That was filled with absolute gold!!! What Ali said about recharging and how we revert to habits when we are at low energy stages has really stuck with me. I’m really stuck in productivity purgatory at the minute so this has come at the perfect time! Been chasing my goals so much over the past year I feel I’m constantly cycling through bursts of motivation and then the inevitable burnout. Hats off mate! Hope you’re well!!
When I first came across Ali's videos I was amazed by how much he does and how productive he was. That's why I subscribed to his channel. Seeing his development and the growth of his channel was so nice to see. This interview showed how he managed to do that. Thanks a lot!
This is exactly how I felt when I came across his channel couple years ago. He’s really smart! Couldn’t believe how much he was making off TH-cam too when he broke it down
This was one of the most enjoyable podcasts to listen to/watch in a long time. Chris and Ali feel very genuine and authentic, and I appreciate their willingness to admit areas where they are still working toward something, rather than making it seem like they “have everything together.” I continuously struggle with productivity, executive function, etc. I am more of the creative housemate that Chris mentioned. 😅 It was an easy conversation to listen to because there was the nice friend vibe that you could feel through the screen, some light, friendly jokes and jabs, and helpfully structured questioning from Chris, as always. Can’t wait to read the book and (hopefully) implement some of the ideas to improve focus and moving forward in certain areas of life. Thanks for this uplifting, helpful content, guys!
I can't believe two of my favourite people on the internet are talking on your pod (which btw is becoming an obsession of mine). Thank you to you both ❤
Rushing is another form of going nowhere. I believe I read that in that book 30 Days to Overcome Procrastination by Corin Devaso. In essence, speeding up and "getting things done no matter what" doesn't help with procrastination. Slowing down and focusing on the reason for the task and establishing a well intended meaning is what helps a ton. Mindfulness helps big time.
To a degree I think I didn’t want to believe the thesis of “feeling better makes you more productive” but when I analyze my most productive times, it checks out.
@Chris You are sooo good at stepping into the audience's perspective. I love you for this: "If you're the sort of person that can listen to me and you waffle on for a couple of hours about productivity you probably care about the outcomes that you're getting in your life which means that you might apply due or undue pressure to the outcomes that you're going to get." 26:32 Keep up the great work!
I saw this on my TH-cam main page and thought I should watch it at some point, so I made a positive decision to procrastinate about something, and watch this to pass the time.
Two of my favourite guys sitting down and having delightful, uplifting and inspirational conversation. I love it. Thank you guys as usuall I’m leaving feeling good and ready to be productive and apply gained knowledge in my day to day life.
Chris definitely influences my thinking, and more importantly my reading habits, more than anyone else for the last several years, but I also definitely began watching and continue to watch because he's a hunk. Love you bro.
Ali not knowing what 'ambient' means in this context makes me realise he's a normal human just like me 😂 love you both and stoked to see this collab 💞 book on order!
when you're burnt out, this mindset shift of just 'switching around in your head' is too vague and unhelpful. If you genuinely feel that the work you do is meaningless, no reframe in your head will change that feeling. it just feels like you're lying to yourself and it doesn't stick because it isn't believable.
Well that depends sometimes it’s work you want to do and/or have to. Now being burnt out sucks obviously, but you can find fun or that thing you enjoyed in said task by looking at it and thinking of it differently. That’s why they say take a break and look at it with fresh eyes, now this is different but doing the same thing over and over again from the same perspective does get repetitive and monotonous. So whilst I agree sometimes you should ‘question the diagnosis if the treatment isn’t working’ sometimes you just have look at it differently to spark something within the task.
Such a great podcast all around! Definitely the collab I didn't know I needed. Keep up the great work! "The point of the destination is to give us a direction"
I get the trainer thing. I've learned a lot of languages, and people sometimes would say to me, "Why don't you just learn on your own? Why have a teacher?" And I have done that, but I find if I pay for a class and have a teacher who is expecting me to have learned the material (I tend to do one-on-one classes as well, so it's all me... no other students to hide behind), then I feel accountable to the teacher (and to the money I've spent, honestly, haha), so I tend to work harder by the time I'm due for class again.
One of if not the best podcasts on TH-cam!🎉 Just a thought, love all the business based content and in that specific way I'm rather "rightwinged" myself although I do not like the term. However, there are loads of extremely talented and intelligent "leftwinged" TH-camrs like Hbomberguy, PhilosophyTube and Contrapoints and I think it would be such a fantastic crossover to have such TH-camrs on your show from time to time as well!❤ Who knows, maybe it could even be a step in the direction of deradicalization😅 In general I see so many wonderful people on both side of this "artificial" divide we call politics and I think it would be lovely to have more goodfaith conversations between members of the different political groups❤
Gosh I totally agree. It's wonderful to hear genuine discussion from differing perspectives that isn't underpinned by malice or point scoring. Just what debate used to be, fleshing out ideas.
I have a question to ask the doctor on this podcast. Do you cook and clean (7days a week)while working as a doctor? I am genuinely curious if you have those responsibilities,in addition,to your hectic work schedule. Do you pack your lunches for work, wash everything(laundry, dishes, bathroom, kitchen, ect )and cook your meals? 😊 😅
Okay so! Right when he said that creativity is linked with positive emotions. While that is true, positivity does leads to creativity but I won't completely concur with the idea that negative emotions doesn't lead to creativity. Throughout history we have seen creatives come up with something magnificent when they're going through a negative emotion phase of their life. I will like to hear some discussion around this.
My job is writing. I used to love it and now I can't enjoy it. If it is not a job like there is a boss that have to contact you when you are done with your task, then I think I can enjoy it. It is the heavy loads and all the instuctions that makes it less enjoyable. What I do to forget or get my dopamine is I will spend my limited time in a day to do gardening and cooking.
I feel like the high stakes of my job is far and away what makes it an awful position. Part of that is just being new and constantly feeling like im behind. Which I 100% am but there doesn't ever feel like a moment where I can come up for air or when those moments do appear I just have to crash at my desk for my own mental sanity.
I am an artist and I get to paint for a living. I am also starting something new by starting a TH-cam Channel. In the beginning of any Endeavor the workload and learning curve are very Steep and distraction lurks everywhere disguised as knowledge to be gained. I love the idea of teaching people to paint (perhaps I can have Ed Sheeran take some lessons). 😂 I am thoroughly enjoying this episode yet find myself drawn to the brush!
33:50 this honestly feels like the current paradox. I believe it shouldn't be about feeling good as the time, because then we won't even know what feels good without the challenge. I believe it's a balance and a dance of the two. Doing things we don't want to do builds a specific part of the brain that then allows us to do more hard things, so it's important. But I think it's more about how we do the the things, I believe if we are present even those things we can find a kind of peace even in the most challenging things. Well that's my take anyway.
Is it okay to slow down when you’re a senior citizen? I don’t procrastinate. I simply want to slow down in my “Golden Years”. Some people will never slow down, and good for them. I’m still employed. I enjoy working past retirement age. We don’t need the money. I’m defending myself for slowing down, even though I’m still employed as a senior citizen. 🙄
Just one slight thing about "the journey is the destination," mostly on board, but I don't think you can overlook the execution part. I have traveled to some places that are not easy to travel to, require some preparation, let's say, and I agree that researching everything and getting ready was the majority of the fun, but I didn't get there and think, "Meh, next thing." I executed the plan, which is also something. I don't think you can overlook the friggin execution stage of your plan! That bit is a little overthought here.
Can you do a podcast together with Alex and Ali? That would be so interesting, l feel like Alex would have a lot to say lol. And would be interesting to see what Ali would have responded. Basically a debate od sort.
15:02 I find that a very similar issue (to monitizing your passions) with my university work. When I study ‘medicine’ at home I really enjoy the work but at university in the lectures I find it a difficult task to stay locked into the content ect. Iv found this exact same thing for many years now with a lot of my endeavours and I’m yet to realise why that is.
Quite a bit of what he describes under the “approach work as play” heading is dopamine stacking. Professor Andrew Huberman warns against this, saying it undermines motivation for any given task on its own.
Reducing pressure on outcomes is a great observation. I realized rhat the modt fun ive had as a doftware engineer is when were grtting stiff done and screwing up isn't that big if a deal. We always had more fun and had more laughs as a team. It also let us have more fun during thr actual programming. I'll have to keep this in mind for the future whenever I seek a new job.

Out of all the audiobooks clocked in this month and podcasts- this was extremely helpful thank you ❤

This is a refreshing change from the dude bro discipline mindset. I think it's useful but definitely favors the outliers. Normies need motivation too!

But if I don't procrastinate, how would podcasters make a living? Does nobody think of the poor podcasters?
Why not make a use of your free time
I'll watch this later

The amount I relate to this podcast is genuinely scary, it feels like it’s been almost tailored 😂👍🏼
This is brilliant guys ❤

You can actually register what Ali is saying when you set the playback speed to .75 and he still seems like he’s talking fast! Crazy
I'm watching on double speed 😂

So fun to watch two Brits with different personalities, but still very similar values ❤
