Hoka Challenger 7 Multi-Tester Review: The best road-to-trail shoe?

  • The Hoka Challenger 7 is built to be versatile, both in the terrain it can tackle and the types of runs it can handle. It's lightweight but cushioned, and has an outsole that's smooth on the road but grips well on light trails.
Run Testers Kieran and Nick have been testing out the Hoka Challenger 7 over the past month or so. Here’s their verdict on the shoe.

I have the Challenger 5 and it does exactly what it’s advertised to do. I have some tarmac between my house and the nearest trails and running that in hardcore trail shoes is no fun but the Challenger bridges that gap. It’s not going to be the shoe for more extreme off-road but it doesn’t claim to be. I don’t have narrow feet but have no issues with the width (although I must confess I’ve never ran more than around 10k at a time in them). Good to hear that Hoka haven’t messed around with a perfectly good shoe.

Can't wait for the new Stinson 7's. They have always been my favorite Hoka ultra-stock trail shoes.

Great video. Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra is my road to trail shoe, although I’m happy with the Torrent 2s at this time of year when I know the trails are likely to be muddier.

After just 2 runs in the Challenger 7 the exposed eva foam part of the outsole (middle of outsole) shows early signs of fraying / early deterioration (the Rincon 3 being fully exposed eva deteriorated very soon for me previously so I was conscious it would happen again) so having switched to other brands and then returned to Hoka in the hope they had strengthened this, it doesn't seem to be the case. I found them comfortable from the get go but now thinking the Speedgoat is not going to suffer this problem (for me at least). Thanks for the great reviews, so helpful to suggest alternatives etc.

Thanks for the review Run Testers. I'm coming to the end (700km) of my Challenger 6 which has been ideal for my situation of 1km of road running to get to my trail circuit (and back). While the Speedgoat is better on the actual trails, I've found the Challenger to be better on the tarmac. I'll be using the Nike Peg Trail 4 next (based on your earlier review), so will probably pick up the Challenger 7 when on sale next year.

Hi how did you get on with the Nikes? I've just been doing some long runs and I feel they're unstable compared to the SGoats as my ankles are so sore after the runs if I go on more uneven surfaces. Do you find that?

    • @George-lz6ue
      @George-lz6ue ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ourchannelofthisandthat Hi, I've been a bit slow with using the Nikes, which are still in their box, as I went with the NB FFX More trail v2 first. I'll get a couple more hundred Kms out of the NBs, then try the Nikes. My long runs are 20 to 25kms so I may not run into ankle problems. I hope you resolve your running issues.

My favorite shoe for hiking. Cuz I'm fat and have bad ballance and this shoe keeps my low to the ground cuz cushion layers aren't too high . And this shoe gives me good support on the sides. For long hikes I would choose a hoka with more cussion. but for the short hikes i do, that are steep and rocky and sandy and slippery, i feel safe in these. i have the challenger six. i get the 7 in a few days. looks like they gave it a bit more cushion or easy roll/rocker. so that's gonna be even better. also cool colorways. thanks for the in depth review. hopefully you'll talk slower going forward in your life.

My trail shoe has always been the Torrent, but this winter, I'll be wearing the Challenger goretex version because I have to run in the rain and snow. For winter road runs, I'll be wearing the goretex version of the Clifton 9. I'd rather wear these than run on a treadmill.

I'm quite new to Hoka, how do these fit compared to the Mach 6 and Clifton 9 ?
    Thanks in advance

Works good on the road and pretty good on the trail but not as grippy on wet/ muddy surfaces. I did not actually slip but felt I might. Otherwise good grip on dry surfaces.

Good ‘holiday’ shoe - family holiday going to get out for 1-1 1/2 hours in a morning on a mix of road light trail (not really knowing the area) and only have space for 1 pair of shoes in the suitcase

The chap with the cap on backwards always seems to complain about the snugness of running shoes. Makes me wonder if he has the right size on most of the time! Anyway, considering these for running backlanes of Somerset with a few fields and woodland paths thrown in occasionally! There seems to be enough plushness to offer protection in bad, wet weather.

Great video! I’m looking for shoes more for technical mountain use. Any thoughts? I’m a Saucony man generally for regular runs but happy to look at other brands. All suggestions welcome.

Interesting, I find the speedgoat substantially pointier and narrower in the forefoot. These feel better on my foot.

The Challenger 5 is the only shoe that’s given me a guaranteed blister on the side of my big toe on long runs, the toe box is too narrow for me. Doesn’t sound like this will be different. I did otherwise like the shoe though.

My vote goes to Saucony ride 15TR! Much better foam and grip than the Hoka. Build quality of Saucony far exceeds Hoka IMO.
