Specific to 1977 to 1985, 4 and 5-cylinder engines. Understand theory - then do systematic tests. Link to more info: mercedessource... Link tp part 2 • Diesel Won't Shut Off ...
My 240d once got stuck at full throttle and wouldn't shut off. That was a scary adventure ! I finally got it stopped by standing on the brake pedal with both feet and turned onto a side street where I was able to stall the engine on a steep incline. Lucky for me, an older gentleman that lived on that street had several old Mercedes and knew exactly what the problem was and helped me get going again.
My friends loved to give me a hard time for having to open the hood to shut my car off for two weeks while I was waiting for the diafram part to come in

great video, and the theory of operations and steps of diagnostics. Almost all cars before 1990s used vacuum extensively where the vacuum diagrams got crazy big. Thanks Ken for making these great videos. (posting on family account)
My car wasn't shutting off, and even the "Stop" lever wouldn't stop it. I used a smoke machine on the vacuum line, and found two leaks. The small leak was going into the firewall, but the big leak was in the main line. One of the inline filters (I assume they are filters) had a crack in the side. I took that out and clamped a piece of tubing on the line. No more problem with the shut-off. As a bonus, the A/C started working again as well. Just in time for Autumn.
Because they are designed to run forever. All the time. Shut off option politely included to help non diesel owners not feel so bad. Seriously, is a great feeling my engine so strong I have to shut off by hand under hood when it dieseled.🥰 Ok, listening to your explanation now..... Edit: my answer to your question is heart. They never say die. Ok, can't wait to hear actual answer as well.😊
Fantastic , thanks so much , de-mystiying that issue , simple explanation, enthusiastically delivered , this with so many of your videos have helped me with my old mercedes, thanks again for all you do, a big hello from grey raining great britain
I'm going with a popular answer, the door lock system is leaking. Why yes, I do have a golf tee in my door lock vacuum line. Why do you ask? Thanks for the information you give us!
You have a leak in the central locking circuit. You've disconnected this system from vacuum supply and sealed the system with a golf tee, restoring sufficient vacuum supply to operate the shut off solenoid. Next you'll need to troubleshoot the central locking system... I really like using a smoke machine :)
kent did a video where he said that if a car comes in to the shop with problems of dash warning lights coming on then if the cars battery was more than 3 or 4 years old they would automaticly change the battery. can anybody tell me what number video that was
Mr. Kent is a walking encyclopedia and legend
The good old Mercedes were so reliable that it doesn’t want quite running even when u turn off 😂, unlike the recent models that breakdown more often

Love all your videos - just amazing ❤ Best regards from Denmark 🇩🇰
Thanks for the video Kent. My guess is a leaking o-ring between the master cylinder and brake booster.

Maybe I made it a little too obvious. LOL
@@Mercedessource nope, I'm just happy I got one of your challenges right!
Yay!
Thanks Kent!!!
Thank you for the clue

I guess there is a leak on the yellow lines going into the interior.
Leaking power locks? plugged circuit with the golf tee?
Door lock system
Dittos!😊
Faulty 2 way valve at firewall?
Maybe the nut on the booster was loose
Clue is a vacuum leak lol
...it's a former german taxi 😆
No chance with a 5-cylinder under the hood
