There wasn't a band like Blue Cheer before them. You either like them or you hate them, but their music is the point from where something heavy becomes metal.
Some of my other favs are Toad- self titled, Bloodrock- self titled, and the elf debut with dio. And yes that cactus album is great. You mentioned the best of the best for sure Edit: oh yeah and dust! Saw it in the thumbnail
Great list buddy!!! I would definitely have hit the like button multiple times if if could!!! For years I worked as an A+R guy for Captain Trips Records in Japan. We brought both Blue Cheer and Leaf Hound over for live gigs. Small catch--Hard Attack by Dust came out in 1972. The first self-titled album was released in 1971. If I was going to split hairs with you I might take the first Bloodrock record over Lucifer's Friend or Captain Beyond.
Cheers Robert. Glad you liked the list. Re Bloodrock...I used to have the 72 live record (98 reissue) but lost it somehow as I can't find it anymore. Definitely a worthy band.
Solid list! I know & love must of these bands but will definitely need to check Hard Stuff out. As for suggestions, I believe High Tide's Sea Shanties from 1969 deserves a place on the list. That opening riff from Futilist's Lament is legendary, and although the album as a whole is kinda proggy I'd characterize it as true proto metal as well.
You`ve got it right ! High Tide are the masters. Have a look also at Tractor, Bakerloo, May Blitz, Ginhouse, Clear Blue Sky, T2 , 3 Man Army , Wicked Lady, Highway Robbery ,Wildfire, Road ,Cactus ,Last Straw etc etc.
I would say midnight witch by Ask was the first hard rocking heavy metal from Australia. Jerusalem has doom metal on some tracks like Primitive Man. Pretty dark and heavy for its time. Growers of Mushrooms is a good album reminds me of Zeppelin a little. Lucifers friend album cover looks like Uncle Fester and a very tall Raul Julia. Sir Lord Baltimore is full on Heavy Metal. One of my favorite heavy albums from 1970/71. Vincebus Eruptum is heavy metal on some sites because Sabbath pointed to them as having an influence. Pretty good but I like The Second Album better.
I think you meant Ash not Ask right? Will have to check them out! Agree on the rest even though from this lot, I would still confirm the Hard Stuff album as my favourite.
Once again, thanks a lot for the recommendations! If you haven't already, also check out the following: Bolder Damn - Mourning, 1971 Flower Travellin' Band - Satori, 1971 I'm most certain you will enjoy those! Cheers from Germany, mate!
Cool video I have to be honest .it seems like many are saying the term heavy metal didnt exist for this music then ( in the 1970s).. it actually did it just wasnt defined as it is now but the term existed. Hardrock and heavy metal would be mentioned in the same sentence at times but yes it's more defined today than it was then but even fropp from King crimson mentioned KC being a heavy metal band when red came out because he despised that prog lable .altho Jimi Hendrix was pivotal to the genre when he was asked if his stuff was heavy metal he rejected the title. My point is the term was around then. Even sabbath was described as that early on . Think about even the term NWOBM .the bands that came before them were the old heavy metal first wave sabbath , deep purple etc...
Couldnt you please mention sabbath purple zepp arrgg im very fed up with em ..mention thoug bands bloodrock lucifers friend kayak three dog nigth cubby n blizzard and more obscure late 60s early 70s bands..not those overblown sabbat dio zepp etc.they are kinda hype man!!
Deep admiration for going for the underground ones.
Sir Lord Baltimore and Blue Cheer would have to be included in any discussion of metal's foundational period. \m/ \m/
Exactly!! Pivotal albums for the development of heavy music which eventually became to be defined as Heavy Metal!!

I owned Jerusalem's self-titled in the late 70s. Primitive Man is crushing!
My favourite proto album is yet the 2nd of May by May Blitz, the drums are just amazing
Will have to give that record a listen. Cheers!

1958 Peter Gunn theme Henry Mancini and Rumble Duane Eddy 1964 as far as proto proto heavy rock tracks
Look up the track No Reason by Captain Foam. You will be blown away.
Thank god the compilation series Brown Acid exists to keep songs like that around
The Creation The Tremeloes/Hard Time , Witchcraft The Iron Wolf Frigid Pink
leafhound is very overrateed dust's 1st lp is better than the 2nd
