I'm in Canada, but unfortunately, the coupon code won't work (reads as "Invalid"). It'll be the same for anyone else outside the US who chooses their country on their 'International Coverage' countries list to register (i.e. Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Singapore, United Kingdom (UK)). Great service either way though.
Why do these people never hack into student loan companies? It's never to actually HELP people, just harm. We need these hackers to be more like Robin Hood than King John
I can actually answer this in a meaningful way…
Because “hacking” is a sort of hobby that grows into an industry, and its run by bounty systems - because some companies and irresponsible gov’t agencies kept giving jobs and financial rewards to hackers it became a system where people expect after they hack you to be cherished and rewarded.
We should never have rewarded criminals who had no intention of helping with rewards or overly generous plea bargains - we morally rotted that idea out.
Entitlement - in short.
Is having your personal data stolen from student loans better? But i hear what you're saying.
I've thought about this very same question so many times too, whenever there's a news story about hacking. You'd think it would be something to help struggling poor people (or people already-ripped-off, losing everything and getting no restitution from unscrupulous companies), but nope.
@@TiredOfWhineyBajans I suspect the people behind these hacking are not people who care about the little guy's wellbeing. They care about stealing money.
Unfortunately it's not as simple as taking back your degree to the college office to try to tell them that your degree didn't work out and you want them to call off the debt.
So then what happens when "Delete Me" gets hacked?
Cyber Security is not just a career you can just dive into. Its an acquired taste, if you have no interest in the field, you'll be burnt out easily, and it requires years of experience to even get into it at entry level. This is a major issue with individuals who invest their time in perusing this career. They go to school, grab a degree and realize that you have to acquire the skillset through multiple jobs of different Information Technology specialties, and felt like they were lied to.
While there is a shortage of qualified candidates, its more than that. companies just not caring because its expensive, or that its a lengthy and complicated process, or the company not understanding how cyber security works.
That and most places don't want to pay for this in the first place.
This is true, and most people don't realize it. I have a master's degree and Sec+ but can't hardly get an interview. The demand isn't because there aren't enough people with degrees. The demand is high because no one qualifies, and companies refuse to take a chance training anyone.
@@timah9420 Agreed. I'm sorry thats your situation, I've been in hiring purgatory before and it sucks. The market is all kinds of weird right now. But I wanted to post this because I'm tired of seeing so many people go through the suffering of that. It just needs to be said. Everyone advertises Security as another field to just jump into, make 140k, WFH when it is not. As a consulting security Architect, this career needs fundamental experience from IT jobs.
Wish the best, and hope your luck changes.
If was an ill-informed comment.
not to mention working off hours/overnight/holidays. Threat actors don't take breaks, you can't either. That was enough to push me more into the sysadmin/cloud admin side of IT.
(I still work off hours sometimes, but my main schedule is 9 to 5 thank god)
No database should contain all that information in the first place to BE stolen
That's all you need to fake tens of millions of people's identities to take money (loans), empty bank accounts etc
The idea that it's only worth a couple million is silly, there's probably a single record worth the amount they're asking, even if it took a bit of fishing to figure out which one
nothing on the internet is secure, if someone wants do take something they will, all you can do is to make it hard, but wont be ever impossible
So over this future. I work in IT and it’s inevitable that a company will be hacked. I’ve worked for some decently sized companies that had the money to invest in security but it didn’t matter. I’ve personally seen 3 attacks in 5 years and each time we as employees are more screwed than before. My personal information has been leaked now 3 times because of the inadequate management not taking the concern more seriously. I’ve had several problems with phishing scams and people opening accounts in my name. Too many companies have too much information on us all.
that's because the guy/gal in charge has an MBA and not a tech degree so they don't know what to do. That was the problem with the Equifax data breach. MBA are good for cutting costs, but not for tech stuff. They're not who you should have staffing the IT department.
Excellent quasi-stealth ad. I'll tune out the typical ad read so I appreciate it when the channel does something different that gives me a reason to watch. 👍
I lost my house because of a flawed background check. My background came back that I had lied on my application. It didn't say what exactly.... just that my references didn't match. Mind you I don't even have a speeding ticket on my criminal check. To this day I have no idea why I wasn't hired....
The Hackers are 20 steps ahead of any cyber security we have as of today. That's the major problem. Great content 👍
Cyber security is shockingly lacking in most companies.
@ALifeAfterLayoff because cybersecurity is usually seen as an expense, an overhead cost. Just trying to get into cybersecurity is expensive because you do require experience (from I.T. usually) and certifications (certifications are made by companies, they are not government-based, it's basically a popularity contest, and we have many many *certs* for one specific concentration of computer technology).
Also you could have two companies that basically do the exact same thing and they'll both have different technological requirements to work for those companies. We also have so many different Technologies available to do a task or to solve a problem that it's honestly paralyzing.
There's more to it than that and this is kind of a gross oversimplification to answer your statement.
Edit: Grammar and some corrections in sentences that I mistyped.
What better way to harvest people’s personal data than instilling fear and creating a service that says “just give us all your personal data and we’ll protect you.” Sounds like a catch 22.
It’s ridiculous that I have to opt out and they don’t have to ask me to opt in…
It's like some bizarre parody of a bureaucratic dystopia.
Your life can be ruined because you failed to keep control of a number.
In order to get even a job, you must give this number to people who will sell it.
You can, rarely, opt out of having someone keep the number once they have it, but you will not be informed that they have it.
Right...exactly. This company never asked me if I wanted to opt out.
They DO NOT have your data at a UPS store. They have a mailing address at a UPS store where they receive mail. The records are presumably somewhere in the cloud....
Yup, their corporate headquarters uses a UPS store as their mailing address - think about that when you realize they also hold billions of employment records.
It's a mailbox (#236) in UPS. Remembered there were stores "Mailboxes Etc"? UPS both that business 20 yrs ago
And they are allowed to farm out our US DATA SECURITY to foreign countries!!
It's OK, people should be more honest and transparent. We should all live as one large village where everyone knows everything. This way we can see the truth and start building a better society. Expose the shadowy parasites who don't contribute but suck blood out of others. And if someone has a problem people should know that too, maybe they'll help him.
Hey Brian, could you make a video about typical second and potentially final 'in-person' interview questions as well? We have been talking mainly about telephone and first interview scenarios but are there any particularities we should watch out on the second (last) in person interviews? Where companies might still trick us? Let take an average position, not those super google-type IT roles where are 5 stages, 2 tests, etc...
Everyone laid off the security teams, lol. I am not happy because I am sure they have my info however if it bankrupts one of these background check companies I am all for it.
A lot of need for cyber security but no one is paying for it!!! They just write letters, and oh well!!!
To add to this, not including the whole issue around the Tech Layoff and before that.
You need experience (starting with I.T. experience and other requirements, e.g., certs) AND certs (in this context, cybersecurity focused), this is an expensive endeavor (the certs that exists are made by companies, they are not government-based), and gain experience is actually more difficult (the whole "need experience to get experience") than it seems (moreso depending on where you live, if you live in a city for example like Miami [or similar] you NEED to be bilingual [Spanish for Miami, and in slang or Cuban style]). The whole information technology and related industries are so vastly complex as far as all the hard skills you need to know even if it's for a job between two different companies that basically do the exact same thing. You're also expected to have pretty good soft skills, especially if you need to go to a job interview, and part of your duties requires you to have a pretty decent customer service speaking level skill. Computer Tech is a very difficult "hard skill(s)" to learn, adding the need for great "soft skills" is challenging.
Suffice to say, the information technology and the cybersecurity and any other related industry field are complicated; expensive; and a mess for the employee, employer, and the job market. For the employee or prospective employee, it's a low, if not negative, ROI to get in the field. This field can be location dependent, and at the moment, it provides low pay, especially when you need training for certs and the certs themselves; mostly because companies always low ball you and those involved with Tech usually have poor soft skills aka people skills. Tech is very complicated to know. Hard skills and soft skills have an inverse relationship.
With Tech being as complicated as it is, for companies and the wealthy, mostly, the growth in automation and AI is a godsend. If done correctly and we had a good job market especially more focused for home, that would be less need to know Nitty Gritty hard skills and we could have Improvement to our technological infrastructure and assuming this was an ideal world a better economy. But we don't live in an ideal world, and the people who own and can wield with now fewer groups of people, can use these computer technologies to make it ever harder for those not in the top 10% or a few more to have a better economy for the working class people.
The address is just for shipping, just like a post office box
My current employer, I had to go to a UPS store to verify my ID as it was a work from home position. They scanned my driver’s license and SS card. The verification company had a representative in the UPS store and that person sent the information back to the main location.
a crappy, intrusive Florida company with shit-tier amateur-hour security. i'm shocked. _shocked._
They probably used the UPS store address to register their company
Take my identity, I don't need it anymore, thank you very much
Ha!
Good Lord...May those affected by this be OK and those responsible brought to justice
I've had my credit "locked down" for over 5 years now. Sure, it makes it more challenging and a little bit more time-consuming to fill out a loan application. Big deal...
Background check firms is something that already surprises me from the jump. Especially in the USA, the home of the brave, land of the free. Having a portion of your economy dedicated to spying on your workers is contrary to both these principles. This type of activity is straight up illegal in Europe by the way (check what the GDPR law is).
You are wrong.
@@Krlowanigu-mg6eg About what?
Well that's a shame. Nowhere in "land of the free" (which is from a SONG, btw, not any legal document!) is it included that I should be susceptible to hiring convicted pedophiles at my daycare center. 🤦♀️
UPS lets you use their store address as a mailing address for mail instead of a PO box.
Sadly when there's issues that come up at your current employment it can trigger an emotional response to panic apply to multiple jobs on the internet and almost never crossing your mind that your info can be leaked on the dark web. Thus, you shouldn't get emotional about job searching.
I have had to go to a UPS store in the past for fingerprinting in connection with a background check. The company I was working for was a large, well-known corporation also.
What is the background firm?!
If only there was a large body of people with vast amount of resources elected by people to advocate for and protect consumers. Individuals do not have the time or means to play personal data security whack-a-mole. 😢
If they did an employment check in 2018 (like they did for me), they should not still have it in 2024. Delete it! The missing piece is the company makes money by selling the data. Can't they delete the SSN at at least? I guess not. Too much money involved. "We give client data security the highest priority...but you can do a credit freeze." How re-assuring. They have a PO Box in a UPS Store, and use the store address as their own physical address, so yes, that is shady. If they sell data, I'm not sure how they make sure the buyer is "legit"--what ever that means in this arena. Maybe there was not hack, and they sold the data. The hack is a cover story. Remember how shady this company is.
It's a virtual mailbox. The UPS store offers po boxes
I’m aware. Just don’t feel comfortable with the amount of info they hold with a virtual mailbox being the main location.
I am appalled how lacking was security in my university, government branches and major corporations... I get that it costs money, but you all literally have a degree on cybersecurity, how can you go around slacking on it as an university lol.
I wonder if this happened to me because I had two jobs that said I was hired then just dropped me they never told me why. They just ignored my calls or pretended they were still doing the background check over a month later. I have never had anything on my background check more than a speeding ticket and that’s been over 15 years ago.
Too little, too late. The deed's already done, if you weren't scrubbed before they made the pull, it's way too late now. Besides ... who's to say these people won't get hacked too, and all that sensitive data will be packaged all nicely for them. Hackers only need to get lucky once, the security team has to be perfect every time.
But let's all centralize our health data for government purposes, and don't worry, it will be kept safe.
This was bound to happen, companies are doing more extensive background check than ever it is a wealth of information and prime targets.
UPS Stores rent mailboxes. They just rent a mailbox there using the UPS store street address and the suite number is their box number. This is very common.
This has been going on for a long time. The truth is it's not the company's fault it's the governments fault for not protecting its citizens against people who have ill will.
If you don't own your own data then you are not free. If you are a perfect law-abiding citizen it doesn't matter you should own your own data
At this point I think the hackers have all my information A-Z on file
The ups store is there mailing address. The have boxes there where you can get your mail like the PO.
_“STOLEN”_
Their address is the UPS Store (paid mailbox!)
Everyone freeze your credit now!!!!!!
Is this whole thing just an add 🤣
Ah, Florida... why can the headlines never be something positive and uplifting, just once.... 😮💨
The UPS store = somehow not sued senseless for trying to impersonate United Parcel Service aka UPS!
Is this whole video an ad?
This whole business of allowing the moral hazard of companies to collate and keep the personal information for legitimate business needs beyond the exact need is a menace
cyber is ultra hot right now
13 minute ad is crazy.
Contact your representatives. Demand a central bank digital currency. Nothing could go wrong, right?
IRS also got hacked.
Why are you not naming the company?
What do you mean? Which company?
@@ALifeAfterLayoff "The Shady Company."
@@Ark-Angel44
It's clearly mentioned in the video.
Thank you.

You’re so handsome
