This is cool! I think the ds-2 sounds a bit less aggressive and more refined than the ds-1 but the ds-1 still really does a great job at creating a raw, gritty rock guitar sound.

Any distortion pedal will do. From subtle overdrive to harsh distortion sounds. Easy to emulate most anything. Get a hard distortion pedal and an overdrive. Your tones are covered.
I agree, but they've spent very little. A ds1 is cheap, and the ds2 looks used, so they've spent sfa, but yes, even a katana 50 would do better than what they have.

You mean butch vig did. Kurt had final say, obviously but Butch helped a lot. For the bridge on Drain You, it was plugged directly into the board

A little tutorial of how you connected them
First off, guitar, preferably a longer cable to a pedal on "input". Short cable from the output to the input from the pedals.
Connect pedals with 20 foot long cables at the very minimum

Its wrong way to use Ds1. You have to use Ds1 with already overdriven amp or combination with over drive pedal.
