The reason it smokes like this is, when it stands on the sidestand a long time oil runs into the lower side of the engine and gets burnt when starting it the first time. BMW later fixed this

When I was courier in London in the 80's I had one of those and I had a car mobile phone fitted to it! I covered 160,000 miles on it in 3 yrs then sold it, never leave it on side stand as the oil runs into the head......I'm still running a K1200lt today and that's way heavier than the old K100RT. Enjoy it !

Just stumbled on this video... It brought back huge memories!! I used to dispatch a K100rt round London many many years ago.. It was an ex police K 100 I loved it.. I loved how big it was, how stable it was, how it used to worried cars and taxis when i followed them. Until i was side swiped by a taxi that pulled out on me.. a Huge hole in t he sump and a puddle of oil. These engine go on for 100's of thousands of miles. I replaced BMW's chocolate output shaft in a shed, so well made.. I got another and recently sold it.. BTW the stripped out K looks like a unfaired version... you may want to sell the radiator shroud, they are like rocking horse poo, you will get your money back on that item alone. Most fully faired K100Rt and LT's get stripped back to the unfaired version as the fairing is expensive to replace. no one has the radiator shroud. Secondly if you are going to desecrate the engine and put it in a four wheeled vehicle (may god have mercy on your soul) Motorworks have a kit to convert it. It quite a popular engine to put into older Mini's www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=5&NU=10&M=40&Ct=CA&SbCt=BA_10_40_CA_70

I had this exact bike until 2 years ago. Dolomite Grey. It still ran fine and had 135k on that motor. Still running for new owner. Old K bike trick to keep from smoking was to lean it to right before to left and on kick stand. I always used the center stand as the heavy bike liked to sink the side kickstand into the turf or asphalt. Classic!

I hired my daughter to drive me from Shreveport to San Diego some years ago to buy a yellow K75RT from a policeman. Great bike. It only had 20K on it. When I got home I found the local dealer didn’t want to work on it. I’m the farthest thing you’ll find from handy so I didn’t know how to keep it up. It ran fine for more than 50k before the splines gave up. I gave it to one of the guys in the local BMW riders. Lovely touring ride. Very uncomplicated for a touring mount.

The side stand on these bikes is interconnected to the clutch cable. Pulling in the clutch requires you to take the bike off the side stand and the stand then is automatically retracted by the clutch cable. That may be why you believe the clutch was frozen initially. Likely you disconnected the cable connection to the side stand and the clutch then worked. These side stands were notorious for the bike falling over and it was considered a no-no to leave one of these run when on the side stand.

I had one in 1986 to replace an R100RT. It was a swoopy sports tourer of the day. And right, the Flying Brick. Great protection from the fairing but at 5’8” I was about 2” too tall for the screen. I recall taking a photo at 125 mph in a still bubble of air. Now that would get jail time.
After the initial euphoria of a new bike wore off the seat was exposed for it’s shockingly low comfort level, this on a brand new tourer. One hour was almost the max time before pain forced a stop.
I kept it for only a year after the various novelties wore off........

That is one weird looking mini bike, I didn't think mini bikes came with a windshield!

I’ve got an unrelated challenge for you fellows. Been wanting to do this for a while but never figured out the best way. Do a belt-driven, 2 speed, manually shifted minibike. Kinda like the belt drive riding mowers. Might have to do a “clutch”pedal to disengage the belt, and two different size pulleys that can slide back and forth on a jackshaft or something. And a neutral position :-)

The clutch cable on these bikes is connected to the side stand so that as you pull the clutch in the side stand automatically goes up. So with the bike sitting on the side stand you can’t pull in the clutch and it will feel “frozen”

This answers my question about the knock in the other video. I will be parting out a 1978 Honda GL1000 this summer, 4-cylinder boxer engine, transmission, drive shaft and final drive, let me know if interested in the power train.

I hope the build is a good off road buggy. I have an 85 honda goldwing 1100 that I'm going to build and would make for a killer show down

Who's wishing that they would build an actual off road cross cart. A revamped cross cart would be awesome with the 1000 CC engine. That thing would rip. But Alas, dreams don't always come true.

I've always loved the shaft drive whirr. My dad used to have a Yamaha XJ900 and it's still the coolest sounding bike I've ever heard. Freakin' UFO man! Please try and keep the crazy transmission whine when you put it in a cart, if you can. :D

Clutch is not frozen, it is connected to the side stand. Unless you put the stand up, you can't pull the clutch...
