1986 was the last year my wife and I made the show in Abbotsford. We filmed from the flatbed trailer centre stage and felt so welcomed as part of the media. Wonderful memories of days gone by -- thank you for preserving this footage!
I was a kid when I first saw this video. It was about 1993, I was 13. I remember how proud I got when I saw the brazillian Smoke Flight among the wolrd's best aerobatic teams!! A salute from Brazil!!
My goodness ! I don't even know how I found this ! I remember back in 1988 when my father during a trip to USA, brought this Original VHS Tape. I was 9 at the time. Nowadays I'm a Pilot and have been for 24 years. At this time it was only a dream for me. As a Brazilian I was so proud to watch the "Esquadrilha da Fumaça". Just by watching this now brings me the shivers and memories from my childhood. Cheers from Brazil and thanks for posting it !
I was there for all three days. The best Abbotsford airshow ever. 300,000+ people attended over three days. Friday hi-lites included the SR-71 performance and landing.
I remember watching this when I was a kid! I've forgotten what happened to the VHS and have been looking for it ever since. Thank you for putting this on TH-cam
I touched the SR-71 that weekend, it was awesome! It did a single afterburner flyby, and went straight up, it was fantastic to see it in action! The Antinov was huge!
My favorite was the SR-71, hands down. This brings fond memories back. IIRC, the '86 airshow was a week long rather three days due to Expo '86. The Brits brought in an SST and gave 100 people a free supersonic ride to the winners. Back then, the money available for flight demonstration teams around the world was in greater supply. They used to do quick demo flights around English Bay to promote the airshow in the days before the event. English bay would be full of freighters waiting for moorage to load wheat and the like. Many were Russian. The SR-71 buzzed those freighters after the show, lit 'em up and headed southeast out of Canada. Apparently, it had visual of the Gulf of Mexico in four freaking minutes....!?
The SR-71 can hit top speeds of 2200 mph and an altitude of over 80,000 feet. From that high up, you can see the curvature of the Earth. I don't know how far, but I can see it being possible.

Blue Angels and their A-4F Skyhawk. Snowbirds and their CT-114 Tutor. Frecce Tricolori and their Aermacchi MB339-A/PAN. Esquadrilha Da Fumaca and their EMB 312 Tucano. Patrouille De France and their Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet.
...Patrouille de France and Frecce Tricolori stole the the show for the formation performances. I was positioned just right to get a great shot of Frecce Tricolori in that amazing crossover manoeuvre which unfortunately went wrong two years later at Ramstein. Also got a couple great photos of the group formation.
Patrouille de France for me were especially impressive, and the background music blended seamlessly, I remember seeing them do the grand finale " Fan Burst" above the Eiffel Tower.
My mom gave me a VHS with this on. It’s still my fave video of an air show of all time. I’m still looking for all the music. 😎
