Yes, Tsurumi is definitely the most creepy place in Genshin. I remember I explored it during night and subconsciously watched over my shoulder as I played. The atmosphere and story of that island is very dark

Rough breakdown of Ruu's Story (some minor alterations and theorising in the comments) :
    - Long ago, an ancient civilisation resided over Tsurumi island's underground cities, and they seemingly worshipped some kind of moon, or eclipse, shown in their murals.
    - This was later destroyed by celestia, with only the ruins remaining
    - Later on, the Thunderbird started living on the island, travelling between Tsurumi and Seirai
    - Centuries later, new humans begun living on Tsurumi, and something fell to the island from the sky, covering it in an eternal fog. The Thunderbird was aware of this happening, but did nothing
    - The humans thought it was the Thunderbird trying to protect them from outside influence, and started hosting ceremonies and sacrifices to please the bird, believing it will continue to protect them if they continue doing so.
    - But to the Thunderbird, the humans and the animals of the island were no different. It never particularly cared for the humans or any other beings
    - It was commong practise for somebody to sing during the human's ceremonies, and many centuries later, a young boy named Ruu was selected to sing. He was embarassed, so went far away to practise his singing. The thunderbird noticed him, and was please by his voice. Ruu gave her a name, Kanna Kapatcir, and he told his tribe about this meeting.
    - His tribe then made the decision to sacrifice Ruu, believing that this would please the Thunderbird further, to which he actually agreed. His friend Kama, finds this decision absurd, and leaves to live on Seirai.
    - Ruu is consequently sacrificed and his blood filled the ritual goblet (In the JP/CN sub version, Ruu was actually skinned alive, had his tongue cut off, sacrificed his blood, bones were removed from his body for the sacrifice. )
    - The Thunderbird returns hoping to hear Ruu sing again, only to find his body on the altar. She grows infuriated and destroyed the entire tribe in her rage. She curses the people of Tsurumi to suffer her endless destruction until she is again able to hear Ruu singing.
    - For some reason unbeknownst to us, Ruu does actually remain on Tsurumi, likely due to ley line abnormalities and such
    - Ruu believes something went wrong during the ceremony and attempts again, and the island creates illusions of his family and friends of his tribe. After every cermony, the destructions begins again, Ruu continues to aid the rituals for thousands on thousand of years, hiding in places where thunder could not strike
    - Raiden Ei eventually ended up killing the Thunderbird during the Archon war, and sealed it's residual power in the Asase Shrine
    - Later on, Asase Hibiki unsealed the bird's power to help Ako Domeki, causing Seirai to be transformed into it's current appearance
    - Presently, the traveler arrives on Tsurumi with the current generation of Kama's family, and accepts Ruu's request to aid in the ceremony once again, where they learn the truth of the endless destruction and torment the thunderbird place on the island. The traveler eventually realizes that the only way to stop this cycle of destruction is for the bird to hear Ruu sing once more.
    - Ruu is unable to leave Tsurumi however, so we provide him with a Peculiar Pinion we acquired in a previous journey. With this aid, Ruu is able to travel to Seirai, and the residual energies of the Thunderbird acknowledge his singing, and the curse is lifted. Ruu comes to realize just how long he's really spent on Tsurumi, how many ceremonies and rituals he has re-enacted.
    - His final request is that we take the Pinion with us on our travels, since it contains parts of his spriit, and we will be able to help him fulfil his dream of travelling the world

That song being the last song of the Inazuma arc was the most memorable event of my Genshin journey.
I remember everyone saying Inazuma sucks, Hoyo sucks, blah blah blah, and I felt like it was kind of discouraging to continue playing. But then after playing this world quest, I felt like none of that mattered because in that moment I won’t forget how much comfort it has brought me during the toughest times under quarantine and how this game has brought people together from all around the world. Slander Genshin all you want but this game set the bar high for mobile industry and stood its ground in the whole gaming industry. It deserves to be where it’s at now.

    • @amplesstratleholm7609
      @amplesstratleholm7609 ปีที่แล้ว +3

To be fair, a lot of the dislike towards Inazuma was due to the Archon quest, which was poorly paced. Once you get to the extra areas (Seirai Island onwards) it gets A LOT better, and reaches its peak by Enkanomiya and Tsurumi.

    • @anastasiao4036

People only really said it was bad because of the archon quest and main areas. The areas after the archon quest people don't complain about. I feel like lumping all the complains together and saying it doesn't matter because of things that weren't part of the issues isn't helping at all...

Thematically, Ruu's storyline is about the tragic mistaking of evil for good because of the non-communication between Tsurumi Island's inhabitants and their local god-bird. Don't communicate or be heard, tragedy follows.
However, this same storyline is also about the beauty of our human stories and what can happen when we connect and are heard on that deep level. Even if your story is tragic, you are a human, and that means your story has meaning. The beauty of being human and having the meaning of your story heard (be that by a Traveler and their companion, or even by your descendants) is powerfully hopeful.
Thank you so much for your analysis, letting me put together what I'd found in the storyline with your reading of the music. Keep being open-hearted!

Man, I did this quest as soon as the island came out and it still really hurts to listen to this. Ruu's story is incredibly agonizing and tragic, he went through so much pain both physically and mentally that he repeats day after day for the sole reason that he thought it was something he HAD to do. I won't get too into it in the case that you wish to play through it yourself (which I highly recommend as it is one of the best stories in the game!), but it's just unbelievable just how cruel his fate was and listening to his song it's jarring how peaceful and hopeful and /kind/ it sounds compared to the reality he went through. Genshin's main story may not be dark and tragic, but a lot of the world quest stories are. This one made me sick to my stomach when realizing just what was happening to Ruu and I remember just balling during the cutscene where we first hear him singing this. This song never seizes to make me incredibly emotional even now.
If you do decide to play through this quest, I hope you are able to experience it fully with no stress over rushing or missing anything. The whole island's soundtrack is really good, not just Ruu's song. I still listen to it to this day and I hope you get to enjoy it for yourself.

I absolutely loved this world quest and the music. Specially the piano cover for Ruu’s Song, which is what got me into learning how to play the piano. It’s such a beautiful song filled with emotions from start to finish.

before sumeru and fontaine were open to the world, i went back to the tsurumi island and stood in front of the tree in the kanna mountain just to respect ruu's wishes, and recalled all my travels, as if i was sharing my stories from the journey with him. probably seems pointless to some, but that was my personal promise with ruu. and i have the island namecard on my game profile too, so ruu is travelling with me.

Yessss, finally a react vid to this piece! I can't stress it enough that I find this to be one of the saddest, somewhat melancholic but also poignant pieces of Genshin Impact. For me, there's a tinge of hopefulness, acceptance (which are normally associated as positive), while all at the same time being devastatingly sad- I thought they wouldn't be able to top Once Colored Memories (Dragonspine OST that gave me the same feelings) but holyy
I think if I could illustrate it, it's like the music of a once glorious era/civilization that's just now dead (which, hello, is exactly Dragonspine and Tsurumi). So you're left with nostalgia, like I said acceptance, then hope but also grief. I really love this piece!

As a person who doesn't really play Genshin Impact, but watching people play it instead and came across to this song by chance. I literally crying when I hear this song for the first time as if I was immersed by the song completely. That's when I was trying to find out the story behind it and it just made me cry even more. This is no doubt the best ost I've heard and you also summaries it perfectly, it makes me happy somehow. I really wish I can go back and play it again.

My god, this was one of the saddest, most heart-wrenching world quests up to that point in the game, when it came out and I'd argue it's the most emotional I got playing through a non-voiced quest line. This OST really put it over the edge for me and I'm really glad you reacted to it!

Every time I listen to this song or read the peculiar pinion description, I feel a knot in my throat. It's such a sweet and sad song, from one of the best world quests this game has to offer. :') I hope Ruu is enjoying all the parts of the world we're showing him in our journey...

This island broke my mind with all the puzzles and fog mechanics, then broke my heart when I understood everything Ruu went through. Unpopular opinion, maybe, but Tsurumi deserved the curse they got. It's a pity that it affected Ruu too, but at least the traveler helped him finally rest.

This quest.... it broke me, and I still remember how much I cried when we heard Ruu sing it. The melody is so simple, something that the mind of a child could definitely come up with, and yet at the same time it's soothingly beautiful and just incredibly sad in a bittersweet, tragic way given the context. I'm just glad we helped everyone in Tsurumi find peace, some of the stories the ghosts told were just so sad. Thank you for reacting to this

Ruu's story is such a sad one I actually recommend you don't just rely on the comments to tell you but go play it yourself instead. It really is such a good story about very cruel practices and how that child had to let go in the end. How the island got destroyed. So good. So sad. T-T

After playing this world quest that gets more and more darker and depressing without hearing any human voices, Ruu finally singing his song touches your heart. It's a bleak hope after all the suffering he has been through and even though you can't change the past, he can finally get the peaceful rest he deserves.
I really enjoyed your breakdown of the song, you explained so well how and why we feel these things in music in a more technical way that I don't know much about.

Ruu's quest is the only quest in the game that actually made me cry so far in genshin impact, although many other world and archon quests made me teary and close to crying. So far, I have yet to cry again and still looking for the future world quest to cry on. At the same time, Ruu's world quest is the reason why I love doing world quest until this day because the game actually kill some characters and you feel attached to them more than the archon quests since you were there with them from beginning of the adventure to the very end of their lives.

When Ruu spoke to the main character saying "I'm really tired, I need to sleep" That's when I lost it. What I really love about this song is whether you played the game or not, you can feel the melancholic beauty in it and tell that it isn't a happy song. It's a sort of lullaby, a song you feel in that vulnerable space between peace and longing. A song that describes the needed rest.
This game excels in storytelling and crafting, but the music is underappreciated in many facets. A simple quest from polygons that aren't real stole my heart and I love it.

The teapot in Genshin has an option to choose the background music you had to listen too, and Ruu's song is always on there for me. Wished it also had the vocalization but the instrumentals is enough to remind me how Tsurumi was the Island to get me hooked backed into exploring Inazuma as well an overall calming piece. It's a great piece that I will always recognize when I hear it, specially on how it greatly portrays the tragedy of Tsurumi island.
