One of the things I love about this series is that all those responsible for the events get mentioned or appear. Pan Zhang and Ma Zhong for example were a big part of Wu's attack and it's just nice to see even if it's only for a second.
Wish liu Bei didn't let his emotion for Guan Yu's death clout his judgment. I personally somewhat agree with Liu Bei that Jing province should be retaken first. If I was Zhuge Liang I would have go along and help Liu Bei formulate a plan to beat Wu instead of trying to persuade him.
Yeah I’m not sure why Zhuge Liang didn’t just switch to trying to come up with the best way to destroy Wu, since clearly they had the power to do so. With Wu defeated Wei could have been easily taken
Maybe because Liu Bei emptied most of the city garrisons in Shu to go to war, by this, Wei could find It a good oportunity to attack Hanzhong and Yi, even if they have Ma Chao, Wei Yan and Zhao Yun on the back, Shu shouldnt have more than 200000 to guard the two river lands, and so, as a matter of precaution, they left Zhuge Liang to guard Yi with Zilong and so intimidate the Wei forces. I think this was the plan of Shu
The Liu Bei faction was considered outsiders to the native people of Yi (Liu Bei took Yi by force). Therefore Shu is filled with internal rivalries, especially from the nobles families of Yi who were force to support the war effort. Zhuge Liang was pretty much against invading Wu because his primary strategy was to ally with Wu to contend with Wei. After the tragic death of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei the Shu kingdom still had no shortage of warriors (Zhao Yun, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong etc) but seriously lacked talented administrators who could effectively manage the internal affairs of Yi. Thus he had to stay home to keep an eye on things. Another reason for Zhuge Liang not to join the Wu expedition is to keep check on Wei. In all, Zhuge Liang was a brilliant strategist/ministrer but not a field commander (he made several mistakes but Romance of the Three Kingdom pretty much exaggerated his role in the wars).
Shu was actually the most difficult of the Three Kingdoms to rule. Wei was by far the most populous with well over half of the Han empire's population residing within its territory. Wu had the strongest economy. Shu was landlocked, surrounded by hostile tribes, and wasn't located near major trade routes. Indeed it is a testament to Zhuge Liang's genius that Shu was able to survive at all... let alone almost successfully conquer Wei
