Thank you so much for putting this together, found you in a Reddit thread. Just did a week in NYC and could of used something like this. Timing is perfect, going to Tokyo this weekend and cant wait to check out your recommendations
Thanks mate, planning a 5 day hunt in Oct 24 so your doc will help tremendously. I started doing up a map for myself, looks like I need to start again. Thanks again, subscribed ✌
OMG thank you SO much for this - booked our first ever Japan trip in April 2025 and will be painstakingly adding all of these to a bespoke Google Maps shareable list! I will share once done so I can pay it forward. Arigato Gozaimasu!
This is Record Shop Holy Grail in making. So far this trip I have picked up a Southern All Stars LP for ¥300. CD purchases include Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion II for ¥500 and The Spaghetti Incident? for ¥300. Also DJ Shadow Q-Bert remix CD for ¥620 and two Ryuichi Sakamoto for ¥300 each. All wonderful condition as per Japan.
I love some math rock Japanese's bands and would assume they are hard to get due to the bands being quite underground. Although I am going in February and wonder how hard it was to communicate what you are looking for ?
Not hard at all - most Japanese learn English for many years in school, then never speak it again. But if you are clear and patient in your speech, most Japanese retail workers can pick up simple English questions about the product they sell. don't be shy to use the many free apps on phones now too - either let it speak your questions for you, or show them the kanji on screen. Good luck!
Look, quite a few but I'm not really into CD's so much, so didn't concentrate the list on them. I'm afraid you'd need to either visit, or do a little research online yourself before the visit. The great thing about doing the search, even in Japanese, is that 'CD' is a universal term so that might make it a little easier. Start with this search : www.google.com.au/search?q=%E9%83%BD%E5%86%85CD%E5%B0%82%E9%96%80%E5%BA%97 and then turn on translate for the English info.
Thrift stores - not really. Great for fashion (if you are a small size), but rarely any records. The few thrifty-type stores I have found that may have some, are listed in the guide, and tend to be further out along the main train lines from Tokyo central.

Thank you so much,
Do you have shops specifically for hip hop records that are not that far apart? I'm only in Tokyo for a very short time.
Been years since I've been in Tokyo my friend - good luck on the hunt!
THANKS!!!
You're welcome!
Merci beaucoup.
Merci beaucoup, but I can't take all the credit - my cat does most of the editing!
