I use presets all the time.
I always use Argon station modules built in a closed loop. All of my disc defense stations are the same configuration. I choose the preset, orient the pew-pew end towards the gate, and it's done.
Also, every ship I buy goes to the Alliance wharf or shipyard to get upgraded to my preferred config, using a preset. I usually buy several of the same ship at a time, and I upgrade them all at once. This has become slightly more complicated as I recently started using Split Mk4 Combat Engines, so each ship has to take another trip to the Zyarth Equipment Dock for that upgrade.
I will eventually build my own ships, but I haven't gotten that far into any of my universes yet. I usually run headlong into a component shortage before I think about it. I'm going to have to become more production-oriented rather than defense-oriented.

I forgot about ALI, i guess presets for ships they sell would be worth it. Early game and Mid-game for sure. Once you have your warf and shipyard it wouldn't matter. That is a hassle to move them and equip them the way you want.

Production is your best defense! 😉

Build an Equipment Dock. Is cheaper than a wharf/shipyard and it uses less wares. Buy ships with minimum presets in the wharfs, and then a preferred setup in your Equipment Dock. AI will use it sometimes, so you even get some cash

I use presets for supplying my shipyards, the whole chain divided in six stations plus one for food. Helps avoiding the struggle of fitting the damn piers.
One recomendation, building order is very important, specially if you have more than one production module in it. Always start with a docking module, then storage (first container, then solid/liquid), pier and then the rest. L ships wont interact with your station until there is a pier, and that's painful if you want to use L miners (as you should).
Station presets carry on tonother playthroughs, and luckily if they are greyed, hovering with the cursor will tell you what module is missing. Sadly that's not a feature with ships presets, for some reason.
Don't make mega factories, better use separate stations. Building is done one module at a time, so is better to build stations simultaneously.
Some recipes share the same wares and in a supply chain, you may want to give delivery priority (for example hull parts for a wharf). You could just set a high price but that could mess up trade orders, making your ships carry 20 units of a ware to top it up. Instead, manually increase storage allocation. Automatic price works using percentage of storage occupied.

Ship-Presets, I always use them once I'm far enough into the game. Money/Rep is not always high enough in the early-game.

True it can be a hassle. Especially if there is a ship or weapon that you want but have to grind for it. Ugh!!!

i use the ship presets regular, havend tryed the station presets and i build my factorys by hand, maybe i want a specific look or want them as compact as possible or things like that.
for most of the ships i use i have a couple of presets, like a cheap trader/miner just to start once i have better standing i use a second preset with the better turrets and such. sometimes it happens that one gets shot down, its way easier to just buy a new one with a preset then to manualy switch out a few things every time i need a new ship.

I've not used the game presets. I assume it just the cheapest hardpoints possible and works up to most expensive. That is a good idea for miners or even traders.

@@T-Skillet the stock presets i also dont use, minimum is just the bare minimum to be operational, i usaly put longrange scanners and trading computers on all ships, the miners randomly find new stations wile mining random positions and from what i got the trading computer helps keep the trading data longer from the stations in range (not too sure about that), helpfull if im not having a satalite near every station ;)

Something i didn't consider. Thought the software just allowed them to make trades on their own.
