    The book by Ernest Cline is basically an homage to 80's culture, specifically early computer games and arcade games. The movie changed quite a bit, perhaps because much of the audience wasn't even alive when old folks like me played games like Joust which figures prominently in the book.

      for a lifelong gamer like me, the book was gold - i've read it 3 times and loved it each time being so familiar with most of the references to games and culture. the movie can't compare to the book but is great in it's own right - a different story perfect for non-gamers but with a ton of "hidden" gamer and culture references shoved everywhere throughout the film. i've watched the film 10 or 12 times to enjoy all those hidden eggs. however, if you're a real gamer and know the history and evolution of gaming from its' birth to VR, the movie will never suffice - READ THE BOOK !

    Hi Cassie, so glad you finally got to see this one, so many classic avatar characters in this, Chucky, Iron Giant, etc. The Oasis is something we should do in the future and of course it should be controlled by a righteous person or group of people. The voice of the assassin so to speak was Deadpool's bar buddy and was in Cloverfield as Hud. Just another great video game movie, reminds me of an updated Tron where you're the user controlling your character. Nice reaction. I suggest Condorman, Shipwrecked, The Time Machine (1960), Masters Of The Universe, Legend (1985), The Dark Crystal, Gamer, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, and The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad. These are some of my favorites. Please put them on a poll or have them as a random one to pick. Thank you!

      Tbh, Ready Player One is not a bad movie, but it is more or less a studio and director flexing about what can be done in visual effects. Nowadays visually speaking everything goes with movies like this, the Pandora franchise and so on...
      I absolute understand why it could lose against movies like Close Encounter Of The Third Kind - in that days such movies set new marks in terms of creativity or pictorial language.

    • @jp3813

      @@NiersFloater Spielberg certainly likes VFX, but I don't think that was his primary motive for this movie. He's a fan of pop culture, and what he really wanted to flex was his ability to acquire all the licensing to feature the massive amount of IPs in this film much like he did w/ producing Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The difference is that when you saw Mickey & Bugs in WFRR, those are the actual cartoon characters rather than human characters disguised as them.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Banterbear Maybe I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that legally, you don't need permission to show copyrighted/trademarked things in movies, if you're just showing that they exist. For example, you don't need permission to show a character drinking a can of Pepsi. However if the movie revolved around someone leading a crusade to convert people from drinking Coke to drinking Pepsi, that would be different.
      Again, I could be wrong, but I believe the reason movies usually license things and/or get permission is just to cover their ass in case the company doesn't like how they depict the item and decides to sue them, claiming it disparages the brand. For example if a movie showed someone being murdered by being forced to drink Liquid Plumber, the company would probably have a problem with that.
      When it comes to using stuff from movies and TV shows, I'm not sure what the rule is. I mean, I don't think you need DC's permission for a kid to wear a Superman T-shirt, or have a Batman figure standing on their bookcase n the background. Even with Disney stuff, it would probably be legal to show a character going to ComicCon, and having Star Wars characters walk by in the background, as long as you weren't focusing on them, or making them part of the story.

    • @Banterbear
      @Banterbear 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lurkerrekrul Definitely wrong. They had to license everything for the film. I just looked up a Quora on it. Most were already owned by Warner Brothers, some they got permission for, and others had to be left out because they couldn't get permission. Ie, there was a Blade Runner sequence in the novel, and they had to swap it out for the film.
      I don't know how it works for things like, say, a character wearing a T-shirt or someone using the terms Padawan, but I think they are generally allowed, one is good advertisment anyway, and the other is something that's fairly common parlance/slang.
      Of course, a lot of companies will PAY the movie to include their products, as again, it's a form of advertising...good example.is in Bond films with cars and watches...it's all product placement.

    18:09: "The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai: Across The 8th Dimension." A great movie. About the best way I can describe it is an absolutely silly film that takes it's absolute silliness absolutely seriously. I highly recommend. Has Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Clancy Brown, and Christopher Lloyd, among many others.
    20:54: The currency is kind of difficult to understand if you aren't up on modern gaming and "microtransactions." For the Oasis, you can spend real money on stuff in the game world to try and get ahead. But if you're good at earning coins in the Oasis, you can trade those for real stuff (as Wade did when he bought his new suit with the coins he got for finding the first key). So yeah, for a lot of people, playing in the Oasis is their "job." IOI and their "Loyalty Centers" are basically indentured servitude, you wrack up debt, you work for IOI in the Oasis until your debt is cleared off. . . but while you're doing that, they're taking care of you, which probably costs money that gets added to your debt. . .

    I have watched this in the cinema back in 2018 with a good friend of mine as we are both movie 🎥 and Spielberg fans. The slight extended difference is I am also a DVD/Bluray discs movie fan but he’s not. So I also have the digital disc in Bluray format for this movie while he doesn’t. If you are in your 50s and have watched as much movies and TV as I have in the cinema, on VHS, Laserdisc, VCD, DVD, Bluray, and enjoyed everything that the 70s, 80s and 90s have to offer, then you should be able to identify circa 95% of the movies, TV and games references in Ready Player One. Due to this movie, I was inspired to read the novel by Ernest Cline of which this movie is based on and have finished it. What works for the book 📕 does not necessarily work for film 🎥 and vice versa but director Steven Spielberg is wise to remedy this. For example: one particular scene is The Shining horror scene which is not in the novel but included as both Spielberg and Cline are fans of the late Stanley Kubrick

They are making fun of the culture in this movie, they are pointing out how Halliday is so immersed in this type of culture that his personal life and social skills are completely atrophied. The easter egg you may have missed was the movie telling you to put the controller down, brush your teeth and take a shower and go out into the world and live it. My favorite obscure pop culture reference is the design on the back of H's van. The demon face. It's part of the art handouts for the original module S1: Tomb of Horrors, for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

      Spielberg's last two movies, West Side Story (2021) & The Fabelmans (2022), both flopped at the box office, due to a widespread lack of interest in movie musicals & prestige films and because they both opened around the same time as two Marvel movies, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) & Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). In my view, Spielberg deserved better. Here's to hoping that his upcoming UFO movie does well in two years.

Definitely gotta watch Buckaroo Banzai, so underrated.

      @@philipocallaghan, honestly, I feel like he was misrepresented and underutilized in this movie. Considering how the whole concept of the iron giant is that he doesn’t use his weapons to the fact that he doesn’t “want to be a gun”, the writers of this movie would’ve realized this. Honestly, I think a better situation would’ve seen Sorrento utilizing the Giant instead of MegaGodzilla. It would even make him just as ignorant to not understanding the whole point of certain iconic figures. When he chooses the Iron Giant, he does so because he sees it has weapons that can kill. But it’s up to the characters to see that the Giant doesn’t kill, therefore try and teach him to be good again, like Hogarth did in the movie.
