If we are going strictly Western music, the previous periods (at least with some semblance of recorded sheet music) are those of the Greek and Roman empires. That's as far back as historians have gone in finding written music, if we are only sticking to the terms and eras regarding Western Classical music, as you and I both have been doing.
Let me put it simply for your uneducated mind. Modern is in reference to a music era. Renaissance: c.1450-c.1600 Baroque: c.1600-c.1750 Classical: c.1750-c.1820 Romantic: c.1820-c.1910 Modern: c.1910-c.1970 Postmodern: c.1970-present day

I sang this in school 23 years ago. it still gives me chills. This performance is virtually perfect. But better with a full choir.

Especially the upper two voices who's vibrato less tone is clear and blends well.
