    Love the ending 😂. Would a small pond 12' x 8' need something like this if the water is currently draining fine with no standing water after normal rain?

    • @KoiAddiction

      Nope. Finishing it this year. It was a 3 year project in phases. We have 2 weeks left for completion and hook up the pumps. It is 60’x 120’ x 8-9’deep. Boulders up over 8 tons. BIG PRICETAG😎. There is over 1000 tons of boulders on the job- 300k just in rocks😂😂😂Stay tuned for action shots this summer!!

    Hi John,
    I have a question, did you have to raise one side of the drain pipe to allow the water to flow? I know you mentioned the hydrostatic pressure, but I'm just curious.
    I have a smaller koi pond and during the summer we get a lot of rain in Florida and I just had a plant shelf wall cave in b/c water got under my liner. When there's a lot of rain, it takes a day or so for my yard to drain so while I have the pond drained & rebuilding it I figured I would add a small drain like you have here with an area to drop a small sump pump.

    What’s your thoughts on using this on a larger scale for a lawn on a lake with a very bad water table? Lawn can only be mowed about two months out of the year if they are lucky so the rest of the time it’s like a hay field.

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will work anywhere but if the water table is always high you make need to “amp-up” the system for constant operation to avoid issues. I would consider raising the pond level as an alternative.

    Thanks for these videos - I love this series! Should gravity fed drainage work for this purpose? Assuming there's enough elevation drop of course. Someday I want to build a pond inside a greenhouse, which will have french drains or form-a-drain around its foundation.

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gravity drains will work and also you should know that if the drain lines are only a partial way up the side of the pond, the hydraulic pressure of a full pond will push water uphill through a pipe as long as it is below water level in the pond (if that makes sense?). Think of putting water in a big pan representing the water under the liner. Then put another pan full of water on top (representing the liner and the water it contains). The one on top will push the water below effectively forcing it out through a drain thats closer to the top-the water always takes the path of least resistance!

    You said you like using a larger, rounder type gravel to avoid clogs. What happens if it does clog? Is there a way to backflush the system or are we talking abouy a major teardown to fix the situation?
    By the way, you walking around in that empty basin fills me with anticipation for what that swim pond is going to end up looking like. Seriously... I think it moved a little 😆

    • @KoiAddiction

    It looked like you used a pvc pipe to connect the drain to sump vault. But could tell. Great job.

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely once we got past the point where we needed to let water into the corrugated pipe we shifted to schedule 40 to avoid the pipe getting smashed during the backfill and construction process.

    Is there certain soil types of regions that you'd recommend installing a drain system like this?

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clay souls or soils that don’t drain well especially. Unless you have sandy soils, i would just do it on a large job. A few thousand dollars isn’t worth needing it and not having it!

  • @mikegrissom55

    So..this will work for rainwater.....I think i will have a problems with rain water running under the liner. The pond i'm building is alot smaller, but i think this will work. The pond is on the down hill side of the slope

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MrCites1
      @MrCites1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KoiAddiction Primarily if it wasn’t packed in properly, and over time it packs down and subsides, with all the fines washing out during rainy events, and thus causing a void to start forming where the drain outlet runs
