- It was common for Belgian immigrants to Northeast Wisconsin to speak only Walloon at home and among friends. Generations of their children learned English as a second language and many first learned it when they started school. As late as the 1940’s, children from Walloon homes started school before they could understand or speak English. This video shares firsthand experiences of learning a new language in the days of one-room schools when disciplinary measures were quite different from today.
