Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story

  • We live in an environment steeped in chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process. When it comes to toxins one plus one does not equal two. There is a compounded effect. Chronic toxicity can wreak havoc on our health and result in symptoms ranging from fatigue to sleep and skin issues. It can also be related to autoimmune issues, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, autism, and many other conditions. Unfortunately, conventional medicine rarely examines the role of toxic load when it comes to treating these conditions.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to assessing a patient's toxic load and supporting the body to detoxify and reduce high levels of heavy metals. They also share their personal experiences treating patients in this area.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

I am at a loss, so I thought I'd throw this out there. I have had 3 Zinc RBC tests done at quest diagnostics since last June, and the results ranged from 21.81 to 22.76 (9.0 - 14.7). The doctor who ordered the tests doesn't know why my result is so high, and my PCP and Hemoncologist (I have idiopathic chronic aplastic anemia) can't interpret it either. Why is there a test that no one can interpret? My PCP ordered serum zinc and copper through the hospital and the results were zinc 67 (60 - 106) and copper 107 (77-206). I asked for a plasma zinc test, which was 65 (60 - 130). I am aware of the relationship between zinc and copper, so i asked for a Copper RBC test and the result was within normal range at 0.59 (0.53 - 0.91). The serum copper/zinc ratio is 1.59, which I understand to be unfavorable, but the opposite scenario exists intracellularly. Should I be worried about the Zince RBC level? Can you help me find a way to interpret these results?

EVERYTHING got worse. It took about 3 weeks for the detox to get really bad. But after 3 months all my issues began to slowly VANISH. I mean everything has stopped. I had a so many symptoms over the years I thought were "normal aging", that got pretty severe by age 36 which have all vanished. GET THAT GARBAGE OUT OF YOUR MOUTH AND CHELATE. "looking for toxic metals in the blood is like looking for earthworms in the air" said a physician who read and interpreted the results of a "pushed"
urine test. Metals detectable in blood are from very recent exposure or indicative of very high contamination even if reading at acceptable " range" level .
The body is very aggravated by them and tucks them away.
Mercury has an affinity with molecules of nervous system tissues hence psychological symptoms. My state doesnt have a lab that can run the urine tests.
Try Doctors Data Lab ( midwest)
for a home collection kit and try to find a functional medicine doctor well practiced with chelation.
Most primary care general physicians arent specifically trained to read labs in the depth you require
and will just go off the "range"
      which varies ALOT by lab.
Cleanse liver and colon prior to
      chelation to clear pathway out
      for those nasty metals

@@PARROT22HEAD When my friends & family have had knee replacement, it was with titanium. Which it's my understanding isn't an issue. Lead & mercury, etc. are more able to breakdown, migrate. Like the public being completely lied to about the safety of "teflon", or aluminum being allowed to be sold as "cookware". There's a lot of info. online, I would do some research & check with Dr. in the know. As they said... it's all individual. Well being!

If not, while you're looking you might want to get an intracellular nutrition and antioxidant test and get your body what it needs to be ready to do something like chelation if you need it. (Good to get body in order anyway.) Then take reduced liposomal glutathione. Over time you'll at least be moving in the right direction while figuring out the doctor thing

He got defensive & said he wasn’t concerned about the lead, arsenic, & cadmium levels. He did believe the thyroid & adrenal counts. At least he decided to do some bloodwork & urinalysis. I’m waiting for the results now. I will not be surprised if it comes back negative because I have been to 5 gynaecologists & every one of them said my hormones were normal.

My name is Mikaela and I'm in desperate need of help for my partner Brandon. He's been so unwell since 2015, is 31yo, and is getting worse.
High ck, muscle twitches, pain in back and hips, constant need for cracking joints, brain fog, suicidal, constant pain and swelling of muscles, unable to do any physical activity. Have been told mercury, lead, myotoxins, low Zink/vitD, gene testing ruled out known genetic disorders. Moved out of mouldy home 2 years ago, no improvement. Eating as per your recommendations, organic, grass fed, whole foods. Tried IV vitamins, IR sauna for 1+ year. Nothing that he's tried has made him feel any better.
Any service or dr we see just want to give pills and charge a fortune, or just get us out of there, without seeing any improvement!
Please help, I'm begging for answers

I had all my hair falling out was very stressed mentally and got sick with multiple viruses and it was all linked back to heavy metals and adrenal fatigue because my body couldn’t fight the chronic infections anymore because infections love heavy metals! I almost died actually from this. Lost so much weight, became severely mentally I’ll to the point of having brain inflammation, it was messed up. But i started detoxing with glutathione and zeolites and i am so much better now one month in! Hope this helps. Reduced glutathione is what i took at mega doses under guidance of an alternative practitioner and my poisoning started to go away.

I also have lost alot of hair this 5 years i been sick i thought it only was from the candida infection in my stomach but no it is from the heavy metals and stress no absorption of nutrient bc of weak adrenals . Now Im cleansing im taking NAC , MSM , CHLORELLA, and have ordered zeloite . I had most aluminium, zirconium, titanium most of them comes from make up stuf have throw alot of the make up ! I lost maybe 20 kg from 2019 til now and lost alot of hair. I have tried so many diets to get rid of candida but nothing worked ! U cant get rid of infections when u have heavy metals and weak organs you just get more weak and sick . Thank God he guided me in this journey God bless you all who suffered like me its terrible to be that sick.

This is really helpful information. The only thing I’m really surprised to hear is the misinformation that we need meat in order to get enough protein. The hospitals are not filled with vegetarians and vegans who are protein deficient, in fact hospitals are not full of anyone with protein deficiency. This was a marketing ploy started in the 1950s by the meat and dairy industries to make people think that they needed to eat meat and dairy to get enough protein. And it’s the thing makes non-meat eaters either laugh or shake their heads in frustration because it’s the first question that they are asked. It’s been proven in so many clinical studies now that there are ample sources of protein in a high-quality plant based diet, and that the dangers of cancer, heart disease and other chronic conditions are brought about chiefly by people eating meat and dairy. I really wish you would do more research on this and consider changing your mind on that score.

@@Jay-yy7uk you are talking to a vegan who cooks everything from scratch and doesnt eat vegan junk food. It sounds like you are ignorant of what dyslexia is. I excel in math and music and even tried composing music when I was younger but read from right to left. I have a very high level of concentration and excel in business but often write Ps and Bs backwards and would fail as a lawyer. Ask me to turn right and I turn left. That said there is a lot to dyslexia that I would consider positive. You should read "dyslexia, the gift." Many opera singers, self made millionaires and even presidents such as thomas jefferson were or are dyslexic. It's absolutely not something you cure just as you dont "cure" lefthandedness. That said when you are dyslexic, you need a high degree of concentration and being careful about diet can help in that respect.

    • @elisemiller13

@M.Pixley Dyslexia definitely doesn't mean low IQ that's an ignorant stance born of poor information from another some years back. Unfortunately, so many have been treated as if they were "slow" or even heard stories of being put in schools for those with "retardation". (sorry, I don't know the PC terms, no disrespect to anyone) In fact I had a friend long ago that worked at a school for those with dyslexia. Most of these kids were genius or close to genius IQ! This is unfortunately what happens when humans aren't treated as individuals, but as "average", "normal" and then the rest of us. It's convenient with a large population....for the bureaucracy, I suppose. Never mind that it messes up people's lives. I believe there is such richness society robs people of in terms of creative thinking styles. Most of us don't do well (and shouldn't have to ) to "fit in" to boxes and "norms".
