish would make me cry.
@@mattsmith-bl2bg omg mate, THIIIIIRRRRSSSSTTTYYYYY!!!!!

No driver reminds me of “The way of the playa”...Waddaplaya waddabaus.

Love the honesty in your club reviews, you really cover all the bases that some people may not consider when shopping for new clubs. Keep the great vids coming!
I don't even play golf and I watch your videos Rick... 😂
Might just lift a set of clubs... 😉
I haven’t played golf in 15 years but watching you play makes me want to get back into it!
I'm therteen years old an I'm from Sweden. My handicap goal is 5 in 2020
I mean come on who does not love Rick Shiels golf he educates me a lot about golf and that's why im starting to play it.
Our golf coach got them a week ago 😂 and he already has the sims
I don't know why they don't just do irons like this in black oxide. I love the dark rusty look.
Thanks for being honest throughout, especially by doing a wear test. Thumbs up from me.
Rick!!! 🙋♂️💲💲 We want to be able to purchase your merchandise. Time to open a store. I love the putter and driver head covers. Maybe t-shirts and 1/4 zip pullover??
I agree with playing with a half set. I make you learn how to hit different shots instead of just blasting full clubs all of the time. Great video.
I love wear and tear look. Gives them character.
DA Claggett Not after only 10 shots after I’ve spent £1500 to buy them. I buy thrift store clubs for character.
Ha, my irons get bunged up hitting from grass/rough and clanking in my bag as I roll along on a push cart (or carry when I was younger)! Love the evals and trial videos! Thanks, Rick,
I did chuckle at WUS as in wuss spelt out by the clubs haha

Took my woods out of the bag 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did for my game.
For a guy that only gets out 2-5xs a year I can shoot low 90’s, down from 105-110ish on a 72
I’ve always loved and played Ping but since the G400 irons they’ve had issues with durability.
If I’m paying £1500 for these clubs, I’d expect the finish to be Dimondnized Black Metal (DMB) not the cheaper PVD. Cobra black forged irons have a DBM surface and cost about £600 less.
DBM is hard as rocks and feels like shit
I got fitted for the G700s a few months ago and they’ve been phenomenal
Nice irons
A 2 iron would have given you a more representative score. Although you seemed to be smoothing your way round anyways.
In a sense the 4 iron was almost a 2 iron with the strong loft.
TheGreatScot 45 true my 2 is 18 degrees
Yea i bought the callaway pro steelheads black in colour and they have scuffed up a bit after about 18 months but still love the look of them
Black is the new chrome after 5 rounds 😂
Roger Fleming oil can better for that reason
They're going to look wrecked after a month or so clattering around in the bag as well.
These look like the G crossover from 2015, that club for me was a monster off the tee so no bad thing ")
Can you please comment on the sound of these clubs Rick? I currently have the G700 irons and I love everything about them except the sound. According the the description on the Ping website they’ve improved the sound in the G710’s, but would love to hear your opinion.
So I found out there’s a 72 degree wedge made by a company called bombtech. Imagine hitting that thing.
I own it. It’s actually pretty fun to hit! Only gamed it a couple of times though. Not a real “everyday” need for it in the bag. Good for messing around doing trick shots in the backyard.
I hit myself in the face with that wedge...true story
I play 50,56,64.... sometime replace 64 butter knife with 60 and 62 depending on time of year and if I travel to play..with more bounce needed... but 72...wow
jguitar29 no one asked
Just thinking that when you were talking about chipping around the green, club head speed and weight of the ball will not make the face flex one bit.... 3 shots and you will gauge the reaction of the ball, the leading edge is such that you will have a more accurate/smoother turf interaction at slow speeds than a vokey for example
Did anyone notice that he lined up his wedges to spell WUS
Wish I would've seen your review on these before I bought my set. Specifically in reference to the black irons showing wear much quicker. I just spent $ 1000.00 USD on a 6-AW set of Callaway Big Bertha Black irons, and after one week of playing they look as worn as the set I've had for the last 12 years. Especially my 7i and 9i as I use those most often.
Great review, and great performance on the field. Big fan here!
I play every round without Driver, only irons keeps the ball loss down to a minimum for me!
I absolutely love those irons. Black out, forgiveness, and long. Unfortunately I’d never be able to buy them.
Rick love your videos
4 iron off the tee all day, everyday... best thing i did for my game is leaving the driver at home!
I’m still using Ping G10’s 😂
Great vid and review as always Shielsy! Almost to 3/4 of a million subs brother, can’t wait to see a million!! Your content and quality of vids are the best.
personally I don't care what they look like ....its about performance
Awesome videos and podcasts. If any of you haven’t listened to the podcasts yet I highly recommend it.
Thanks Zachary! Recorded a new one today that goes live on Monday. It’s a really funny one. Ha
Rick Shiels Golf right on! I will definitely give it a listen when it comes out. Keep up the great content.
7 iron has less loft than a traditional 6 iron crazy!
Ricks videos are timeless and awesome.
Who decided oversized game improvement irons are ugly? All the hacks that think they can play blades, and wait for the green to claer from 280, that's who....
Yep, pick the irons that work best for you and learn to love the way they look.
