Might there be solvants to help loosen the glue ? The solvents can be unpleasant stuff, i know . You'd soak the boots first for a week or two and maybe air them several days before dismantling em .
Co2 is a good solvent in liquid phase . Easy to remember that you can have it liquid at -20 c° and 20 bar pressure . A bar is almost one atmosphere ( 14•7psi) . Of course the co2 source is your readily available dry ice. - from memory 28 bar is required at -10 ° C and 15 bar at -30° . Needs a suitable pressure vessel , I've said enough .

After watching this, I can't imagine anyone begrudging Nicks for the price of their boots. That boot is an impressive bit of construction!
I used to be the guy who bought his tennis shoes out of the discount rack, I couldn't understand paying all that money for a pair of shoes.
Then I bought a pair of Redwing truhicker safety toe boots for commercial driving since I would be in and out of warehouses.
even though those are considered cheap boots, they are still better then any other tennis shoe I have ever worn, and they have lasted longer. I know understand that to get good foot wear, you just have to pay for them. I hope to buy a even better pair when I wear these out (the soles are not replaceable, they are also made in china IIRC) I bought these in 2016 and looking at them, I think I have a couple more years in them, I don't think I have ever had a pair of Nike or the like last me more then half a year.

You can order these with steel or composit toe protection and fire resistant soles and stitching. Those would be enough to meet the requirements where needed.
I have a pair of the steel toe contenders. I LOVE these boots. As my first lair of Nick's boots. I'm hooked. Can't wait to order a 2nd pair. And even one of their casual/dress boots.
I had a pair of these when I worked at a papermill. The owners bought everyone a pair for x-mas ( you had to be there for at least 10 years to get them) they lasted for about 3 yrs. I loved them so much! The most comfortable work boot ever! Mine finally started falling apart due to all the chemicals that I had to stand in. A pair of Dr.Martins steel toe boots usually lasted about 7 months if you where lucky, so that oughta give you an idea on how tough these boots are.
Well hopefully you didnt just toss them because these boots are resoleable and rebuildable. You could have sent then your boots and basically had a brand new pair for about 200 bucks!

A young man started working with my shipping crew a few years ago. His grandfather bought and brought him,to work, these boots and and a good pair of socks. This was his first job. The guys laughed and made a little fun of them. That is until he had them broke in. They were going through Nikes like water through a sifter and his back didn’t hurt.

As a man in his 50's these boots would literally last me the rest of my life.
I'm half that and they'd probably last the rest of mine too.
They would last me maybe 3 years tops. I try to keep them clean but every boot I've owned has become a nasty athletes foot factory by then. Honestly at 3 years I would have got my money's worth out of them for sure.

I've had my pair of Nick's for just over 2-1/2 years. I drive a 18 wheel gas/diesel tanker truck. The petroleum products are hard on the soft vibram soles, but the actual boot is holding up like a champ. With good quality wool socks (darn tuff, point6), my boots still have that warm comforting smell of fine leather after a hard day in 98 degree/98% humidity. Can't say that about any of my other footwear. I'm 55 years old and been driving a big truck for over 30 years. My only regret about the purchase of my Nick's Boots is that I didn't do it decades earlier. With the discount offered here, I think I'll buy a second pair in tan leather for everyday, off work use. Once broken in, they are the most comfortable boots I've owned. If you ever decide to pull the trigger on a pair, you won't be disappointed. Period - Full Stop

This seems to be a rarity theses days: high-priced footwear whose price is easily justified by the materials, craftsmanship, labor, and customer service. I almost regret having a cushy desk job with no need for a work boot, but then I could always get a pair of Nicks for the fashion appeal. Just opened another side savings account named "Nicks!". $50/month is going into that bad boy...
Wearing something rugged just for fashion, is just as lame as overpriced footwear thats bad quality.

Get the boots. I will say it's going to be VERY uncomfortable until you can get them broke in. I live in the exact town where Nick's and whites started. You could be looking at months to break them in if you're hardly on your feet. Once they do break in nothing with beat them for comfort not even talking just boots but anything in general.
Do it!!! You won’t regret having a good quality pair. They will literally last your lifetime!

I think one thing that would’ve been good to have a running timer. It would be cool to see how long it takes to break these guys down compared to other boots.

I wish I had video like this when I was taking shoe construction classes in college. This is amazingly informative. Making stacked heels, and hand nailed shoes is super tedious! I do not miss those semesters of stretching leather over a last.

Yea ive had to wear my fire boots through security before they kinda grumbled mostly at how long it took for me to get them off but I lost my gear and only hand my fire line stuff and I was bound to get home quickly so i went in my greens a tee shirt and my fire boots

@@elijahglinski9910 no way they can take your boots away. They X ray them, and if they are still very suspicious they might give them a more thorough check, but they are giving the boots back in their normal condition. Unless you are in a very corrupt country
A TSA nightmare
Since I was a kid I've been intrigued by the idea of shoes being assembled with nails -- most often seen in cartoons of fairy tales and the like depicting cobblers. I thought it was because shoes used to be made out of wood, and how surprised I was as an adult to see actual leather shoes being held with nails!
What still amazes me is where I see some nails and how long some are in videos online. It's just eye-opening how much material there is in well-made shoes.
I would have never in a million years thought taking a boot apart would be so fascinating. Yet here I am.

I'm really surprised how close some of those nails are to the insole.
I thought that as well. They're called clinch nails, and when they're hammered in against the metal shoe last during the building process, the end of the nail curves back around so it doesn't poke your foot.

The construction of these is crazy! It's amazing what goes into these and the price is more than fair for this level of quality. So impressive.

This video is of a quality I didn't expect when clicking on a man taking apart a boot. The commentary is super interesting and everything is so satisfying!
When I was an ortho shoe maker, we made a work shoe/ boot for a concrete worker. What you have there for the most part is what we did for him. Note the old fashion way of making the heal stack is to glue the layers and beat the thickness to maybe 60% of the original thickness. The leather shank would cover a metal shank as well. A long leather counter to cover the whole back half of the shoe.
I so love the look of these boots, being someone that spends anything up to 18 hours on my feet a day on concrete, grass, and mud on shows these look amazing, by the time I do the conversion they are $814 new Zealand dollars, hahaha . so I am going to start a piggy bank and every time I get the urge to buy a shitty pair of sneakers ill trash in 6 months il save the cash. Its great your videos are the best actual technical reviews, not just some influencer getting paid to promote products, thanks again.

Nick's are some REALLY GREAT boots!!! American made by hand and the amazing quality that goes with it. Now, they do cost a premium at around $480 a pair BUT you are definitely getting your money's worth!!! As you can see in this video, Nick's are top quality.

This is the first video I've seen on this channel, but I think the voice over was great. Just the right amount of talking, a lot of really cool information, it really kept me entertained the entire video.
Franks boots is worth checking out as well. When Nicks got bought out in 2013 they shifted more to quantity over quality so the old general manager Frank started his own boot company in the old Nick's location a couple years back to focus more on the custom fit market. They brought over some of the craftsmen from the Nicks shop as well. Supposedly the boots they turn out are superior in quality even to the stuff Nicks is turning out.
Would love to try one on. Also great to hear positive comments about stitch down construction. It’s a very effective, efficient and consistent way of boot making - if done correctly.
Wow. These things are amazing. It's great to have both perspectives of cutting in half plus this detailed teardown. Each lets you see things the other can't and together gives you a really great understanding of the boot.
I’m a newcomer to your channel, and I know nothing about boots, but I wanted you to know that this video was very interesting to watch. The knowledge that you bring, the visuals of seeing all of the layers of the boots, it was a great video to be introduced to!
I like the heel if I have to climb a ladder. It gives a little groove for the rung to sit in so I feel extra secure and it saves my calves from having to balance a wedge heel.

A video like this could be released in two versions, one for ASMR and the other with your voice over. You have a really calming voice and a no BS description style, so I don’t see the point unless you are passionate about creating a trendy playlist for your channel. You have been great since the start and I enjoyed watching you grow through your earlier videos.
You should do a dissection of a DC Shoe some time... I've worn the same DC 'Graffik' shoe for 16years, and only recently it started wearing out.. It's a shoe that I'm highly impressed with, and I bought myself another identical pair about a month ago.. Would be interested in seeing your opinion
Yes on the voice over. Especially on part two of a two-part series.
Mostly created for wildland firefighting, construction is made by a mold for persons foot, tight fit and narrow heel or wide. Depends on the measurements you send in. Now the fasteners nails and screws are there in case the glue does fail to hold during ground work in fire. And is a standard for almost all caulk boots.

Very old technology, but works! The nails keep the rubber in place, but flexible. I live in Brazil. Whaen i was young, there was no boot factories, so the shoe maker took the size of our feet and make the boot. Leather, rubber, glue and nails.
Please tell me you’re going to make a wallet from this boot as it would last forever.

I never have any boots and know nothing of them, but that was damn impressive! Amazing craftmanship and quality material, will consider buying it.
The fact that you had to work so hard to disassemble these boots speaks volumes about the quality. For an everyday warehouse job, I bet they could last a decade before needing any serious attention. After seeing so many shoes easily peeled apart by hand, it's good to see something handmade that will last.
