      Martin the framing looks really nice. Question are you going to heat the garage? I would suggest you insulate the floor with 2 inch closed cell foam board. And side walls. Small expense now, big returns if you ever plan to heat. Even will help your upstairs living area.

    If that little hickup with the concrete walls being off straight line is everything you complain about, well, than you did an excelent job. Construction adhesive as LQ nails is absolutely perfect on the sections that require more "compactness" =) . Oh, and if I was you, I would certainly do something about bracing on the shear walls, you know, just in case if some lurky winds arise.. One question: Why are you putting on the ssheathing in vertical? Should be better staggered in horizontal.
    Anyway, excelent job, Mr. Martin. Cheers and keep going, soon you'll have a little mansion.. =D

    FYI, a better strengthening of the garage door wall would be accomplished by hanging the osb from the top down allowing it to project its full width onto your headers. It would form two " L" 's at corners and a "T" 's in the center. I never glued walls All my floors were glued and nailed with galvanized or ring shanks. Nothing worse than a sweaky floor!

    Cutting and installing the blocks in advance seems like a good idea but in reality the framing lumber isn’t consistent. You’d end up making adjustments either way.

  • @thelostarchivesserialvault5353
    @thelostarchivesserialvault5353 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also its always a good idea to stagger your joist header boards. You should have spready the garage door header board #2 into 3 sections where 2/3 was cut to be centered from the middle and the other 1/3 was equally split in the remaining side sections. Right now you have a weak section in the middle of your garage door wall. A high wind load on that section could potenially buckle that in.

    Your Shorter wall is acting as a column but called a Jack Wall (Like the short stud holding a header) Some might call it a Knee wall but they normally are shorter and carry the loads from rafters. A Pony wall is a short wall that bear NO LOAD often used to divide a room in a open plan. BTW If your continuous header carry's a significant load it's going to have much greater stresses than two separate headers acting as simple beams. If it's just a gable wall, probably no big deal BUT if your floor joists bear it's an issue if the floor is loaded. (I'm a retired Structural Engineer)

    Shear walls also require a specific nailing pattern. If you search through @mattbangswood on the TH-cam’s he has a video explaining shear and nailing patterns on his recent house build. I personally thought you were going to use a lvl (2) for that garage header. Since you used 2x10 I would have made it three ply with the center ply split over the break on that wall. It looks like you overlapped it some. Now it looks like the center of that header is not bearing on anything so you might need to put a 6x6 post in that wall of more 2x6 to make it a 6x6

    A tip. Sence this will be a garage, with a large opening. Wind bracing can be useful.
    Garage header end down to bottom corner. And similar on the connecting long wall.
    Check. diagonal steel wind bracing
    UPDATE, ofcourse you can put diagonal steel bracing on the inside..just to be clear.
    Diagonal in the corners of your build.

    That's why they call it "As Built". Once the siding goes on the error will go away. For shear walls -- there are engineering formulas and tables -- but for guess engineering adhesives and nailing the perimeter at 2" is the best you can do. Later on after the hold down brackets are installed you can panel the inside of the shear wall with OSB adhisive and 2" nailing schedules.
    You should add a Simpson steel strap to tie the left and right header together in the center.

  • @monicapttrsn

    Yep! I've heard of Shear Walls. They save scores of lives during earthquakes.The blocking of the walls is usually done by the Apprentice Trainee.😌 Had you considered hold-down devices at the garage door openings? One that would work is the Simpson HDU4-SDS2.5. The IRC shows the holdowns in Chapter 6.2.10 for Portal Frame With Hold-down Method (PFH). Also above the holdowns near the top of the wall, you have a Simpson MST-37-type of strap. The reason for the hold-down equipment is to count those walls with large openings as shear walls.

    Too late now, but you should have laid the OSB length wise, now you have a flex joint every 4 feet on the walls, if you had mounted it length wise you would only have one (maybe 2) flex joints (up 4 feet from the bottom/top) along the walls, this makes for a much stronger wall.

  • @lukeb9838
    @lukeb9838 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another great job!! Previous comments are spot on! Separating wall between doors is called a jack wall. Liquid nails is a common practice in some parts of the country, but in my opinion “overkill” when you do a full length header spanning across both doors. Only thing I would do differently would be to fill the header out from inside to outside of the wall cavity and start with a 12’ centered in between both doors then fill the remaining in on both sides, oh and liquid nail the header boards together. Seth has sure grown a lot from the first video!!! Hope all is well with Sara haven’t seen her posting any videos from school for a while. I’m sure she is swamped with school though!! Bless you all and look forward to the next videos

    Wondering why you are installing the OSB vertically. Horizontal would give you more shear value. Check out the IRC code and the information published by the APA regarding the installation of a portal frame at the overhead doors. I would think your state code would have it as well. These frames usually have the header going across the entire width of the structure with a specific sheathing nailing pattern (no glue on the plywood) on both sides of the wall and hold downs from the studs to the foundation. That music by the way can be a bit irritating at times.

    Great programs.Your wife is a "Jewel" and your son has a great attitude. One comment, your 12" garage door opening headers should have run to the corner of the front/side wall so that they would have become an integral part of your shear-wall. I also like that you overthink/overdue so many things recognizing that not being an expert its better to get it perfect now so that you don't fight a problem you created earlier in the project.

    No such thing as trim studs, those are Jack Studs and the stud that Jacks are nailed to in your case are King Studs. FYI the short studs above the headers are called Cripple Studs

    you need to adjust your air nailer as u should not have to come behind and renail the nails.

    Do you need Termite Shields? Reason I ask is to put it on the concrete before the plate on and offset the plate 1/2" to allow for the OSB wall surface to sit on.

    How do you make sure stud spacing out correctly? What is the distance between two stud? Do you measure from the middle of one stud and the next stud? Or from the left side of the first stud to the left side of a second stud
