In this video, I take apart the Gel Blaster SURGE to see how it is made inside. The SURGE uses a gearbox-driven piston that is a typical design of gel blasters and airsoft. All the gears, piston, piston housing, and inner barrel are plastic. The motor is not a standard size that I could find. The circuit board charges the Li-ion battery through a USB C connector. Power to the motor is controlled by a MOSFET on the PCB and doesn't pass through the microswitch. This makes the microswitch last longer.

You're a life saver. Disassembled my son's gel blaster coz it won't shoot and was just making grinding noise, was losing hope on reassembling it but thanks to your video I got his blaster fixed now.

Thanks man this really helped. Few days ago my little brother was having trouble with the motor we found out it was because there was a bit of water damage and some parts started to rust, we cleaned it up a bit and now its working as good as new

So i have the starfire version of this and from a full charge u get through a full hopper and the light starts flashing red but still fires is this normal and roughly how many hoppers befor its compleetly dead
1.Is it possible to swap the battery for more reliable performance if so could you recommend any?
2. If not the battery what eles have you notice that could cause a decline in performance? Help
I have a question do you know what the two smaller wires running parallel to the main cables that run to the battery located in that front grip do? I was wanting to mod the gun and I would probably have to cut those to do it but I still want the gun to work. if they just control something negligible then I can cut them but if it does not allow the gun to work I won’t. Thank you this video has been very helpful.
The cables that run to the contacts ion the front are for their flashlight add on and as such can be cut without affecting the function of the blaster.

I thought the two contact sensors up front near the muzzle are for shot-sensing.
No, but they finally made an accessory flashlight that fits on the end and uses those contacts.
Is the motor on these replaceable? I have one that barely shoots and it takes a while to get up to speed and the motor kind of sounds like it's burned the brushes and runs slowly and barely has any power. I have a bunch of motors in a container but unsure if one would work. I happened to lose the trigger spring but I recently vacuumed my room and luckily I found it and I will be trying to fix this one. I bought another to replace this one. If I fix the first one I'll have two.
If the motor fits, and the shaft is the same size, it could work. Otherwise the next best option is to replace the gearbox.
@@engineerable I don't think that it's the gearbox. I'm thinking that these motors are driven quite hard. And another is some people keep firing the gun when the gel ammo is out.

First contact Gel Blaster and see what's up with it. It's tough to repair if it's due to the circuit board.

@@Germ17 You should contact Gel Blaster, unless you are prepared to do some soldering and hacking battery wires. Their custom battery setup makes replacement tricky.
Anybody know how to change the battery safely?

Not easily. It's 7.4 li-ion battery made from 2 18650 batteries, but the wiring is custom.
@@engineerable I see thank you. I had gotten it wet and the lights started. Dimming and it wouldn't shoot or turn on but when I plugged it in the lights will turn on but very dim

It's can't easily be modded. Buy a stronger/faster blaster that has an upgradeable gearbox.

I just got one, I just finished charging it completely, and it sounds like its fully changed based on its fast fire rate and power, but the light started blinking red literally within 10 minutes, is it something wrong with just the light or do I have a defective one with a bad battery, has anyone else had this issue before ? Yes mine started flashing red after one hopper full but would still fire but iv only used one hopper full so not sure how long before its fully dead and wont fire

This looks kinda similar to a bb gun on the inside the one that you just pull back the head and fire it over and over again.
It's basically airsoft, modified for slightly larger gel balls
that plastic gearbox wont last

@@engineerable I’m planning on buying it today a lot of people have said there gear broke really quick but I think it’s them charging it too much and holding automatic fire too long but I’ll still buy it and hopefully it holds out until your vids drop
What do I do if the gellets are leaking out the barrel?
They have not grown large enough. Leave them in the water longer or use distilled water.

@@rodrigosaucedo7361 still means that the gel balls are not growing large enough. The barrel is designed to be slightly smaller than the gel ball. A gel ball that is grown to the right size won't leak out the barrel.

can you give me a reason why it wouldn’t work if I made CAD copies of all the parts, scaled it up 500%, 3D printed and CNC’d them in stainless steel, then assembled it with a high powered spring, and 1 hp electric motor? 😂

@@engineerable no but I’m dead serious. Finding a lot of compatible larger metallic gears on McMaster. Can 3D print or have fabricated the rest. Seriously considering tackling this as a fun project. Done a bunch of research and haven’t found anyone who has attempted it before. Really can’t see a reason It wouldn’t work. Imagine using a truck suspension spring as the piston main spring and a big 5 inch diameter tube.

Yes, but you probably want to use a MOSFET to run the motor. Running the power through the microswitch will burn it out eventually. Then you will need to charge the battery directly through the 3 wire balance connection.
@@engineerable Any mosfet you recommend? At this point I might as well modify it to take a different battery when I opened it up. A little chip was fried where the positive connector from the motor is at
