just returned from a holday on the IOW and having witnessed a fire at the grand started looking in to some of the history. It is sad how the island has changed over the last 40 years - my first visit being in the summer of 1981. We visited the gardens but knew nothing of these tunnels, which are hidden gems. Something has gone badly wrong on that island, I can't help thinking the cost of a ferry trip being exactly the same as a return flight to sunny Tenerife for 2 people is a contributary factor. Love your vids, so informative, keep up the good work.

Years ago you could make out the position of the hospital end of the tunnel, there stood a grey wall as I recall, and you could see an outline of a door... the tunnel ran underneath the old children's playground.. I grew up in St Lawrence and we would walk the dog in the botanical gardens.... fascinating to see what is behind that wall...

I worked at the hospital for T.B. Patients from 1953 to 1955 had a very happy2 years there living in the nurses home . The underground tunnel was a great way for us to go on duty in bad weather or just if we wanted a short cut to the hospital. The hospital itself was an old building but a very active place when I was nursing there . What is now the botanic gardens was then the gardens to the hospital and the patients as they were getting better enjoyed taking walks in them and I remember even in those days we used to have games of bingo when the patients who were still on bed rest could join in we nurses would stand outside the patients rooms and if anybody won we would be able to let the person in charge know. Those were happy days for us nurses and the patients even with their diagnoses of T.B. Were generally a cheerful lot of patients.😊

I've heard that there is a secret tunnel from Osborne house to the forge in whippingham. I think it was an express route because horse shoes and bits etc were made there. Maybe you would be able find a way in?

I know of a tunnel from Albert cottage (not been in it yet), I’ll have to do a bit of research, see what I can find, thanks for the heads up 😁👍

Yeah there’s tons of tunnels in Osborne for the mades to go through so they wouldn’t be seen by the queen or any guests as it was seen as unprofessional, a woman at my church used to work there and was a made there and so were her ansesters but she doesn’t talk much about the tunnels but I’ll ask her and seee if I could get some more info, it’ll be well cool if you could exospore some of them and see if they were used for other things too xx
