    How cool is it that we have a TV show documenting the rise of computers AS IT HAPPENED? From the time when it was largely mainframes and hobby systems, to the time when computers were ubiquitous in the home, and networked together. All of this in real time -- not in retrospect -- where you can see trends come and go, get a feel for the mindset at the time, and see the beginnings of things you now know ended up being big, or failing completely.
    I watched the show on-and-off at the time, and now I'm thankful this TH-cam channel is preserving the entire thing!

      Dbase 3 was super popular, then it just went away. Lotus 1-2-3 is another popular program I remember, and then again you just never heard of it later down the road. Whatever happened to programs like Dbase and Lotus 1-2-3? Were they abandoned for more popular software?

      You've heard of a small company called Microsoft? They have nifty programs like Access, and Excel! 😁

    • @TwiigssGames
      @TwiigssGames 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@midnitetoker420 I never really used Dbase 3 or Lotus 1-2-3, I only remember the names of those popular programs. They were popular when I was a kid, so that's how I know of them.
      I wasn't aware Access and Excel were the replacements however. Wordperfect is still around today actually, and that program was widely used back in the day.

      @@TwiigssGames Lotus made strategic mistakes it could never recover from. Their DOS based program was industry standard and had an essential captive market. The problem was the transition to Windows based systems, it decided to hedge its bets that people/companies would still use DOS and so did not heavily invest in the program adaptation to Windows. Their port to Windows was junk and did not leverage the windowing environment since the original DOS program was rooted to command keys and not a mouse structure. When corporate customers moved to Windows platforms the DOS product became irrelevant. And guess who the competition was - Excel (Office). Nothing much more needs to be said from here, other than point out Lotus 1-2-3 went from like a 90% marketshare to practically zero in just a few years. Totally unreal and a classic business case study today.

    Does anyone know when the use of Bayes-based filtering methods against junk mail started? They were not mentioned in this episode, only rudimentary approaches, such as defining rules based on sender address or occurrences of certain word patterns in the subject or text body.

    The best way to kill spam is to filter it before it even gets to your email server. I get zero spam because that's how my email service is setup.

    • @diegolara4202
      @diegolara4202 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Howie Isaacks What service are you using to block spam? I have tried to find a spam filtering service that isn't focused just for business users but also to regular home users. And I don't want spam software I was something that will block spam on the cloud before it gets to the server.

    • @HowieIsaacks
      @HowieIsaacks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Diego Lara For myself, and the customers that I host, I use a server product called Spam Titan. It filters all incoming messages before they get to the email server. It then blocks or quarantines the spam emails, and allows through the "clean" emails. If you're using a free service like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail, you're stuck with what they provide to you. If you own your own domain name, and you are paying to have your email hosted by someone, you can use services like Spam Soap. If you do own your own domain name, I suggest that you check out a company called GetSync'd at getsyncd.com. I work with them to host my own email as well as host email for my customers. They're awesome.
