  • Just for future reference for those of you that may own an Optimax one day or currently do. Very common problem you;ll most likely run in to.

    I was told by a mechanic at Bass Pro - "No need to put motor in break in mode after replacing this."
    He then said just to clean out discharge line and start it up, but be gentle on rpms for a little while because it is a piston.
    I hope he's right. Everyone keeps talking about purging oil line. The mechanic said not needed....

    You should clean the fuel rails also Incase any metal shavings got in them. Better than finding out later.

    Like clockwork mine just went out at 520. Was waiting for it to happen actually glad it did so could finally upgrade to the 2 bearing all black compressor

      geoff Shes in the shop right now to figure out what caused the failure. The guy found some white stuff in the oil tank on the motor so its a suspected oiling issue. The reason it really failed, turned out the warning alarm on the dash quit working so we were unaware of any issues until it was too late.

      Clockwork is right! Mine just went out over the weekend at 530 hrs. Just bought the new style 2 bearing unit as well. My engine is 2006 225 Pro XS

      It happens.. Have fun! If you plan on tackling it yourself it's a pretty easy job, BUT keep in mind:
      If the failure caused any metal shavings through the air lines and your injectors, you're just gonna have problems again. It's best to have the entire system cleaned to be on the safe side.. We ended up doing this, and injector #6 got pretty clogged up. After cleaning, everything was perfect and ready to roll.
      And, you have to go through the oil priming procedure after you're finished. From my knowledge, you need a special machine to do so..
      Lastly, find out what caused the failure. The failure of the one in this video was actually cause by overheating.. Got a sample of the oil in the tank, and found water in it. Nasty, milky water. So we just assumed that was the culprit of the failure. Either way, fix whatever caused it so it don't happen again.. It's either going to be lack of lubrication or poor water flow/cooling.
      Good luck!!! Thanks for watching

    Mine is going out, it’s starting the loud squeak. Turns out there is tiny oil line running into a brass fitting that oils the thing. That fitting broke. Now I’m catching hell trying to find a compressor.

    Did you flush the lines out? And how did you prime the oil back into the compressor

    Besides the high pitch noise, did u have any other issues?
    Did u get loss of power? Boggling at night rpm?

    Did an alarm go off? What did the alarm sound like?

    • @dr.fishing5740
      @dr.fishing5740  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was the culprit.
      Shop looked it over, turns out the alarm system wasn't working without us knowing.. Oil flow got restricted from the compressor and no water was going to it due to a stopped up line.

      If the pulley has play in it, if motor is lacking power, if you hear a loud squeaking sound while running, etc…

      The engine rotates, but it does not work, knowing that the gasoline works and the electricity works

    post a video on the priming process

    • @dr.fishing5740
      @dr.fishing5740  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The boat is at certified Mercury shop. A special machine is used to prime the oil back up into the compressor, and when a compressor failure like this occurs its a good idea to have the air injectors cleaned out.. really it's a better idea to take it to the shop and get it done the right way.

    Did you have to clean the fuel rails or no? My pulley has some wobble and it looks like I'm going to have to replace it as a precaution. I'm praying I can just swap the compressor for $1,000, drink a bunch of whiskey to drown my sorrows and move on. Sad part is I just bought the motor (2007 225) because it looked like it was brand frickin new and claims to have only been used in freshwater, although it's now on my saltwater boat. Compression was good and it ran great. Fired right up after sitting for a year.
    I haven't even gotten the chance to look at it in person since I discovered this looking at the video and knowing what I know now because the boat is 45 mins away.

      No need to clean fuel rails.. just air injectors
      If it hasn't failed yet, you'll be fine. Just replace the compressor alone

      @@dr.fishing5740 Good to know. For what it’s worth I was drinking and actually looking at the tensioner pulley in the video. I guess that does wobble a bit. Going to take a closer look at the compressor today but it’s hopefully ok.
