Do you have your own training routine? How do you practice and improve yourself as a helicopter pilot? Let us know!

I like to find a tower. Because I live near Toronto Canada, I like to use the CN tower. I approach the tower slowing to a hover in front of the tower windows. Then I fly sideways around the tower in both directions maintaining the same altitude and always facing the tower. Quite challenging.

@@martinmclean4801 that sounds like a lot of fun too. In which sim do you usually do that?

AUTOROTAIONS and fly patterns, maintain airspeed, maintain 500 ft alt, and approaches, terminate to hover, not a landing, then work on taxi.

One advice I always give to people is know where the wind come from and be nose to the wind at most of the time! While taking of, approaches and to be in hover, if you have the nose to the wind it will be way easier to control the helicopter. I fly most of the time in DCS and this help alot!
    Good Video Sergio!

I happened to end up using a very similar method to learn, and can say that your advice is excellent. I focused on doing a (VERY) rough hover taxi around an airfield, and set ZERO wind. I was all over the place at first, but just took it easy, took it slow, and in a relatively short time I was mostly able to get it done.
For those looking for a really nice place to practice, I can recommend KNQX in the Florida Keys, USA - a looooong chain of very small, flat islands with no tall buildings, and several airports. Visually interesting enough to remain fun, with very little to get in the way of learning to fly :)

Thanks for adding your thoughts and suggesting KNQX. That is a GREAT place indeed!

A word of advise, one may be tempted to try maneuvers and fly as many helicopters you have in hangar, but that will only make learning curve to be farther steep. Add to you routine list to keep practising as many sessions as you can with the very same helicopter, then and only when you feel comfortable with that, switch to other model, and there are two approaches to mastering heicopters, from the hevier to the lighter and the opposite. In my personal experience I felt more comfy starting with the heavier ones then switching to the lighter. My humble 2 cents. And Sergio, keep on going with this spuerb stuf!

Indeed, Juan! Reducing all variables helps a TON. You won't have to be constantly chasing all the different little things on several different helicopters!
Thank you very much for adding your input and your kind words!

Hey Sergio. What a good instructing video, pointing out all important: a good and high-fps setup without any disturbing scenery to train muscle memory.
Never tried those exercises but for sure I will do.
Thanks for heads up to this challenge (s)

Hello Stephan. Thank you. You are too kind.
I am glad you find it helpful and I hope these exercises will help you. I can tell you they help me A LOT, not only when I was starting, to get my skills a bit higher, but I STILL do them nowadays just to keep proeficient or to try a new helicopter, for example. It's a great way to get familiar with an airframe we have never flown before.

Could you give us a Video on how to setup X-Plane 11 for Helicopter Flights and what the recommended Helicopter to use.

    • @HeliSimmer
      @HeliSimmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey Frank! I know I already replied on Facebook but is there anything in particular that you have doubts with? Axis assignment, for example? Because, to be very honest with you, I don't do a lot in X-Plane to set it up. I assign axis and that's pretty much it. Although there is a tip that some may not know about. Mmmm... This could be good for a Quick Stop video! 🤔
