Lakeisha, you can tell that you are a really great mom and aunt. You said you would do anything for your kids. I came to a realization years ago that the expression “I would die for my kids” is more than one grand gesture. Eating out multiple times a week had to die. Shopping uncontrollably had to die. I die little deaths every day that add up to a bright future for the kids. You can do this. It’s going to be difficult to make different choices but you can do it! Legit love gives us fortitude. @CambieSweets This is a good point and a profound insight that isn't discussed much at all. Having an abundance of money frees up mental bandwidth typically. Being in poverty for long does the opposite and creates a mental prison of chronic survival mode even after the person is long out of poverty.
People that have been overweight and then later lost massive amounts of weight report a similar phenomenon whete the mind doesn't yet match current situation - mind is still "overweight" while body is now skinny. Very interesting indeed.

Dietitian here. Ramit's clients need a forensic accountant to do a deep dive into these couples' finances. I do the same for my clients who want/need to lose weight. I equate eating that's not being tracked, to "blind-eating", the same as Ramit teaching people who overspend are actually "blind spending".
If you want to change something about your life, it MUST be focused on. If you fail to plan....then plan to fail. I so wish Ramit would team up with Gail Vaz-Oxlade from Canada. Her show "Til Debt Do Us Part" was awesome and it really opened people's eyes when they see that they're spending way more than they think on stupid stuff. I do the same for my clients when I add up all the calories they're actually eating. People don't realize their whole day's worth of calories can be wasted on a fast food meal.

100%!! I started tracking my macros and calories and it's shocking how many calories a meal really ends up being when you buy it from a restaurant vs making it at home. Often eating out means I can only eat twice a day to stay within my calories vs 3 full nutritious meals made at home. Same thing goes with finances, spending without thinking can often mean you can only afford 2 of something meaningful to you versus 3 of whatever that is.

So many things zipped through my mind while watching this session. I don’t drink or smoke but I know people that do. If somebody is spending $300 a month on alcohol and cigars is it realistic to think they’re going to go to zero? Lakisha, like me, seems to be a bit of a people pleaser. She’s going to need to keep that in check to take good care of herself moving forward. I spent $35.38 a month for my phone. I have never run out of time and I use my phone for business. It’s a Verizon plan with no contract which companies everywhere offer. There is no reason people need to spend $100 a month on a phone! I think Ramit hit the nail on the head on so many factors of their finances. James and Lakisha are so courageous and generous to share so much with all of us. I wish them all the best and would love to hear a follow up in one year.❤❤

LaKiesha should be encouraged to examine her concept of "conflict".
"Firing my therapist involves conflict" is not an objective standard because not everyone leaving their therapist would agree.
Anyway, firing/leaving a therapist can be done diplomatically. Rather than "You're Fired!", reframe and rephrase to fir example, "I've reached a place in life where I'm ready to continue on my own. But if something comes up or I sense I'm moving backwards, I'll contact you ".

Never too late to start being more responsible financially. If you are a financial gambler, don’t take out loans, cut up your cards, setup automatic saving accounts and just invest in government bonds.

I think Ramit hit the nail on the head on so many factors of their finances. James and Lakisha are so courageous and generous to share so much with all of us. I wish them all the best and would love to hear a follow up in one year.❤❤

I think telling the daughter "I can't buy you X because I'm saving" is not ideal. He'll be saving until retirement. That means he'll never spend on his kid again. Instead, he should budget for his kid and be transparent about it.
Example: growing up in my family, us kids either got a birthday party or $100, our choice. Chirstmas was $50 or gift. We got $20 a month for allowance to use as we wanted for "splurge" things (in Ramit terms: "guilt free spending"). If we wanted a $100 purchase, we either pooled money, skipped having a birthday party, or saved. This taught us budgeting, discipline, and the value of what we asked for. If you add it all up, that's $390 a year or $32.50 a month. Numbers are a little dated, but you can bump it 50% for ~$50/month ($150 birthday, $75 Christmas, $30 allowance).
Next time she asks, switch it up. "I've been working on managing my money more, and I wanted to help you learn to do the same while also still showing you that I love you through gifting. So, instead of giving you things when you ask, I'm giving you a monthly allowance. Spend it on what you want, but that's all you're getting for the month for things that you don't need."

I don’t agree with wiping out student loan with bankruptcy unless it becomes a critical issue with Health or an accident. Even then, wiping out the interest is an alternative. When couples spend $1000 plus on eating out every month why should we, the taxpayers, pay for their student loans? There are many of us who went to community college, worked full-time through university, went to a city/state college, or didn’t go to college at all because we couldn’t afford it. This is not a political issue. This is a numbers issue. Making this political dumbs down the conversation and we get nowhere.

There are so many US-produced culinary shows and then I watch these shows with regular people and they never cook at home!!! How is this real?! We make probably 5 times more than this couple and have no kids, we cook all the time! We eat out maybe 3-4 times per month and it's specific food that I can't comfortably cook at home, like pho bo or Korean dish with panchan selection. We both work from home and we cook for ourselves all the time! I prep two times a week and we cook occasional additional dishes every day for dinner. This is a crucial skill, I'd die without it, the best food I eat is always my homemade food!
Is this how people are raised here in US? I grew up in different country and moved here when I was 23. Do parents not cook at home and not teach kids how to? But I see so many bloggers cooking delicious homemade meals all the time! What's the reality here?

The USA is so diverse in almost every metric, but I can say it’s not uncommon for some families to rely on fast food, processed foods and connivence foods. It’s often not about cost but often about mental bandwidth and the dopamine hit those foods give people. Those foods are often the only luxury people can afford and they get hooked.
It’s also not unusual to have families that value cooking and teach their kids how to do so.

It's so hard to watch the denial people have about retirement. I'm kind of guilty too, I wasn't contributing nearly enough until recently. If they think it's so hard to cut back a little on restaurants now, how much harder will it be to potentially not even have enough for basic groceries as senior citizens? It's like driving at a brick wall with your eyes closed. Our human psychology is just not well equipped to deal with longterm issues like this. This is why we need to massively beef up social security to force everyone to provide for themselves (and each other). Unfortunately our politics are going the opposite direction and people who didn't plan well, or people who are just poor and unlucky, will literally be on the streets. This is not good!

He has $300/month to spend how he wants- that was pretty much all going to cigars and bourbon before. He could still spend that on cigars and bourbon but would leave him with literally nothing else to spend for the month. I'm not from the US, so all those numbers tend to feel super inflated to me, as salary (but also costs) here tend to be slightly lower.
150k is a really high income to me and it's hard to wrap my head around that people actually manage to make that much and still struggle.

You can cook katsu chicken at home. We do. Many things we used to get at restaurants, we slowly learned to make ourselves overtime. Unless a restaurant is super high quality, or the food is very specialized, our cooking tastes generally the same or better than we used to get. You can do it!

I feel like such a fool. I paid off my student loan. Both my sons paid off theirs. We took out a home equity loan to pay the excess of their college costs not covered by their loans and then, of course, paid off that loan too. To hear that other people drink bourbon and smoke cigars to the tune of $400 a month, eat out nine times a week, and buy" lots of things for their house" while making only minimal payments on their massive student loan obligation along with the comforting knowledge that it will be completely wiped out is very frustrating to me. (Along with Ramit's sympathy to boot!) Our retirement savings would be very different if we had decided it wasn't necessary to honor our financial commitments. It is galling to me that people can spend money on such frivolous things while not having to worry about their student loan debt.

Oh boo-hoo. Every fighter jet the US buys costs over $150M. The government spends ridiculous money on BS like this every day. This woman's loan forgiveness has nothing to do with you. My loans were discharged recently under TPD. Just because you repaid yours doesn't mean everyone has to. It's similar to how my husband and I pay $30K a year in income taxes, but Tesla's US operations pays $0.

@@maryanngrow2970 I don't feel bad that the government doesn't get a 6 figure repayment from my original $30K in student loans. I *can't* work anymore. I also don't think anyone, you included, should have to pay exorbitant amounts for student loans. The high cost of college today is another way to exclude poor people from higher education. Everyone should have an opportunity to go to college without facing financial ruin, if desired. Students aren't cash cows for our frivolously spending government!

I almost had to turn off this episode when Ramit didn't know about Culver's. Culver's is one of the major food groups of the midwest. :-) I wish they had explored her Income Driven Repayment plan for her school loans. In the video they pretty much gloss over it and I don't understand how it is basically viewed as being something to not worry about. It sounds good but IDR can cause problems. It is possible that the amount that is ultimately forgiven is taxed as income. While it seems this is good for her short-term, there could be financial consequences down the line.

There's also a connection between how they choose to spend their money and their health. Eating out 36x a month and I guarantee they have developed high blood pressure and a good start to other related cardiovascular disease. Plus the cigars and alcohol which are impacting CVD and liver health. Suggest starting a routine of taking walks, which are free, multiple days a week, alone or together. Go to parks, also free. Do fun exercise videos at home on YT. Get a physical and lab tests to create a baseline and watch your health improve.

That is so much eating out 3 to 4 times a week $250 /week! If they only go out once a week they can invest $500 to $600 each month.

I feel like Ramit skipped over the tobacco and alcohol spending too quickly. I think that deserved more time to delve into. At that amount, it’s more than just a line item on a budget that can be easily crossed off. There’s probably some level of addiction that needs to be addressed. He may need to taper off his smoking and drinking or even get professional help if not successful.

I think a lot of people underestimate how much they spend in groceries and eating out. I know I did until we started tracking five years ago. Just last month alone we had over 10 days with grocery expenses. Some was our weekly shopping trip, some was our mid-week shopping to restock on fresh fruit, once was protein powder delivered by Amazon and I always grab food from Target a few times a month when there.

59:25 is the face of a man that just learned he needs to work until 70 just to get by in retirement, if and only if they are investing an unreasonable amount of their budget monthly for the rest of their working careers. These people are going to end up destitute unfortunately. It did not have to be this way.
