- Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed (born March 2, 1942) is an American rock musician, songwriter, and photographer.[1] He is best known as guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of The Velvet Underground, and for his solo career, which has spanned several decades. Though the Velvet Underground were a commercial failure in the late 1960s, the group has gained a considerable cult following in the years since its demise and has gone on to become one of the most widely cited and influential bands of the era.[2] As the Velvet Underground's principal songwriter, Reed wrote about subjects of personal experience that rarely had been examined so openly in rock and roll, including sexuality and drug culture.
After his departure from the group, Reed began a solo career in 1971. He had a hit the following year with "Walk on the Wild Side", although he subsequently lacked the mainstream commercial success its chart status seemed to indicate.[3] Reed's work as a solo artist frustrated critics wishing for a return of the Velvet Underground. In 1975, Reed released a double album of feedback loops, Metal Machine Music, upon which he later commented, "No one is supposed to be able to do a thing like that and survive."[4]
In 2008, Reed married performance artist Laurie Anderson.[5] - Wikipedia

Lou is being sarcastic. He has a dry sense of humor. That is why I love Lou!😍
He was nearly ALWAYS being sarcastic in interviews. He had that dry sense of humor, yes. You'll even see him betray a little corner smile at one point. He just thought interviews were mostly absurd, and he had that rock n roll attitude, and he just loved messing with these people. Some people got it, and you could tell when he liked them for that. Others didn't, and he'd be brutal to them.
@@dkelly26666 deep down I think he was a teddy bear. He just didn’t wanna admit it
And to respond to you - he is NOT being sarcastic at all. He is being dead serious
I’m not joking. That’s why I love Lou. He speaks his mind no matter what anyone thinks at all. No BS. And he tells the truth allot especially in this
@@clc-gl4jn oh yeah... British can play nothing? so serious
Being introverted and expected to explain art to someone not artistic themselves was probably a total drag. Like Dylan he probably just toyed with them to amuse himself knowing they would not understand anyway.
You are so sexy
Rest In peace Lou Reed. You are a legend! :)
He's not Dead!!!!
"I DON'T THINK THE BRITISH SHOULD PLAY ROCK N ROLL!" LoL Oh Lou, you arrogant fuck! This interview made my day!
I'm glad Lou took THIS interview seriously. Good to hear what he really thought. He put journalists on sometimes, and rightfully so because of their crappy questions. I enjoyed hearing him being facetious with a pack of journalists but it's good to hear what he really thought in this interview. RIP Lou
I like the fact he brought up Davies.
Haha yeh me too. I was buzzin wen I heard that - I am sad af
And the Stones.
Haha, that's the thing about Lou tho, he definitely would say very outlandish things in his interviews, and at times you wonder what was true and what was not, and i guess it really depended on his mood also.
The comments are taking a Lou Reed interview seriously and it's ridiculous
I don't take anything by Lou seriously. He was a hack.
@@markrago7217 Well, Yes, just one of the greatest musicians of all time, with a dozen masterpiece albums behind him, lol
I hope you're cured
@@II-xl7lj Eh, that's a matter of opinion. I had a couple Lou compilations, they were monotonous and uninspiring to me. I like some Velvet songs, but Cale, Nico, etc., figured into that equation too.
@@markrago7217 Calling Lou monotonous is like calling Sinatra a rapper, I don't know, like, lol
And judge a musician with a discography of a dozen albums, from punk to Blues with conceptual ones, by couple compilations.. I don't even know what to call it, it's nastily
Are you fucking serious? What can generally a person with such a small wealth of knowledge about music talk about
@@II-xl7lj As I said, I suppose it's a matter of taste. People rave about Cony Island Baby, it doesn't do anything for me. It seems like even at his loosest he took himself and his music far too seriously. I love Iggy Pop and Bowie, love the MC5 and Alice Cooper. Lou just doesn't do it for me. If you enjoy his work, more power to you.
Lou reed was a rock genius.
... in his own mind.
He couldn't play music. That Velvet Underground was a joke.
@@lucasbeer353 Okay
@@lucasbeer353 Jokingly created the greatest band of all time, lol
Everyone would have such a sense of humor))
By the way, he is a great guitar player, you have to be a vegetable not to understand this
@@infotrad You think this is funny, you stupid vile bastard? Give at least one argument against to consider Lou one of the greatest rockers on the type of Lennon
At the beginning of this interview, the expression on his face is like me when I arrive at work. Oh God, do I have to do this, again? Please let this be over, NOW!
Lou might really think the beatles are trash but he doesn't mean the whole british rock sucks part (considering his work with Bowie), it's just him saying nonsense as usual in interviews
I think that rock and roll is from the US. The other is just an interpretation from rock, a different thing. Like white hip hop, it's not hip hop, it's a different thing
He also had a lot of respect for Lennon, but the fact that the Beatles are garbage is definitely his real opinion, I can't imagine that he's even neutral about such pop groups
Both the Beatles and Bowie are pretty shit and represent what went wrong with rock, though there are plenty of worthy British rock acts
I'm surprised by two things.
1. He's sober enough to give the interview.
2. He gives more than one word answers. I didn't know he was so gifted.
Lol
"I don't think the British should play rock n' roll" .... brilliant.
Its true because they literally all pretty much stole ideas and concepts from original American music like doo-wop and blues.
Meh. Idk.
@@jordanpetersonon200mgdiaze3 he seemed ok with Bowie
@@peterlukach310 Bowie is one of the exceptions to this. Always happens. What cultural music genre has any kinda of relevant inspiration compared to legendary doo-wop & Motown genres in UK?
@@jordanpetersonon200mgdiaze3 I agree to an extent. I feel like one could make the same argument for k-pop.
BRILLIANT concrete and steel honesty
Lou is great.... its so funny to me that people take his interviews seriously and write crazy comments,,, if he were alive he would love scrolling down the comments and just laugh at the peopolr writing all these crazy things,,,
lou reed: i really hate british rock and roll and the beatles
also lou: *works heavily with david bowie*
also lou: george harrison is one of my favourite guitarist
this man is a legend
Good point. Maybe he was referring to the Fifties-style rock n'roll he grew up with (having referred to doo-wop). The US was always better than the UK at that, in the early years. (And I'm British).
John Cale, from Wales, in the Velvet Underground
HEY! He's not arrogant and full of himself, he's from NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!!!!!
(insert rimshot here)
what does it mean?
New Yawkers! They got the spirit! No B.S.!
Louie grew up in New Jersey or was it Long Island? Shit I can remember.
i hope this is sarcasm
He's not arrogant at time. not here. but he can be.
With fairness, this interviewer has been one of the better Ive seen encounter the Lou.
Lol what's Lou talking about with London lol, he says the only reason he went there in the early 70s was because it was the only place any good music was being made. He's like Dylan haha, take everything he says with a pinch of salt.
I love how he totally discounted the Beatles but notes The Stones. Lou was always facetious with the journalists but a class act through and through.
I think he's wrong about Brits being incapable of rock and roll, but its just his opinion and he's entitled to it. He is still brilliant and very funny whatever he might think
RIP Lou Reed.
1. Don't take a Lou Reed interview seriously, he was great friends with an obscure British rocker you probably don't know, David Bowie.
2. The Beatles weren't as great as everyone says they are.
3. The Velvets were better and very underrated.
+Justin Letcavage The Beatles changed the world you moron.
elvis presley By making mostly safe and popular music?
elvis presley Why do I need to be able to play music in order to listen to and judge music? Lou could play music better than most people and he still didn't like the Beatles. I'm pretty sure I know my family history more than you know mine but alright. Does that logic imply that you cannot criticize world leaders without being as successful of a world leader? That's ridiculous. And you're racist too? Can't even say I'm surprised. Go fuck yourself you racist, elitist asshole.
+Justin Letcavage The Velvet Underground are popular, the Beatles weren't safe man they were experimental in their day, objectively
jonathan maloberti Not on the scale of the Beatles and not when they were still together. What songs or albums from the Beatles do you feel are experimental? They weren't experimental at all compared to avant-garde artists of the time.
Besides Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road, and baroque stuff like Strawberry Fields I don't feel like they were that great. Had those been their only works, they'd deserve a lot of the praise they get.
"and I suppose they should learn how to cook" LOL
This interview is one of the few I have found of Reed not destroying a reporter ahah.
Why did Lou hate The Beatles, so much? The Beatles and VU had one thing in common. They both were equally influential. For that matter, VU might have went on to be even more influential than The Beatles. Listen to "Venus In Furs" and tell me if you have ever heard anything like that before. It is sad that it took the world decades to acknowledge the fact that they were such an important band. The music of VU changed my life, forever! Thank you Lou, for being true, to you!🖤
You are so so right. It's ridiculous how good Venus in Furs is and even more that it was made in the '60s. When I first heard it, it blew my mind. VU were ahaid of their time.
@@tzian7051 The only song that manages to not only blow my mind, but put me in a whole different dimensions, and this is coming from someone who listens to stuff such as Electric Wizard.Venus in Furs is the most authentic song ive ever heard,at least as rock n roll goes, but maybe even further than just rock.
he didn't hate the beatles, he was full of shit.
I'm pretty sure he was being serious. Look at his influences, practically none of them were british except for The Kinks and, as he said here, the Stones. Many massively influential American groups listened to very little British rock, like the Doors, Stooges, Jefferson Airplane, or just hated British rock, like Beefheart and Zappa. If Lou didn't like British rock, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
In fact, even the stones and kinks can't be counted as VU influences, since they were contemporaries and the music was very different. In fact, no group had any influence on VU, and this is a very significant point, they can be counted with full confidence to the " forefathers"
Zappa thought The Beatles were "OK", but found the Stones more "entertaining", because of their Rhythm and Blues influences. Later on he thought their music was done because it was "product".
Such a good interviewer!!
Thank you
"This is mister ... ou Reed." haha awesome.
Love a lot of Lou Reed & a lot should stand it's time in history, but because he was in the hard city life doesn't mean 60's hippy music was junk as he said. Just his opinion, taste, & attitude! This was one of the few interviews I've seen of his that he wasn't just a ass! & I like most of his music!!!
2:53 "and I suppose they should learn how to cook" lmao. He's right about that and the music.
I could say that about Americans too. Horrible food.
Fernando Graça How are those Ratmeat Tacos?
@@bob733333 weak
He's wrong. Lou is a hack
@bob733333 Yea med food kills Grease stuff dude. I mean c'mon.
Lou is pretty gentle on Bill, (considering how hard Lou can be on interviewers). The reason is because Bill shows a genuine passion and interest for music (albeit from a layman's perspective) which is missing from most of those in his position.
Would John Cale count as a British influence?
RIP, LOU. (Love you.)
Lou saying the British shouldn't play rock and roll was very funny!
He's giving Bill Boggs 'the business'
Thanks for all the great music. It will live on and become classic.
Lou looked like he was still believing in the power of positive drinking, LOL.
The British rock.
"I don't like the Beatles; I like the Stones." I've been saying that for years ...
No, he isn't. All the cooler artists that arose from then were all Stones guys and gals. Don't try to pretend otherwise ...
Sullen Morbius have you ever listened to Loaded? that album is basically a Beatles tribute.
Sullen Morbius
So have I. Ever since they first came on the scene.
Sullen Morbius Of course he's being sarcastic. Never take anything Lou ever said at face value. Ever.
pudman31 Wrong. Stones were far more popular with more cutting-edged artists of the time. Jagger was also hanging in the same circles as Lou i.e., Warhol, Bowie. Iggy Pop says it was the Stones who changed him. Lou was also part of that movement. Also, why would he be sarcastic on the question of the Beatles and the Stones? Lol ...
I love this guy.
Lou was perfect
Thanks BillBoggs!!
Well, it's kind of funny that Lou doesn't like english rock when David Bowie was producer on Velvet Underground's first record!
Leather jacket/dark sunglasses era Lou is my favorite.
i liked boggs. a pretty even-handed reporter and a fixture in the NYC scene for decades
Thanks, Frank
00:30 "ooh reed" lol
Where's the rest of the interview??????
I really like Lou Reed and was listening to him in the 1960s. Buying VU records and seeing them live back then, in Boston.
But whenever I listen to the VU album "Loaded" which I think is a masterpiece, I always think of it as a child of the Beatles album.
Lou being Lou that's all.
I just wish he had taken better care of himself sooner, like his "sole brother" (sic) King Dion.
smilin' Lou Reed
That was the most sluggish depressing intro song i think i have ever heard.
I'm pretty sure it was Lou Reeds music.
Great interview
Reassuringly awkward like a great artist should be. God bless you Lou and rest in peace.
Zappa didn't hate british rock...He was a fan of Queen, Gentle Giant, Black Sabbath, etc. He just preferred jazz, r&b and classical to rock music in general.
'I never took British rock n roll seriously" David Bowie changed his mind perhaps?
He did say he liked the Stones though
Yes, even Lou liked Peter Gabriel.
sounds like lou was yanking the interviewer' chain
Aha! So John Cale's departure from the Velvets in 1968 is explained - he was British...
Welsh
@@peteormond2254 that’s under the umbrella term of British. Wales is England’s bitch

Hey BillBoggs can you post the remainder of the interview? It's a good one
...l was so sorry it stopped. ...
I really think he was joking about British musicians because he later says he likes The Stones. It was a very dry joke.
at least interviewer is listening to the answers & not just waiting to rattle off a list of questions.
Asking Lou why velvets were different from the hippie shit, good question.
i was literally thinking what he said before he said it about the critics thing
Bill Boggs quickly leans backwards at 1:48 because he thinks Lou is about to headbutt him.
He's right about British music.
Yeah he's right about the cook thing. Even because in America they are great cooks in meth and fentanyl.
I hope he liked The Kinks and Prefab Sprout.. great british bands .)
He had a point. The British groups was a vaudeville circuit interpreting an genuine American artform. Sometimes with great inventiveness.
Excepted that Lou Reed wouldn't be there without british rock evolution. Anyway i love the musician.
good interview
yeah very strange comment to make actually, he covered John Lennon in a live performance...
Not liking the Beatles is a bold comment.
What about John Cale ...he is british
Hard to know whether to believe him or not (hates all British rock music?). He puts up this wall that's not easy to penetrate.
If you really believe anything Lou Reed says then i'm convinced you all believe in fairies...
Lou was butthurt because the music press in the UK gave him such a hard time. But the British on rock music has been great. A lot of American blues musicians were treated like bums in their homeland before the British invasion. Until British bands credited the blues with its influence. a lot of Americans had little interest in the genre.
awesome
I don't know how seriously to take Reed's comments since he had so much disdain for interviews but if he genuinely thinks the Beatles are "garbage", it's blatant jealousy to me. There's plenty of Beatles songs I don't care for but Lennon/McCartney had more songwriting talent in their pinkies than Reed would have ever realized in his entire career and he knows that.
Poor Bill!
Get back! Lou doesn't take compliments well.
R.I.P
I can't believe he didn't like the Beatles...!
There was also a Brit IN the Velvet Underground, plus Lou is always lying to the press for shock and humour
He has always said he didn't like the beatles and the british invasion bands. Why is so hard to understand for some of you?
“The British” - Bowie and Mick Ronson in particular MADE your solo career.....ever heard of Transformer? Hello!
He looks good
@kartoffelmozart Bowie did Lou Reed's second solo album. Andy Warhol did the Velvet's first album....
"i don't think they should play anything" hahahahahahaha
They seemed to get along.
The man love New York..
David Bowie actually produced one of Lou Reeds albums.
Surely he was kidding with those comments. I mean an intelligent guy saying something so obviously wrong.....I think the UK probably appreciated his music more than anyone.
Jajajaja why? Rock and roll is from the US, the other musicians from other countries make their copies and interpretations from it
Hey, what happened to the rest of this interview???
Only Lou Reed can perfectly mix snideness with stupidity.
What vibe was that at the start of this clip
A witty response to this eludes me as I've no idea who or what a 'Lulu' is.
That's Lou for you, he won't apologize for his opinions. You can see where he's coming from though- rock n' roll was born in america and represented the culture there, while the british movement just copied it. But the Brits did push it forward, with out led zep and sabbath I have no idea where music would be
What is that noise in the backround?
Yeah Lou, but they make a mean cuppa tea!
flagemdown66 Asians actually own tea.
I know that he like stones. because he tributes the intro of “hitch hike”of stones in “there she goes again”.
Yes, it is a direct rip off.
Hitch Hike although performed by The Stones on Out Of Our Heads, 1965 was written by Marvin Gaye and 2 others.
What do the stones have to do with this, lol? This is a Marvin Gaye song, and the fact that one little riff in TSGA is borrowed, and has been known to everyone for so long
@@thedirtyfecker What's that got to do with it, idiot? It's just about borrowing
Lou Reed didn't say he was anti-brit,he said he was anti-brit take on rock.
What a vague statement. I have one artists to call BS? ELTON JOHN ! RIP.
This is true the Stones destroy the beatles
