  • By age 13, 80% of girls distort the way they look online.* Let’s change that.
Social media is a big part of young people’s lives -- but retouching apps and the pressure to post the ‘perfect selfie’ are hurting their self-esteem and confidence. Have the selfie talk with a girl you love to reverse the damage and celebrate real beauty. The Dove Self-Esteem Project can show you how.

    Let’s Change Beauty 💪💙

This made me cry. I’m 19 years old and I wish so badly I hadn’t grown up with social media. It ruined my self esteem and I became so good at editing pictures and doing makeup and loosing weight. as women we are diminished to our appearance and only our appearance. I wish I could go back and time and take my phone away.

Exactly. I've personally chosen to relinquish every sense of what society has taught us is feminine, so I could feel like my true feminine self and it's truest sense. I no longer wear skirts, nor tight pants, I have short manageable hair for once, where no makeup, no earrings, no no polish, nothing frilly or tight

I've been looking all over the Internet yet no other company could make ads that truly touched and captivated me. Especially as a teenager, who's going to show my presentation to other teenagers who I'm sure are just as media-obsessed and manipulated by the unrealistic beauty standards as me! It's not a one or two time thing either, every single project is unique and well-thought! The marketing team and PR definitely deserve a standing ovation!

Can i ask why you posted a picture of yourself on social media?
Glad i grew up as a teen through the 1980's. There was no social media for me to go on back then. So there were no problems. Maybe parents today should be keeping kids off social media. Then there would be no problems. The world is full of good people, horrible people, crazy people and evil people. Many of those people are on social media. So there will always be problems on there, just like there are out in the real world.

And in the 70’s and 80’s, we didn’t have the means. The technology and social media didn’t exist to be able to. What hurts most is that truly, you are beautiful as you are, but it’s easy to forget that.

When I was 13 and I posted a photo on Instagram where I was without makeup, girls and even boys laughed at me because I had acne, thick eyebrows and a big nose. After that, I began to makeup a lot and process photos, and then everyone immediately began to write that I had become so prettier and, in general, I had a model face. But my face was absolutely the same. Now I am 20 and I, despite the fact that I still sometimes makeup for different looks, I fell in love with myself for who I am and now I calmly go out into the street without makeup without being ashamed of it. Girls, we know we are beautiful! 💕 And if someone tells you that you are ugly, then most likely they themselves are hiding behind thousands of filters and layers of makeup, or just toxic people.

Dove, Im a 43 year old male from Canada.
I was writing a review for a friend.
Had Smurfs 2, playing on the TV in the background for some background noise.
Out of the blue, something I heard on the TV made me stop typing and watch the Television. It was a cartoon commercial and the cartoon was a young woman talking to herself (seemingly having an epiphany) about how she didnt need thumbs ups or followers, Etc. to be happy. When the commercial ended I literally clapped, with tears in my eyes and I seen that it was a Dove commercial.
I have to say, AMAZING the job you guys are doing.
Honestly, Ive been using Ivory soap for years, its scent is not too strong and it is affordable. But next time out, just based on your marketing campaign regards helping young woman. Im going to try some Dove soap (promise made) and maybe Ill like it so much Ill stick to it.
Just, Bravo to your Marketing/Advertising/Writing people. I know you guys have been doing these type of things for a while now, but today's commercial hit me different.
    Please dont stop. Please.

Thank you Dove - this is about time - I will teach my daughter that she doesn't need android type faces to dictate beauty and try and keep as far away from Social Media as I humanly can. I've managed it with my teen son I hope I can with my daughter. Its an empty way of wasting your best years. I love this ad - please keep campaigning and helping promote positive image messages. The kid in the video never needed any help to look beautiful she was perfect at the start.

At 52 I have found the liberation of a true 'don't give a s#*t' attitude. My daughter is 10, how do I get to survive long enough to know better? How do we get this message to every young person on the planet? The pressure really comes from the insecurities of others and social media has amplified that. Thank you for this powerful 60 seconds.

We have to learn to love ourselves the way we are
Next time, look in the mirror, and instead of wishing how you could change something that you deem as imperfect, look at something you love and that you admire, and tell yourself, “I’m perfect the way I am.”

This campaign has a powerful message.
Practicing body neutrality it emphasizes that regardless of how our bodies look appreciating what they can do for us is amazing sometimes you may not love your body and that's ok in fact those feelings are valid too no one is going to love their bodies all the time
it may take time to accept your body as it is. I say love is patient
    - To whoever may be reading this a determined and kind soul.

And that’s the very point of this video! Because social media is complicit in setting and projecting beauty standards that are so impossibly high that women (and men!) simply feel ugly and inadequate if they don’t come close to these ultra edited/plastic/Kardashian-esque images of ‘beauty’ that we’re force fed every single time we open Instagram. It’s creating a generation that has never been more insecure, and it’s so heartbreaking

A very important message. Although the captions identifying that there is music, this video is not accessible to anyone with a vison disability. Only once was there a description of what was on the screen (hair swooshing). Adding a video description file would make this message available to more people.

Good job Dove. Very clever and strategic. Play on human emotions to sell your own beauty products. By the look of the comments I see it's working quite well. However it in no way takes away from the message, but still great marketing. Someone deserves a promotion.

Notice how on the computer it looks like a woman yet in reality it looks like a kid. Dove is being underhanded, they clearly are different people and Dove is trying to make out kids are making themselves look older to fit in to be able to look beautiful then are groomed online by men. This is a pack of lies.
Girls love being at the centre of all and many actually suffer from HPD at the expense of there families encouraging there daughters, Nieces, Cousin's to be like this. They closely observe there accounts and get them ready for OF just a few years down the line.
A lot of normal girls on normal platforms who aren't models might say they're not beautiful but it's a ploy for men to keep away from asking them out but still to receive over flattering remarks because they LIKE IT.
It comes from themselves and you can't blame men or social pressures from causing this. This Advert is Evil and I don't like it one bit. The Music, The grown woman at the end of a particular version of this AD shown in the UK who might be masquerading as a kid. It's all creepy.
It interrupts you unexpectedly in the most inappropriate times of the day and is usually on REALLY knowing people are watching Ghost Stuff. What is this implying?
It's as bad as the baby adverts of being born. I feel like muting the sound when I see this stuff but unfortunately the family is around then watching there rubbish usually hugging the remote. I can't keep doing it either I can't pretend I haven't saw it.
I hope OFCOM decide to pull it once it receives complaints. I hope you write.... 😅

Well done Dove! Proving the modern beauty standards girls + women want + want to project is all about make-up, hair styling, hair + lash extensions for some people and clever work with lighting, filters and simply taking a selfie in the right room with the right lighting and space. Real women + girls won’t automatically wake up looking like a selfie taken on IG - I occasionally post a “lift selfie,” and it involves hair styling, make-up and selecting an outfit I have a good body image in - say it’s an optical illusion
