Between 1969 and 2007 we ran the Rubicon 34 times and on 8 of those trips we took a couple of extra days and ran Barrett Lake trail. The last time on Barrett was 2003, the rocks look bigger now than they were then. Nice vid as usual!
The trail is more eroded and some re-routing was done to save it. It is tougher than I remember it back in the day, for sure, but we still had a great time in our little rigs!
When your story starts out you are driving past what looks like a trail closed gate and go 30' past turn left to start driving over Jeep sixed rocks for the rest of the trip IT DOSEN'T get any better that. Thank you for your time. Paul
I wish I would have known about this trail when we ran the rubicon, we will be going back will have to add this to the trip. You did those 4 trails in 7 days? Not a lot of time to relax.
We did the rubicon from Wentworth Springs in 10 hours. We did not rush thru it but we also did not stop to take a lot of pictures either. IMO, this trail and Fordyce are harder than the rubicon but certainly not more beautiful.
Are your jeeps modified or are they in stock configuration?Looks as though they have lockers possibly? Are they regeared .. either way love watching them tackle stuff. Great video
Thanks for watching. All of these jeeps have locking differentials and all but one has lower than stock gearing. We call it “locker stocker”. There are some variants to the class but a locker stocker in its purest form only has modification that are undetectable from the outside such as lockers and lower gearing. Two of the vehicles have modified motor/drive trains. The lead Landrover “Penalty Box”, and the MB named “BAM BAM” we call this “Super Stocker”. Both classes share one parameter which is that the wheels have to be stock (16x4.5) … which means the tires can’t much exceed 31” …
… the 80 series Landrover “SweetPea”, has a stock engine and stock gearing. The driver, Jesse drove it from Oregon to California. Somewhere along the way, the motor started running on 3 cylinders. You will see in this series of videos that with stock gearing and 3 cylinders he has to struggle but sticks with it and makes it. He is a gifted wheeler. …
Timm in “Penalty Box” lead us on the trail. Being the leader, he was the guinea pig. We watched and learned from his tactics. The other jeeps have stock motors/drivetrains. Even though they are quite capable, 80 year old vehicles can have issues on the trail. It is good to have at least one “Super Stocker” in the group if recovery is needed. This is my 11th season in BAM BAM, I have found that for the most part, the stock 4 cyl engines are plenty capable on the trails at least in the west. In the east, horsepower can be an advantage.
I'm 63 and don't miss wheeling like that sorry but I love my gears lockers snd 40 inch tires I can have a cold beverage in my hand snd go up the gate keeper lol
I've worked up the "food chain" of tire / build size for the last 40 years, was 38" tires 25 years ago, 40" 10 years ago, went down to 37" 8 years ago, and now down to 31"...... I'm more engaged, excited, and happy than ever before..... some like the easy, cush way out. We don't ! I'm happy for you, I get it, but I woudn't be happy in your rig.
I think I had more fun before I started modifying my Jeep? My CJ6 started as a worn out hardtop standard shed and I slowly built what my teenage brain wanted. I ended up with a combined lift of 7 inches on 37s and use to break things a lot. As I learnt more about 4wheeling I added lockers ,power steering and an auto and upgraded things as they broke and had a very capable rig. 30 years later as my back got worse the CJ6 slowly became lower with smaller tyres. It’s now on 33s and 2 -3” lift and still goes where I want, you just have to try a little harder. Great video and thanks for sharing!

Would love to wheel with you guys. Mine is a 95 YJ, but hey, on 33s and leaf springs, so still pretty traditional.

@@jpetrowich that’s cool. 👍 I just got my M715 and love watching “stock” rigs do stuff that high money built ones do.

We like to be challenged. It’s not for everyone. I get it.
