Big Dog Carr was such a badass, one of the more underrated PF's of the 90';s! Despite having both the skill and ability to be a star, he usually was on a team with at least one other star scoring big, hell he was even forced to be sixth man sometimes. At the end of his career he was a key piece to that Jazz team's success in the late 90's
I think the 90s into the start of the 2000s was the peak. You still had the physicality from the 80s, and the athleticism that picked up in that decade just continued to rise. You had true, household names, the biggest sports figures in the world. The NBA was theater then. Maybe that’s my nostalgia talking, but I’m not so sure.
Charles Barkley, though the emotions got the best out of him at times and I agree sometimes John Stockton was setting illegal picks, he had great respect for him. After the series in 1997 were over between the jazz and rockets, Barkley himself said that John Stockton "is one out of 5 best players he has played against".
Gary Payton called Stockton the best point guard ever, Not the flair and the size of Magic, that's for sure, but in terms of production and consistency for his team on both sides of the ball GP's statement is surely uncontroversial. Added also Stock is one of the physically and mentally toughest guys he ever matched up against. MJ included.
Yeah man, John Stockton was super dirty. Many called him out for it and he acted like he didn't know what they were talking about. But he was also tough as nails.

Little things like this like this are what make Stockton the greatest point guard ever. It is much easier to draw an illegal screen or charging foul when you're one of the smallest on the court and so many little guys in the league today don't take advantage of that fact because they can't or are unwilling to put their body on the line the way Stockton did. This is honestly understandable since with the amount of injuries seen in todays NBA, a players body/physical well-being is oftentimes the most important thing to them as well as their team and it simply isn't worth the injury risk. That's probably true and seems to be a collective way of thinking in the modern basketball era but is also why we most likely won't see another player like John Stockton ever again. Don't get me wrong we will see and arguably have seen better passers than Stockton. I believe that is up for discussion but as far as the best pure point guard ever John Stockton embodies the definition. Built like a science teacher at a modest 6'1 and 170 pounds he was able to play with the physicality demonstrated in this video for over 1500 games while remaining practically injury free. That is what sets him apart from every other point guard that has ever played the game
There are no better passers than Stockton. That is the whole point of being number 1 in assists. More flashy, yes, but not better at passing. Flashy doesn't get you number 1. The best 3 passers of all time, as of right now, are Stockton, Kidd, and Paul, in that order.
Of the 6 Bulls teams of the 90's that won Championships, those '97 and '98 Jazz teams were the toughest opponents in the Finals. They were sharp as tacks, tough as nails, and then ran the pick and roll offense to perfection.

As a Rockets fan who hated both teams, my friends and I all thought Utah in the 98 finals - refs seemed to be trying to give it to the Bulls. MJ was always treated differently once he became the undisputed face of the league.

Perhaps Stockton's greatest asset was his physical toughness. I can barely conceive of anyone his size being slammed and elbowed by someone of BarKley's strength and shrugging it off like it was nothing. Stockton took that kind of punishment his whole NBA career. Chris Webber committed the hardest foul he could and Stockton leaped up and slapped his butt and said "Good foul." Webber later said, "Can you imagine how disheartening that was?" :))

Was that Hubie Brown calling the game? I loved his game calling. Understood the game and could explain what was going on without getting in the way of the action. Plus, he called the game honestly. If someone fouled someone he would say it. There's too many others back then and today that you can tell they got the word of which team they're supposed to favor. I've seen players knee people in the balls, throw them down, run right into them, and the announcers quickly explain it away and then never show the replay the rest of the game.

Perhaps Stockton's greatest asset was his physical toughness. I can barely conceive of anyone his size being slammed and elbowed by someone of BarKley's strength and shrugging it off like it was nothing. Stockton took that kind of punishment his whole NBA career. Chris Webber committed the hardest foul he could and Stockton leaped up and slapped his butt and said "Good foul." Webber later said, "Can you imagine how disheartening that was?" :))

Stockton is an All Time Great . . . and also All Time Great Dirty Player! What makes puts him on the Dirty Players list isn't the grabbing, nor underhanded locks. It's that he retained the "good guy image" while doing all these screen and guard shenanigans and never ("NEVER"?) getting called for it.
Half the league were dirty players! If u weren’t a dirty player,couldn’t take a hard foul or willing to fight… u were called SOFT! 😂 Stockton might have got away with sneaky calls but that doesn’t make him dirty. I’d say smart in those times.

Was that Hubie Brown calling the game? I loved his game calling. Understood the game and could explain what was going on without getting in the way of the action. Plus, he called the game honestly. If someone fouled someone he would say it. There's too many others back then and today that you can tell they got the word of which team they're supposed to favor. I've seen players knee people in the balls, throw them down, run right into them, and the announcers quickly explain it away and then never show the replay the rest of the game.
Stockton was hard as nails as well as being the only point guard that can be mentioned in the same sentence with Magic.

Stockton was low key one of the dirtiest players. Setting dirty/moving screens was an artform for him.

@@quikdeath100 yep watched him play all the time - tough as hell and pissed of a lot of players because he wouldn't give you anything. He flat out embarrassed players that could only say he was dirty to save face. Several players have commented on that including Gary Payton.
Yeah, that's what the other players understand, it takes skill and intelligence to set up those screens and not be seen as foul by the refs. Those complaining are those who does the same but do not know how to disguise or hide it and gets called on them by the referees.
Glad he and Malone never won a ring. Both players were dirty…especially Malone.
