Jamel, the bassist Geezer Butler wrote this about the devil falling in love with a mortal woman. He is powerless against love. If you want to "go to church" please react to "After Forever" from Master of Reality. They preaching in that one.
Concur. After Forever has pro-Christian lyrics, and still points out the hypocrisy of folks while providing a solid jam. Embryo/Children of the Grave is also awesome, while affirming Sabbath's self-professed hippie influence as being about peace.
It's supposed to be "shocking" when you hear that line about Lucifer introducing himself. "He" says thru the whole song, that he isn't going to reveal himself until she falls completely in love with him. Then it's too late. This song is meant as a warning. At least that's how I take it. This song is beautifully crafted.
@NatureBoy210 If you're talking about Helter Skelter and Summer time blues, then you're right. I like to think of it this way, Helter Skelter and Summer time blues are the baby kicking it's mom's womb. Black Sabbath is when the baby is born. The baby here is Heavy Metal.
@NatureBoy210 Oh. That's a matter of personal preference really. I love both depending on my mood. If I feel that I have to listen to something with a doomy or stoner sound with lyrics focussing on the reality of what's going on in the world, and get lost in the grove, Sabbath is my option. If I want something energetic and about dragons, monsters etc with short single or double riff songs, I prefer Iron Maiden.
@NatureBoy210 None, but I hope you get my point, it's more like a really exciting fairy tale with an addicting groove. I told about dragons because a lot of the power metal bands talk about them, and are heavily inspired by the lyrics and sound of Maiden.
1. Play groovy basslines. 2. Write dark lyrics about death and alienation. 3. Punch Nazis in the face. Everything that I need to know about life I learned from Geezer.
Don't read too much into the "evil" side of it. The point of the song, as I see it, is to show that even Lucifer himself is not immune to the power of love. Butler, who wrote the song, once said that it's about the power of love making the devil give up evil and become good to win the heart of the woman he loved. Oh, and "NIB" has absolutely nothing to do with the lyrics of the song. They couldn't think of a title, but while writing the song, one of the band members (I think it was Iomi) was making fun of another's beard (I think it was Ward), which was a style known as a "nib", so they called the song NIB.
@Salem It's one of my favorite love songs. I think it's funny that at the same time Black Sabbath was singing about a woman turning the devil good, Led Zeppelin was singing about women being demons ("soul of a woman was created below", from Dazed and Confused), yet Sabbath got the reputation for being "devil music".

The reason the bass solo fades out is that it's actually a separate track called 'Bassically'. Most people think it's an intro, but it's a separate track. The song N.I.B. is pretty much a warning about making a so-called 'deal with the devil' in exchange for material possessions. He'll give you anything you want, but it comes at a price... N.I.B. was a play on drummer Bill Ward's nickname, 'Nibby' because of his beard's resemblance to a nib ,the writing tip of a calligraphy style pen . Fans took to calling it Nativity In Black, which may as well be the actual name these days. Don't be scared. it's just a song, the devil isn't gonna jump out of your speakers & grab you. LOL!
Ozzy was stoned and looking at drummer Bill Ward's beard. He said he looked like a "pen nib" so they ended up calling the song NIB. When the record came out, someone from the record company decided to add the little period dots between the letters, so it became N.I.B. The Wizard, Warning and NIB are the best from that album imo, specially Warning, that long bluesy rocking solo on steroids is to me what elevates Tony Iommi from being just a guitar lead to a true guitar hero.
The essence of simplicity with those Iommi riffs. Classic production that launched a million metal bands. The Platonic ideal of heavy metal. The rest is history!
Dude,... you just made my whole day. One of my all time favorite songs and I love ALL your reactions. Great video. N.I.B it became nativity in black but its origins are much simpler. I believe it was Bill Ward the drummer who had a pointed goatee that looked like a nib (tip) from a fountain pen. So they named the song N.I.B. Peace.
NIB is about Satan falling in love with a human woman an trying to get her to fall in love with him. NIB refers to the beard Bill Ward had at the time, it was shaped like the nib of a pen. They had a problem naming the song so it was name after Wards beard, NIB.
Nib is short for niberd which means demon. Also the song is much more then the devil falling in love. Its about love being so powerful that the most evil being can fall pray to it. You where on the right track i just had to season it. Haha
There are so many stories as to how this song got its name and truthfully I don’t even thing the band knows how it came about they were so intoxicated for these recordings
Love Uriah Heep! Always looked at Stealin' and Easy Living as "pay the bills" type of songs. Geared for radio consumption. Nothing wrong with that, just not very representative of what UH was capable of. Songs like Bird of Prey, The Wizard, July Morning, Look at Yourself and Sweet Lorraine were more in line with what they were all about. A hard side with a dose of prog.
Jamal, I saw Black Sabbath at the New Haven Arena back in March of 1972 (Ozzy was skinny then, and had most of his brain cells.) They were LOUD! It was the tour for the Master Of Reality album, but they played a lot of songs from Vol.4 (which they had just recorded in L.A.). One song you have to check out is "Supernaut" it's one of their best. Good luck and stay healthy.
Holy Moly!!! This song/songs-“Bassically/NIB” is how I learned how to play bass. In my late 20’s I joined a funk group playing bass (I’m primarily a guitarist) and all I did was play Geezer type lines, and it sounded great!!! Eventually I learned real (jazz based) funk lines, but I still always had that “core” Sabbath thing going on. As for the lyrics, remember, they were flirting with occult imagery from the earliest days. They weren’t endorsing satanism, as it were. In fact “Lord of this World”, “After Forever”, “Children of the Grave”, and “Into the Void”, from the album “Master of Reality” could be viewed as the first Christian metal tunes... Drummer Bill Ward’s nickname was “nib” because his beard was pointed like the nib of a fountain pen. They didn’t have a name for the song so they called it “N.I.B”. Some people say it stands for “Nativity in Black”, but Bill has debunked that assertion.
Carl Palmer is one of the top drummers for me, watch any live video of him and you know why. Number one on my list of underrated drummers in my opinion because he doesn't get enough notice.

Jonathan Abenhaim, it is NOT “Nativity in Black”-they named the song NIB because they couldn’t come up with a good name for the song, so they just named it after what they thought Bill Ward’s goatee was shaped like: the NIB of a pen.
I just wrote a comment saying exactly that. They played and sang horror movie lyrics its an act they aren't and have never to my knowledge devil worshippers.
Peace.
Black Sabbath is life
A track from this album that doesn't get enough love is Behind The Wall Of Sleep.
Absolutely love that song. I love the story in each of their songs.
Haha
@Darth Sabbath-no, you’re on the wrong track. What Keven Savage said about the song is true.
There are so many stories as to how this song got its name and truthfully I don’t even thing the band knows how it came about they were so intoxicated for these recordings
Kevan Savage has the correct response
@@bluekg13 please site a source for this version of the story coming from a Sabbath member because all of them tell the same story and thats not it.
Uriah Heep - "Stealin" is a good one Jamel, underrated band of the 70's.
The Wizard also
Very underrated. Great stuff.
Paradise/The Spell is just magical!
Maybe he can jump into the John Lawton era with Sympathy and Free Me...
How about July Morning far better.
Plus “Snowblind”, “Faeries Wear Boots” & “Behind The Wall Of Sleep”.
he's gotta do Snowblind !!
Sweetleaf is decant also
Welcome back Sir.....A HUGE..CHEERS from New Zealand....BOOM!!
I had no idea you were back and now I have to binge watch...awesome!
Groovy :)
Man more Black Sabbath please. And stay safe my brotha.
Sabbath bloody sabbath
One of the bands that made me want to learn drums, the other was Emerson, Lake and Palmer, (brain salad surgery)
Cozy Powell and Rainbow did it for me. ELP is not a bad way to go either!
Carl Palmer is one of the top drummers for me, watch any live video of him and you know why. Number one on my list of underrated drummers in my opinion because he doesn't get enough notice.
@@noahhallman9174 My favorite that I saw live in my concert going years. I love Carl Palmer and ELP. Just at the time, Rainbow was rising! ELP was going bye bye.
Good influences!
I love how conflicted Jamel is about liking this. Ozzy would be proud.
More likely Geezer. He wrote the lyrics.
Geezer by the way has allways been a believing catholic christian.
One of my all time favorite Sabbath songs. I still get chills everytime I hear this song. It never gets old 🤟😎🐶
Woohoo NIB finally. The holy trinity of metal. Thank you Jamal, hope you're staying safe too brother
NIB is Nativity In Black
who are the other members of the holy trinity of metal?
@@shoogerkane Don't forget it was back in the 60's so the metal was not the same as today by any means... The holy trinity of metal, the founders because it was the hardest version of rock when they came out was Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath
Jonathan Abenhaim, it is NOT “Nativity in Black”-they named the song NIB because they couldn’t come up with a good name for the song, so they just named it after what they thought Bill Ward’s goatee was shaped like: the NIB of a pen.
@@shoogerkane Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin Holy Trinity or Holy Untrinity is both used.
Yoooooooo my bestie and I were just talking about how much The Wizard from Sabbath kicks ass and then this gets posted two minutes later
N.I.B Mite of scared him from, sabbath the 1st sabbath album amazingly haunting play it every halloween ....
Gandalf!
Love the wizard. You have good taste 👍
Gotta check out "Symptom of the Universe." When Black Sabbath introduced the world to thrash.
Sabotage is my favorite Sabbath album. Megalomania is a freaking monster.
To be fair they introduced the world to metal everything else came from that
Everyone stole a little from Sabbath they did it all
I have been saying this for years, good to hear someone else thinks so as well.
I believe Blue Oyster Cult's "The Red And The Black" did that prior.
That is the genius of the OG Black Sabbath. Once that twist hits, it changes the context of the entire song.
So many great tracks to pick from. I would suggest "Snowblind" from their older stuff or "Air Dance" from a little later😉
Not meant to be taken literally, look at this song like a horror movie... Entertainment purposes only!!😋
I just wrote a comment saying exactly that.
They played and sang horror movie lyrics its an act they aren't and have never to my knowledge devil worshippers.
I take the lyrics as a warning against taking the hand of the Devil.
OK I'm not religious but I don't think that matters it just depends on what the listener wants to believe and as young men who doesn't want to have loads of fans listening to your music paying for the privilege. Its horror music for those who also like hard Rock.
@@andrewmstancombe1401 tony Iommi is a catholic so i doubt there was any satan warship within the band
Two more sabbath songs you should check out are "electric funeral" and "snowblind"
ksmpu1 huuuuge +1 for Snowblind
Fairies wear boots
Electric Funeral is so under rated, One of Sabbath's Masterpieces.
Also Wheels of confusion. Nobody talks about that one.
Snow blind just rocks
REACTION: Jamel, PLEASE do a reaction video to "I'd Love to Change the World" by Tens Years After. I *promise* you will feel it. The message is timeless -- and the music will stir you inside. The guitar lead (by Alvin Lee) is haunting. Lee is one of the greatest rock/blues guitarists of all time. (You want to hear *clean* speed (no stings buzzing on fret bars)? Give a listen to his lead in "I'm Going Home." Amazing performance. But for feeling -- please, *please* give "I'd Love to Change the World" a listen. I promise you will like it.
Agree, great suggestion!
@@gbcrowne271 Thanks!
Ten Years After Now they where a great band and I agree that song does have a great message
@@kevinterrell47 I agree!
Ten Years After is one of the most under-appreciated groups ever! Such a tight band led by Alvin Lee...dang son!
I love how everyone that’s listening to this song for the first time thinks that it’s just a catchy love song. You just wait!
Black Sabbath are the OG's of metal for sure. Everything they did was and is influential on metal to this very day. All my respect to them for blazing the trail that so many of my favorite bands have followed.
This is a classic twist as every first time listener hearing what sounds like another love song then hears that verse and finds out it's Lucifer calling one away from a former way of life.
Please soon react to After Forever by Black Sabbath. The lyrics are crystal clear and compared to this, it will take you by surprise. Complete 180.
Go for it my brother.
Haven't even listened to this yet but I love the song and I love your channel. Jane's Addiction "Been Caught stealing" is a great song and an awesome video. Video might even be better than a Primus video?!?!?!?!?! And that says a lot!
Yes!!! ‘Ritual de lo Habitual’ is a great record! I also like ‘Three Days’ and ‘Of Course’.
Three Days!!!
Then She Did!!
Obvious!
Lost In Vegas just released a reaction to Ocean Size on You Tube that is pretty entertaining, fyi.
I love that song Oh, and the mountain song and Jane Says
Yes! You should watch that video, and then . . . you can walk right out the door.
This was my first cassette and it got confiscated with my walkman by a nun in my catechism class. I hope she gave it a good listen.
Say times have changed, walked in to my teacher (a priest) blasting some ratt as everyone was walking into class in highschool a couple years back. What a guy.
I got kicked out of catechism class at about 11 years old . The nun heard me say "He looks like a big scarecrow" ...meaning the crucifix
BLACK SABBATH. The original, and best heavy metal band. PERIOD. there sound is RAW, and always sounds like its straight out the Peavy, straight out of the garage.
Jamal, I love your reaction videos. especially sabbath , primus, clutch , and so many more. I gotta expand my ears like you have. i'm a hard rock , jazz, funk fan but I know there's more :)
Listen to hand of doom... sounds like rage against the machine 20 years earlier
+1 For Hand of Doom, Best Anti Drug song ever written!!!!
Yeah! What a great song! The tempo changes are awesome!
@@billgui347 Anti drug song, sung by Ozzy Osbourne. The irony.
Push the needle in
yessssss
When it was released NIB was rumored to be Nativity In Black but it was really just Bill Ward's goatee that the band thought looked like a pen nib
Jamal, next you must give their song "After Forever" a listen. It's a song about Christ and how we must listen to Jesus. Black Sabbath wrote about many things.
One thing I really like about Ozzy's early career is how you can tell how British he is. I kinda miss that in his later work
Band name came from a Boris Karloff movie poster “Black Sabbath”. That the band saw in a theater window. 👍
And now you know why metal has had to fight uphill against generations of uptight church ladies. ;^)
Before you brand Black Sabbath as an evil band, listen to the catchy “After Forever” and reassess. You must do it! Thanks for the react.
You also have to listen to "Into The Void" from Master of Reality too Wayne Stark ....I'm sure you know it!
Yes.
So many " christians" panicking about Satan, burning records with God's message ( in a time- relevant, and"message- going- where- it's- needed" format.)
Makes you wonder about the true nature of Satan and just who does his work!
Jamel's gonna start keeping a bottle of holy water next to him if this keeps up.
Hi jamel thank you for all the effort your putting into your channel sometimes when I'm depressed about the state of affairs occurring in our country right now your reaction videos make me smile so keep up the good work and thank you

These boys took The Blues to a whole different place... Jamal, I just noticed in the next queued video, "War Pigs" from several months ago, you are wearing a Cal Poly Pomona hoodie. My Alma Mater! Did you go there? Might this help explain why you are among the coolest and most eclectic reactors on YT? 😎
When the blues band Earth came out of their rehearsals one day they saw at the cinema across the street, people lined up to see Rosemary's baby. Legend goes they spoke amongst themselves and figured if people were paying $ to get scared why not try it with the music? Nativity In Black is one of my favorite all-time metal songs. Glad you enjoyed it brother! Trippy how it sounds like a rhythm heavy blues jam. Where the singer is trying to seduce his love. Promising the moon and the stars. Then it's revealed to be Lou himself doing the wooing! 🤘🏽🇺🇸🤘🏽
All of Sabbath's references to Satan in their lyrics are used to show that all of us have good and evil inside of us, and it's up to us as to which one we feed. Snowblind needs to be on your list next. Peace and Love brother. 🤘
Now imagine Ozzy doing this with Les Claypool on bass, because that actually happened.

Black Sabbath-After Forever, almost a Gospel song.
yeah, a gospel from hell :D:D
Actually it's a very devout perspective. Much of the band's visuals were for show. I think Iommi had some pretty deep religious ties.
@@SargNickFury you're right, both Tony and Ozzy are religious...... Sabbath is not only one of my most favorite bands, but one of the greatest bands in music history..... but still, I have to admit the fact, that when it comes to their image, they "stole" a lot of it from this psychadelic/acid band from chicago called COVEN...... they had that image back in the 60's already..... even their former bass player's name from back in the day was Oz Osborne :D:D there are just too many red flags, when you start comparing the image of these 2 bands :D Black Sabbath never admitted stealing that band's image, but you should've seen Tony Iommi's face when this interviewer once asked him about it..... I think it was back in the 80's...... it was quite obvious from Tony's reaction, that he knows very well what that interviewer was talking about :D:D but I don't really care about the image that much..... for me, the music is the most important thing and I can safely say, that Black Sabbath is still to this day, one of the most original sounding bands ever...... they are one of those truly unique sounding bands that sound like everybody and nobody at the same time, cause they combine several influences....... you know, bands like Pink Floyd, Queen, King Crimson etc......
watching these videos is like having a new friend over and they want to flip thru your record collection... well done.
Nativity in black was the 1st song I ever heard by Sabbath, have been a fan since.
It's a classic Lucifer tale....giving you your every wish , you just have to give him your soul....that's all.
So she’ll give me whatever I want if I just give her something that doesn’t even exist? That’s a great deal!
Autumn Phillips you definitely don’t have a soul. Get lost
Neither do you, Joel Dukes. There’s no such thing, and you’re an idiot if you think there is.
