I really wanted to buy a 308 Amber is a Cat at the Colorado Pen Show today, but they (Pen Realm) were asking $60 for it. After checking the Etsy price ($36) I guess I’ll wait and try to snag one when PenBBS releases some more.
I’ve had my 308 in Niangao with chrome trim since probably 2018. It has a 2-tone nib, which I was ambivalent about, but it’s my best PenBBS nib out of the box, and I have 3 308s, a 309, and a 456. I 100% want a 489, and the bulkfiller whose number I can never remember. I have a Calligraphy #1 on the way and am likely to put that into my 456. I am kicking myself for not having thought to order a parts kit with that calligraphy nib, and now they’re sold out. So once again, I wait!

You, sir, have stoked a PenBBS fire in me ... I got my first 308 Amber is a Cat and I LOVE it. I found some leftover 486 with cat roll stop stock on aliexpress and grabbed one and should be here soon and I'm so stoked! Finally saw the Galaxy resin in person on my first Jinhao 100 Centennial and wew lad, you aren't kidding that is some BEAUTIFUL resin. So, a thank you and a what have you done to me, cause now I will be waiting with baited breath to get a Year of the Tiger, and hoping someday to catch a pretty resin 500 (like amber is a cat or galaxy), and I would love also to happen across that magnetic fill one - I am in love with that filling system
I always have to hold back in getting PenBBS pens. It's kind of tempting to get all models in all favorite acrylics, but out of the favorites I have a 456 niangao, a 355 amber is a cat, a 456 hidden path and last week ordered a 489 in Galaxy (as well as some others). The only one that could tempt me would be more hidden paths, that's definitely my favorite.
I purchased the 489 after seeing the disassembly video showing you could remove the ink sac(?)/converter part for cleaning. If not I would have skipped. So far only the 487 has a poor filling system since the magnet does not work well. The 355 is my favorite.
I agree with the 487 being unsuccessful. It will be interesting to see if the TD unit, even though it can be removed, can be disassembled further to replace the sac.

Hopefully it works well, I am not knowledge enough on sheaffer, however I think some of the last touchdown fillers were removable to allow for use with cartridges, but were less effective since they did not form as strong of a vacuum.
@@edisontrent5244 That is true. Later TD fillers had removable TD units so users could fit cartridges. But even the earliest TD fillers were able to be disassembled to replace the sac.
Great Review as always. Your reviews are what had me get my first penbbs pen which is a 480 in galaxy. The nib on mine wasn't the greatest but was easy to swap out for one I liked. The pen is extremely beautiful and while my 480 was more expensive than the 308 slightly for the price i agree that that quality acrylic is very hard to come by. I will say Majohn/moonman does take a close second with some of their acrylics on the m800 and m600 models. The quality of pens coming out of China with the swap ability of their nibs if you don't like it is a real treat and I think more people should be aware of that when first starting out rather than getting locked into something more traditional

Hey Xerxius! I watch the Facebook page "Taste the Rainbow" which is a fan page for Penbbs. Beini (the Etsy seller for Penbbs) and Jialong Su (the CEO of Penbbs) are both members. I also watch Beini Zheng's Instagram feed as she tips everyone off when something is coming. When she announced new products, I get up early on Sunday mornings (6am PST) and check on the Etsy page (refresh refresh) every 15 minutes for two or three hours to see if the shelves start filling up. Then I BUY what I want immediately (don't just put it in your cart). The Amber sold out in five minutes! The only way to get stuff after it is gone from Beini's Etsy store is to pay extra on other Etsy shops (esybuy), Aliexpress, eBay or TaoBao (if you can type and speak Chinese).
I've watched this through a couple of times. It's enough for me to line up an order as I've not used a PenBBS nor do i have one of that type. I'll probably get a blue one (order now for Christmas). I didn't see the #15 nib in action ... did I miss it? I'd be interested in a mini review of that as I prefer the architect style grind and watched your review of the #2 and #7 and wonder how it compares.
A question those PenBBS aficionados out there: which models have the girthiest sections? I own the 355, 308, and 456 but find the sections on the slender side. I hope the new models are a bit more substantial in that regard. I'll buy 10 of the PenBBS model that has a section like the Edison Menlo (which shares a lot of similarities with the 308).
I would tend to agree that PenBBS is one of the best fountain pen makers out there for all of the reasons you list; however, their sections are too thin for me to use for more than one or two sentences. I wish they would develop an oversized version of their current models.
My last few PenBBS pens were a disappointment. My 491 with a clip had a flaw in the acrylic in the section and ink would leak out. I had to fill it in with superglue. My 500 leaks through the top of the cap if ink gets in (took me a while to figure out why I was always inky when using. I have not written them off, but I will think twice before my next purchase.
Well, how would you compare PennBBS up against Ranga? I think Ranga is a little more expensive but they both offer a huge variety of finishes and nib options but Ranga also has ebonite plus their shipping seems to be considerably faster. For me they're both excellent options: I like Ranga because of the personalization you can do to your own pen and I like PenBBS for the innovation they put in their filling mechanisms.
That's a nice comparison Pat! Ranga has a huge variety of models, finishes (both acrylic and ebonite) and nib options at reasonable prices. Perhaps Penbbs is the poor man's Rangas? (not that Rangas are for rich dudes).
When I saw the video, it took me about 1 minute to order the pen. PenBBS has again revived a very interesting filling system. Apparently there is no need to panic. Today (1st of October) there are still some Galaxy models available. Maybe your video will change that...

But you can only see it under the "All" tab (from where I found and bought it), not under the "Model 489" tab. Maybe they have some regional differences in their offerings. My 489 has been dispatched and is expected to arrive somewhere in november.

And of course jinhao and wing sung pens definitely have everything you mentioned that's good about penbbs pens at a fraction of the price. The more expensive jinhao pens even have the same level of quality and are about 10 usd cheaper. Also! Moonman/mahjon especially does beautiful acrylic pens that can be eyedroppered and accept #6 nibs (which jinhao struggles with).

I think it's a hit or miss thing for a lot of people. I love my Himalaya v2 it's been perfect out of the box since I got it. I got one other with a slightly less flex nib and it writes lovely too, it just stank lol. Got a free Muft and I did throw that one away it never worked right. I like them though and their nibs are lovely for cheap replacements :)

Penbbs is a small, independent (not owned by Hero) pen maker that is comprised of a handful of pen enthusiasts. They make pens in the 100s, not the 10,000s like Jinhao, Wing Sung, Moonman etc. They are very small scale and therefore, their most sought after finishes are limited in numbers. When Niangao goes up on the Etsy store, there are about 50 units available and if you're not there when they go up, you have to wait for Penbbs to make more. That will sometimes take up to a year.
Wow, that explains a lot. I appreciate these details, as I was trying to connect the dots between these companies and didn’t get too far. Many of the pens I want that I figured would be fairly common & easy to get have actually proven to be quite elusive.

The Penbbs 308 is their flagship and best selling pen. It is very reliable. If you are wanting to swap the nib to some other brand of #6, the Penbbs 480 has more cap clearance.

I make my own. 9 parts distilled water 1 part ammonia and two drops of dish soap like Dawn.

Wow, that explains a lot. I appreciate these details, as I was trying to connect the dots between these companies and didn’t get too far. Many of the pens I want that I figured would be fairly common & easy to get have actually proven to be quite elusive.
But do you really like that?

Por otro lado, cada vez tengo más curiosidad por las penbbs en las que no me había fijado antes. Y como bien dices, dan una sensación magnífica. La que hoy muestras, que yo llamaría parecida a las antiguas "cracked ice" me parace francamente bonita. Además, la reutilización de antiguos sistemas de carga, como el vac tan usado en las antiguas Sheaffer me parece una vuelta al pasado pero modernizado que me gusta mucho.
Si tuviese que comprar una, como primer ejemplar de esta marca, cuál te parece más idicada???

On the other hand, I'm getting more and more curious about penbbs that I hadn't noticed before. And as you say, they give a magnificent feeling. The one you show today, which I would call similar to the old "cracked ice" ones, seems really pretty to me. The Penbbs 308 is their flagship and best selling pen. It is very reliable. If you are wanting to swap the nib to some other brand of #6, the Penbbs 480 has more cap clearance.
