Great episode as always. The Squisher stuff is funny af too but one of my favorite funny moments in one of Brienne's chapters in FFC is when Septon Meribald goes off to forgive the sins of a young maid, a pregnant woman, and an old lady and Ser Hyle remarks, "It would seem the gods walk with us... at least the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone.” Podrick looked so astonished that Brienne had to tell him no, they were only three marsh women.
I don't know why but that bit always cracks me up. Imagining Pod's face as he naively believes that he might be seeing 3 aspects of the Seven in the flesh is too much.
I honestly believe that when it comes time to knight Egg, Dunk will give in and admit to Egg that he was never truly knighted. And therefore can't knight him.. could lead to a beautiful "you're the truest knight i know" from Egg..
@00:29:30 - the bathtub as a metaphor for the cleansing of the soiled knight - damn - you two never miss a beat!
I feel that Identity is probably one of the biggest ongoing themes throughout the book.
John Lanouette Hi John, yeah identity is such a huge theme, and is attacked in so many different ways. The POV structure is perfect for an exploration of self/change/identity etc.Glad you enjoyed!
"The magic sword! I should have used the bloody sword!!" 🤣🤣🤣
The bear and the maiden fair song was awesome!!!!! Really woke me up for work lol.
Another triumph as always guys. Your clear, concise and I struggle to disagree with everything you say. Always so happy when you release another episode, keep it up!!
Snow Wolf123 Aw thanks Snow Wolf! We try and deliver the information as clearly as possible, it can be difficult, but it's a priority. Really glad you enjoyed the listen and double pleased about the nice comment. Hope you'll join us for a look at Ser Barristan in a few weeks ;) - yolkboy
Radio Westeros Cant wait!
I love the scene in the bathhouse when we hear about Jaime's past. It was amazing! And listening to it again was just lovely!
Thanks for listening and your comments Stephanie... and we love the bathhouse scene glad you do too ;)
I just remembered another link between Briene and Dunk: grave digging. I might be the only one who writes a comment for two year old video :D
Fantastic catch! Those scenes are so transformative for both characters, what a wonderful link. Thanks for the comment, even two years later :)
It's amazing how you guys have found seemingly all of the little bits of symbolism. It makes me appreciate GRRM works even more. Thank you for all of the hard work that you guys have put in to making these videos. They are fantastic.
Another great episode guys! Great topic, I like Brienne a lot. I felt the scene when she sees Catelyn as Lady Stoneheart was one of the most emotional scenes in the series.
Well done. Brienne is a character I have really come to appreciated more in each reread.
Full of rich characterizations and intriguing possibilities. Thanks and squish, squish.
I will be very very sad if Lady Stoneheart kills Podrick. Save my little boy! He's too precious to die.
I just realized something. Jamie was called a 'King Slayer' due to the
incident that he was involved in, even though he served with an honor
code.
Brienne was chased away from King Renley, and was probably also called a
'King Slayer' in his death, even though she, also, served with an honor
code.
Jamie and Brienne have even more in common - an irony in fate.
Another great vid guys, enjoyed it very much. Just posting regarding something I spotted recently relating to Brienne/Dunk. When Brienne parlays with Jaime at [ Arlan of.] Pennytree, not only is that a nice parallel [ Brienne/Pennytree.] but there is also a seven foot squire present, Hoster Blackwood. [ I like Hoster, bookish, and is/potentially full of info.]
I always thought this a really cool nod, and more evidence for the Brienne/Dunk theme, but I don't see it mentioned much, if at all. Anyhoo, again great vid, and look forward to you and HoW working together. Keep up the good work !
Wizz-The- Smith Hey Neil, yeah a possible interesting connection there, we didn't realise Hoster was that tall, and we've never seen anyone mention this as a Bri/Dunk hint. Nice thinking.
We will hopefully be guesting on History of Westeros' HBO coverage, and they have a slot on our upcoming Battle of Fire.
Thanks for sharing that, and glad youre enjoying ;)
Radio Westeros Thanks guys, really glad to help, or add some new thinking. I've just noticed the Wiki has Hoster's age at 16-17, so another similarity.
Looking forward to any HBO coverage with HoW, I watched all their vids with Shaun last series, + Aziz and Ash are very fair with book/show comparisons. I've spent a lot of time on the Riverlands [ RL web @ Westeros ] and was disappointed to see Jaime going to Dorne. [ we still have Brienne + Pod, here's hoping.] But having just finished a marathon catch up on the HBO show, I look forward to your opinions. ;)
Muhahaha! the crab advert at the end stole the show!! What an amazing shout out, he is totally awesome as a funny side character. Your shows are getting better and better! I recommend you to all the Westeros fans I meet. Can't wait for the next one!
NeoLudditevisons Hi Neo, we think Nimble Dick is really funny and improcves on a reread. Really glad you think the shows are improving and that you're spreading the word. Thanks very much!!!-yb and LG
fuck yeah I wasn't expecting a Irish rockabilly version of a asoiaf song loved it and the episode
Nah, the funniest part in A Feast for Crows is the tales of Bronn. But Nimble Dick is a great moment too.
Well, that's not an underrated aspect of the book. It's actually one of the more awesome parts of the books. In Nimble Dick, we have a minor character that sticks out in a storyline that not a lot of people embraced.
Your readings give a new life to my favorite chapters! Thank you so much!
Guys, thank you so much for your work!! I love the way you build your podcasts' episodes, and it is centainly different than everything out there!! Thank you guys for brighting up my days and keep up with your great work!! :)
Esther Araujo Hi Esther, we do aim to be different and brightening up your day is what we like to do ;)
We'll try and keep it up, hope you keep listening!
Love your podcast guys. Whenever I see a new episode downloading on my phone I'm filled with pure joy. Along with History of Westeros, you are my favorite A Song of Ice and Fire podcast. Keep up the great work! I am waiting very impatiently for the next episode on Barristan the Bold.
Blake Conroy Pleased to say we'll be guesting on History of Westeros' 'casts re. the new series of the show! And very glad you've found our podcast Blake, we hope we can keep you entertained ;)
Welcome back. You have become my favorite asoiaf themed TH-cam channel along with AA podcast. Not a lot of tin foil or cracked pottery here. Thanks for that.
Thanks! And we're friends with Aziz and Ash, they have a great podcast!
Everytime I hear your voices I imagine Robb Stark and Melisandre having a nice chat about the show. lol. I love your videos! Do a Dany one. :)
Juliana Ono Dany is currently under discussion... we will definitely do a Stormborn episode. Thanks for commenting Juliana!
Squishers ain't no joke.
Squishers sound just like Deep Ones from H.P.Lovecraft's "A Shadow Over Innsmouth"--and I don't doubt that is deliberate.
Do you know of any essays addressing this? There is a number of Lovecraft references throughout the World and I've been working on a piece compiling them.
Great show! I am actually one of those people who thought Brienne's chapters are boring. I liked nimble Dick though... even so, I completely missed the squishers' funny side. I really like what GRRM has done with the idea of a perfect knight. The most chivalrous knights in the series are the girl, the man who resents knights and the gay guy. Quite opposite to the classic ideals, yet beautifully crafted. I wish you would do a show about Ser Duncan the tall :)
I always look forward to your videos, this channel is one of my favorites. Great work.
dragonflying007 Thanks dragonflying, really glad you're enjoying listening!
ah..finally... i always enjoy hearing your view on the asoiaf...keep doing it guys..
lord rogue we will try and keep it up, and we appreciate the encouragement lord rogue!
Yeeeaaahhh! haven't even listen to it yet but yyeeeaahh!
Just brilliant. Thank you!
Yes! Finally! Thanks guys!
If Nimble Dick Crabb was to be portrayed in the show I think that perfect person to be cast as him would be Michael Palin from Monty Python. They would never do it though because he is too minor a character. Just a playful thought.
Through my first reading I felt Brienne was boring and affc was the weakest book. But after another reading I've come to appreciate her POV for all the info it reveals on key secondary characters. And affc is a much stronger book than I previously thought.
where u wanna be yeah, following on from the excitement and chaos of SoS wasn't easy, and ffc does have a different tone. But a lot of people say the same as you, it improved on reread.
Loved the episode! I wish you had done a reading of septon Meribald's Epic broken men speech.
caprico82 Thank you! If we'd had time for a third reading that would've been it for sure :)
Always great episodes. Looking forward to more. I hope you do an episode on the wildlings as they have some truly interesting characters and would like to hear your thoughts on the theories surrounding them.
i think the squishers might be a kin to the ancient people of the Isle of Toads similar descriptions and the Iron Islands also mention half human fishy people
Felicia Amat Hi Felicia.... Yes there's things in the World Book that might be the basis of squisher legends, it's very interesting to know about the strange tales of weird people/fish-people etc ;)Thanks for listening!
Felicia Amat And what if that ties in whith the having of Grey scale?
Great work. You have convinced me to re read the Brienne chapters in Riverlands. I find your interpretation of the valanquor prophecy as refreshing & plausible. But I still am not convinced that she is a descendant of Duncan the Tall. May be its because when I read it , I didn't consider it as a possibility & what the mind doesn't know the eyes don't see.
Once again, thanks for the great job. Would like if you could do something on my favourite house in Westeros, The Greyjoys. Do let me know if would.
+kaushik de Thank you! The Greyjoys are definitely on our list, whether that comes before or after TWoW will depend on the publication announcement as we are now planning 2016 with many asterisks and contingencies to allow for that eventuality :)
You are being a true GRRM fan to use asterisks & contingencies.
I have a suggestion. Kindly consider it if you deem it useful. I find your pseudoadverts - witty & unique. I think you guys should publish them separately also. People would love to hear them.
Thanks for that! We've considered that actually, and if time ever allows a collection of our readings and/or adverts would be a fine thing. At this point it's simply a matter of *having* time to produce something like that. But I must say, we are very pleased you appreciate them.
Hopefully you will publish something before the Kraken weds the Dragon. I believe crow's eye will change the outlook of westoros towards the Iron Islands. He is the Donald Trump of Westeros everyone loves to hate him but he hasn't put a foot wrong
good work, thanks
The Borells do have webbed fingers. Who knows... Others exist. The Borells may be linked to them. Or maybe the people of Crackclaw Point transformed the Borell raiders into monsters of legend.
First Time on your channel very impressed
Keep up the good work.
Just subscribed
abdi jama Glad you found us abdi, thanks for commenting ;)
Out of curiousity, how long (roughly) does it take you guys to write, make and record each episode?
acrefray we end up with half an hour of podcast a week, and that's our evenings and weekends. It's hard to be precise about the different processes because we work on multiple episodes at the same time and there's lots going on. But yeah it averages out 30mins of podcast for a weeks work.
1:00:43 this made me so sad reading it, he was so kind 😔
Ser Clarence Crabb would have been the ideal bloke for a trial by combat. An easy victory aboard his Aurochs within 30 seconds. Simples!
love the work keep them coming!!!!! please please please do a DAVOS video before dany plzzz.....dany is so cliche and there is a billion discussions on her
Adam K Thanks for listening Adam... we aren't currently working on Davos, but we hope to one day!
Poorquentyn (from tumblr & now TH-cam) is about to do a Davos segment on his channel soon :)
What is your next episode going to be about n when will it be coming out?
Nunya Next is Barristan, in about a week ;)
Fantastic as always! Who's next?
Kevin Moore Hi Kevin, Ser Barristan Selmy will be next, and the Battle of Fire after that ;)
Radio Westeros good choice!
Radio Westeros
Brienne and Barristan are among my favorite characters.
Thanks for another great show! I love the Arthurian themes running through the Brienne/Jaime arcs.
I am anxious/curious about how Jaime, Brienne, and Cat/LS's vows come into play in the WoW.
38:53 The Bear and the Maiden Fair
I love Brienne in the books, hate her in the show.
ça donne quoi en Français? snif je ne comprend pas un mot
+melinda arnaud Nous sommes vraiment desoles! Nous ne parlons pas tres bien le francais ;)
+Radio Westeros d'accord merci quand-même
Do you have people making subtitles in any languages ?
Yo soy española y tampoco comprendo un mot XD, pero no me rendire
It seems to me that simply criticizing Randyll Tarly as a misogynist is a rather narrow interpretation of the character. You have to remember that he is also the father of Samwell Tarly and that he disowned him and sent him to the Wall for the exact same reason that he hates Brienne. It's because neither of them could fit into their roles in society. Just my thoughts.
I think his hatred of Sam is rooted in sexist ideas of masculinity and what it means to be a man being defined in opposition to feminine pursuit. In order for his worldview to work there have to be strict gender roles and male roles must be practiced by men. Sam takes more feminine hobbies and even means of politics and Brienne is similarly defying gender roles.
Always great episodes. Looking forward to more. I hope you do an episode on the wildlings as they have some truly interesting characters and would like to hear your thoughts on the theories surrounding them.
