- On Thursday, April 27th, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the sale of the presidential jet, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, to the government of Tajikistan. Since the beginning of his term, Mr. López Obrador has been hard at work trying to sell the presidential jet, which is registered XC-MEX. Bought by his predecessors, this widebody VIP jet was described by the president as a quote “pharaonic and indecent aircraft.”

The Mexican president has said that planes like these are for "little pharaohs". Looking at Tajikistan's president it looks like the plane has finally met its rightful owner.
What I find to be entertaining about your president's remarks is that he obviously forgets that his country's first 100% Mexican designed, developed and built aircraft just came to fruition last year, has a propeller and runs on premium automobile gasoline! What's even more entertaining is that evidently your Federal Civil Avaiation Agency, despite the lack of any industry experience as a country in building aircraft, somehow magically possesses the knowledge and wisdom to certify the airworthiness of new aircraft! Maybe paper airplanes, but not real airplanes.

I worked on this plane when it was a test plane for Boeing and also when there was sold as the Mexican bird. We called it Air Force Juan 😅

unless they are building 2, 500+ bed hospitals then the money from this plane is gonna end up in a offshore bank
Just checked they are constructing 2, 80 bed hospitals, for 92 million usd the cost for the hospital is as much as if they were building it in the US of A, mexico is cheaper, and an 80 bed hospital is gonna be a general hospital, not filled with machines which are expensive and are used rarely, those cases will be referred to a bigger tertiary hospital or specialist hospital which would have those equipments and staff, they should easily be able to construct 10-15 hospitals in this budget and size
Most of the money is to the lender the rest is for the hospitals.

A country of about 10 million residents with annual GDP of less than 9 billion dollars annually has no business buying a 787 for a presidential jet! It would be like a family of four with annual income of $5,000 per year buying a Bentley worth $200,000. Immoral.

Canada was never going to buy this jet from Mexico, it doesn't fit with how we use these transports. In Canada, we have five of the CC-150 Polaris which is a modified A310-300, and when they're not being used for transport of the Prime Minister or Cabinet they're being used by the Royal Canadian Air Force to run actual missions. Even when in VIP transport configuration, it's honestly more austere than the cheapest ticket on Air Canada Rouge.
Canada's signed a new deal with Airbus to replace the Polaris with two A330 MRTTs, and may purchase four more to have a total of six. There was never any chance of Canada picking a luxury jet that couldn't be quickly reconfigured for combat operations.
Good for Mexico. Very extravagant but I do recognize the need for some governments to have VIP jets, those that have executive functions and followed by large media contingents. Others that have less hands on executive governments and few media followers can either charter or fly commercial!

Actually the aircraft was on a lease, the payment doesnt even cover all the payments left...it was a propagandist move. Dig into how Tajikistan cant afford the jet too, but maybe Russia is using them to gain influence on Mexico.
fyi, you don't invest 10's of millions of dollars remodeling a plane that is leased...
it is not new so with depreciation.. and that fact that its interior not exactly suitable for regular commercial use..

Eh, the United States could have pounced on the opportunity to purchase the newer 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft to replace the aging AF One (a Boeing 747).
I thought they already have like 2 747-8i on the way for AF1 replacement, but though having a 787-8 for another VIP aircraft for staff and personnel for not the President but Vice President and other subordinate politicians

The president who bought this said in an interview the airplane was $103 million dollars. The plane wasn't a brand new. The $200 USD tag comes from far right Mexican news outlets who added anything that they could do the cost like fuel to make it look like it was bad deal. Also, Obrador's allegations that it's only "enjoyable" on its first and last day was an off-base point, as it does nothing to convey a private jet's primary purpose: to save time by avoiding wasted hours sitting at a public airport and/or waiting on a fleet. His take that a purchase of a plane is strictly based on one's enjoyment of the material luxury is vapid and totally ignores how much time is saved, and in the future it will no doubt net the country a higher cost after including (a) the cost of a new jet's inevitable acquisition and (b) to your point, the 60% loss on the one the country already had.

if your only looking at buy and sell price you'd be right. But if you're looking at the cost of maintaining the plane and having a full staff to run the plane, and insuring it, you would actually be taking and compounding the loss just by having it, not to mention actually using it. As the song say's: you gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away....
