    That 60 dollar armor stopping the 500mag after already being shot multiple times was really impressive. Seems like actually really decent soft armor

    I DO NOT recommend Steel Plates (even with antispall coating) you still run the risk of spalling and fragmentation into you or your partners arms, throat, and face.
    I speak from shitty experiences.
    Ceramic, Polyethylene, or Variable Ceramic Polyethylene will run you just as good, and it’s lighter.
    Trick of the trade is run soft armor under your kit rated for (3A or 3 Plus), and wear plates over the soft armor within your kit (rated for Level 4). It’ll mitigate some of the trauma, and anyone facing you will have two armor systems to go through, make sure to tape everything down that’s loose fitting.

      Yeah, Hard over Soft is something that has been known since antiquity. The hard armor blunted the sharp arrows and such, letting the soft armor underneath soften the impact without being cut through. Probably similiar to today with bullets.

    Love this! I hope in the future when you can afford to, you go all mythbusters on this. Bringing in a science/engineering focused person to help create tests that show just how much force the "person" wearing the armor is feeling and with slow-mo cams show how the force is transferred. That would be so awesome. Basically, you need to add a nerd to your team ;P

    Seen some discussion across forums about a potential of metallic foam sandwiched between two soft ballistic plates. The foam deforms upon impact and eats some of the energy while the plate prevents the bullet from entering the body.

    Great video guys, as always. Can you guys also talk about millspec plates and how they compare to civilian plates? I tend to think that anything not ceramic is lacking, but I have a friend who works at a body armor manufacturer (Spartan Armor Systems) who told me stuff like modern plastic plates like polyethylene and other composites are perfect for civilian application as they're light and will stop any round you would ever face as a civilian.
    As for me, if I were running plates for some reason, I'd still prefer my trusty ceramic plates, which have saved my life at least once from an AK round (7.62x39mm).

    • @deejay1534
      @deejay1534 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      UHWMPE is typically used in helmets. The ACH and ECH are made from it, as well as helmets from companies like Ops-Core/Gentex, Team Wendy, and MTEK. Actual UHWMPE plates, GOOD ones that is from companies like First Spear, are rated to level 3 and are incredibly light, as well as being neutrally buoyant making them excellent for maritime ops. UHWMPE plates as a whole do NOT stop AP or steel-core "barrier blind" rounds in their current development, which makes unsafe for military use, but unless you're expecting AP rounds in the civillian world they're a good choice.

    • @MisterNi
      @MisterNi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deejay1534 Good info. I don't mind helmets being made from bulletproof composites and/or polyethylene as taking a rifle round to the head is going to cause you problems whether the helmet stops the bullet or not. I have also heard of UHWMPE plates being buoyant, which yes would make them a good choice for maritime operations. For civilian use, a polyethylene plate sandwiched with other materials is likely going to be more than good enough, while still being much lighter than ceramic. It's simply in a military context, the bad guys, and even some of the good guys, are almost certainly going to be carrying AKM/AK-47s shooting some old and cheap Soviet era steel core ammo. Wearing Level IV plates is just added peace of mind within that context.

    the steel plate would've been kool to see it shot near the neck to further evaluate the spalling dangers in regards to the neck. There should be a follow up to this in which you see how many rounds it takes to penetrate lethally

  • @Jon-ld3jl
    @Jon-ld3jl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @pakman184
      @pakman184 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never go steel, on top of being substantially heavier it fails to protect against higher threats and the rounds it does stop generate fragmentation. That frag will tear into your arms, groin, and throat. Plates advertised with "Spall coating" are a gimmick and do not hold up.
