  • Velvet Underground main men LOU REED and JOHN CALE are interviewed (separately....darn it!) on the Sunday morning program A+E REVUE on June 8th, 1990. Andy Warhol and his influence upon the band and scene are discussed and they play a track from their album SONGS FOR DRELLA a tribute to the Pop Artist. That song is posted separately.

Fascinating to see the famously difficult and grumpy and nasty Reed in a good mood, even laughing. People are complicated, all of us. He was proof of it.

The more i study him the more i like him. And there are plenty of times i wish i could act the same towards fools.

Yes, it made a really pleasant change to see him so relaxed and smiley

I could only imagine what your persona would be like as a Legend of Music and song like Lou Reed was. Maybe you will get grumpy and nasty being harassed 24/7 by the media in those days.Do me a favor please, go to the closest mirror and you can find and give yourself an uppercut ok - maybe that will wake you up Mike...

I thought John Cale's comments were interesting at the end. It was a shame their renewed collaboration didn't last.

I like what he said about English bands singing with American accents. Perhaps why he admired Ray Davies who stayed away from all that.

Wow, this interviewer really did his research, never seen lou be so happy with an interview.

Lou seemed most at ease personally and artistically in this era (Drella/New York)

This interviewer put the work in and actually even appreciated these two. This is why Lou isn't rude to him. He was never rude to non-douchebags.

Don't engage in splitting and idealization with your idols. Lou Reed was a brilliant songwriter but he was well capable of being a douche himself, and being nasty to perfectly pleasant people

John acknowledged the fact both of them could produce the great work that none of two could have ever dreamt of on their own. Lou never seemd to realize how much John was important to him.

Allthough I'm so touched by the music of Velvet Underground and that kind of spirit of Andy Warhol, I didnt care about the members of Velvet Underground, and had only realized Lou Reed and Nico. Three days from Today, on Sunday the 26. February 2023, John Cale performes in Leipzig, Germany. I googled his name a found him Co-founder of Velvet Underground and part of this amazing music, time and people with and around Andy Warhol. Today its about 25 years ago, when this crossed my life, when my friends and me discoverd the music of VU and the Andys art. As much as others like Beatles, Bowie, Hendrix, Santana, Zappa, Antonionis "Blow Up", etc. I was on art-schol in post-communism estern germany. After 1990, this time had a lot of positiv upheaval and departure. At that time I/we just read the biography/biopic of Ultraviolet/Isabell Dufresne "Andy Warhol-Superstar", - we only knew about this book. All that had a deep impact on us. Surely because of our youth and the political and cultural time.
Some years later in 2001, I got to know the LP "Songs for Drella". (At this time we hadn´t all LPs - old and new - in our musicstore or library and alltough we had to live our own lifes)
The Album "New York" from Lou Reed I got to know around 2003 and its one of this less albums I heard and hear quantitatively more then all the other.
As I became more involved with Andy's art, I realized that it doesn't appeal to me that much, or maybe I just don't understand it.
Thank you Mr. ... for uploading this historical tv- interview. Your introduction is top and some kind of funny, with the the bookshelf behind.
John Cale now I really appreciate/love as main part of Velvet Underground. Best regards from germany.

There was always tension between Reed and Cale even before they became famous. Perhaps Reed was jealous of Cale, but I what I do know is that Reed made a pass at Cale in the very early days of VU and that's probably when the tension escalated because Cale made it clear that he wasn't interested in him in that way.
