Fun Fact: Chocolate can't get moldy. The ability for mold to grow is tied to moisture content which, typically, chocolate has very little of. Chocolate, even months or years old, is still safe to eat. The more cocoa in the chocolate, the longer it will retain its flavor. Once a chocolate bar is roughly 60-80% cocoa you'll see longevity of flavor between 2-3 years (most mass produced candy/chocolate does NOT have a lot of cocoa in it, and is diluted with milk, sugar, and other additives that effect its shelf life). Likewise, even if chocolate that's lost is flavor due to time is still entirely safe to eat. So, really, of all the things in this film it's actually entirely plausible that Wonka Mom's chocolate bar was perfectly edible.
@@Nova11435 it does, if it is quality chocolate. It would look like a layer of butter, after a couple of years, and would go rancid if it has suggar. But not moldy.

He goes into depression over it and closes the factory to travel the world where he finds the oompa loompas who are willing to work for cocoa beans and live in the factory where they will be safe from jungle predators that like to eat them. And that's about all the backstory we get on Wonka's backstory.

5:25 The Phoebus cartel was an international cartel that controlled the manufacture and sale of incandescent light bulbs in much of Europe and North America between 1925-1939. The cartel took over market territories and lowered the useful life of such bulbs, which is commonly cited as an example of planned obsolescence. Corporations based in Europe and the United States, including Tungsram, Osram, General Electric, Associated Electrical Industries, and Philips, incorporated the cartel on January 15, 1925 in Geneva, as Phœbus S.A. Compagnie Industrielle pour le Développement de l'Éclairage (French for "Phoebus plc Industrial Company for the Development of Lighting"). Although the group had intended the cartel to last for thirty years (1925 to 1955), it ceased operations in 1939 with the outbreak of World War II. Following its dissolution, light bulbs continued to be sold at the 1,000-hour life standardized by the cartel.
The reason for the 1000 standard hours is because as it turned out it’s the most efficient in terms light and life for standard bulbs. You can make it last longer but the light becomes less effective, or you can make them brighter but the life is shorter. So it is an example of planned obsolescence but for mostly practical reasons
