Even as a 'Monkees' fan who grew up with their show it's hard to argue for them in that regard as they never played or wrote any of their major songs. Still some good songs though.

Pleaseee pleaseee pleaseee Monkees fans stop saying this: they are BETTER than the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!! In a better sense they overshadow it: they have a fanbase that FAR overshadow it - goinging back GENERATIONS and like this dear lady - STILL GROWING!!! I need you all you understand this - Please! They have something that thing can NEVER give them!

@@exclamationpointman3852 Yeh the Monkees wear their constant rejection from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame like a badge. Like okay, up yours then....there were lots of other acts where bands/singers [the Byrds early on, The Mamas and the Papas, the Beach boys, Sonny and Cher] did not play on their own instruments on the recordings...we fought the fat cats and eventually did out of integrity ....set a standard for the future by doing so for others...so the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can take a flying leap you know where....

The Monkees actually outsold The Beatles at the height of their popularity. Michael Nesmith was also as accomplished songwriter writing for Linda Ronstadt a big hit "A Different Drum" and later after the group broke up his own hit "Joann."

    • @johnr.8275
      @johnr.8275 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yup, and the producers of the show wouldn't let them do "Different Drum" because they didn't think it was worthwhile. There is an episode when Mike is sitting and strumming an acoustic, playing a super-fast version of it.

When the show was first put together, Micky was the first one hired. They needed to get an album together quick. so Micky sang on many of their first songs. Later on Davey turned into the major love interest, so he was given many of the later love songs. (He was a song & dance man from England). Coming from Texas, Mike brought a lot of C&W style songs to the group. Peter was given an odd (usually a comic) song here and there.
Also nobody wanted to be hidden in the back behind the drum kit, but eventually Micky said he'd do it.

Up until the early 80s, save for the random exception, 80 percent of songs were about 2 minutes, 19 percent less than three minutes, 1 percent longer than three minutes, because time is money on the radio. Songs didn't make money for the radio station but ads did. A separate issue of course was the payola, pay to play scandals of the 50s and 60s... alternatively, the practice was later used at small concert venues, along Sunset Strip, where bands had to pay the venue to perform. Bands would promote themselves around the club scene concert - goers and hope they'd draw a big enough crowd to make their money back and or get seen by a record company and get a deal. This was the practice of many big hair bands until they "made it." On a side note...the Monkees we're not the first group to sing as part of a television show. That distinction may belong to Ricky Nelson. He played a version of himself on the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet show. He was a very gawky, funny kid but when he was becoming a handsome young man, he was playing guitar and starting singing a song, usually near the end of the show that somehow was worked into the story line. Just a couple years after Elvis Presley's fame hit, Nelson became ridiculously huge...he was the first weekly visible "teen idol" performing on a television show.

Some interesting "Monkees" facts, Michael Nesmith... (the one in the hat) was one of the creators of MTV. Jimmy Hendrix was once the opening act for one of their concerts. And Charles Manson originally auditioned for a part in the band... ( Yes that Charles Manson).

They're making each laugh during this whole thing while trying to keep a straight face...there was some kind of joke going on during the filming. Wool Hat Mike Nesmith just passed away Dec. 10, 2021 at this writing. I am sad, I lived through this era, I am a musician. Mike once described how they went from a TV show band, not a real band, into a REAL BAND, as like Pinocchio becoming a real boy. Mike basically led the protest and led the way for the Monkees on that issue. [Look it up - Pinocchio was an animated Disney Movie from way back about 1940 taken from a story]. Mike had just finished touring with the remaining Monkee, drummer Micky Dolenze...they called it heir farewell tour...i guess they weren't kidding...Mike was in bad health and pulled it off....God bless him.

So you heard three of them sing lead so far. If you would like to hear the fourth (Peter) then I would like to make a few suggestions. To get good sample of his voice then I would suggest either "Do I Have to Do This All Over Again?" (from the album "Head") or "Shades of Gray" where he sings the second verse. It would also be hilarious to see your reaction to "Your Auntie Grizelda" Not his best vocals here though due to he is mostly just clowning around. The song is not what you would probably expect from them based on what usually made it on the radio.

I love watching your reaction to the vids. So fun. Try "Last Train To Clarksville", "I'm A Believer", "Daydream Believer"

You've heard all three, but you still haven't reacted to their bigger hits.

Exactly what I was thinking! Mary, Mary was probably just as popular as their "Big" hits, but the last two she reacted to are not exactly chart toppers.

I love the deeper cuts. The hits are too fucked-out.

One of my top fave Monkees tune, written I believe, by Michael Nesmith, the one with the green cap and lead singer on this tune. I had a major crush on Peter, the blond.
They had a weekly TV comedy series that I watched faithfully in jr. high.
Here’s something completely different (by the Jones Girls).

Oooh! Could you PLEASE react to The Allman Brothers Band? I think you'd really like them. Check out "Not My Cross to Bear", "Whipping Post", and "One Way Out". Thanks!

I really think you should listen to something from the “Pool It!” album and the “Justus” album. I recommend “heart and soul” for Pool It! and “regional girl” for Justus.
