    I have one of these in a Rossi 92 and I love it. It is a great self-defense rifle and a lot of fun for plinking. I like your terminology that it turns the .357 into a "freight train:" it does, especially the 180 grain xtp hp's - especially when you roll your own.

      It's probably the best round out of this thing especially for distance.

      Very accurate round. First shot at 80yards standing without resting gun on anything blew apart 1 gallon water jug with open sights 😊

    Just some advice: Never do a gun review if you've never fired the gun. The whole point is to know how the gun performs. You look like a paid spokes person for the manufacturer.

    The lever action was the original assault rifle developed 200 years ago. It is unique in that the tubular magazine can be loaded while shooting the rifle without removing the so called magazine. It is still one of the most owned and used rifles in America!

    I bought my 1894CS back in 1986...cost all of $180 + tax at a local K-Mart. Have used it extensively for hunting jackrabbits in the Mojave desert and it excels at that. I have no issues at all using lead cast bullets in it and it's extremely accurate with them...as well as jacketed rounds at 100 yards!
    Mine has a 3x9 original Tasco scope (Japan) and neither carbine or scope has ever failed or given me any problems!
    No other lever action carbine...that I have used..beats the Marlin 1894 when it comes to fast shooting and handling

    The Marlin 1895 CBA Cowboy Action 45-70 govt. 18.5” barrel 6+1 and you have the best lever gun a man or woman can own!! This model Marlin is like a cannon!! You have no idea until you shoot this firearm how wonderful it is!! As far as smoothing the action which a lot of people complain about being stiff the answer is use it, use it, use it!! You will find the more you fire the 1895 Marlin 45-70 the smoother and smoother it gets!! Do not “polish” anything!! Let the parts of your lever gun marry each other naturally!! Attempting to speed up this process is a mistake!!

  • @Arms4allofus

    I know of a guy here in SLC that does excellent action jobs on those marlins. He did mine when I used a marlin for cowboy action shooting, I can get you his info if your interested. Also I highly recommend the 1 piece firing pin kit for that rifle. It smooths up the action a bit and allows you to run a lighter recoil spring. Also take a look at the wild west trigger from midway USA, really great drop in trigger for the marlin. I love those guns, wish I never sold mine.

    I see a big advantage with .357mag .158gr or 125gr in mine, Not so much with .38 Special due to power burn rate's. You need to find a "safe working load" if you intend to use same ammo load in both guns. The magnum typically benefits from a slower burning powder, the .38 Special a faster burning powder, which expends itself quickly in the long barrel, but doesn't act like a flame-thower in a short pistol barrel. As you listed I can improve a 125 gr from 1400fps (handgun) to 2000fps (rifle) in .357mag. Alternately my .38 Special 125gr load goes from 1000fps to 1150fps. Great plinker load regardless, similar trajectory to a standard .22LR round with 3x the bullet weight.

    There is little, if anything that can not be handled ina self defense scenario that is handled better within AR.. I have this Marlin as well as the 24 inch version in 357, and 45 Colt. Did very well in Cowboy Action Shooting with them as well as 92 Winchester’s. I like the16 inch 92s and I am deadly fast with them . No brag. Just fact.The Marlin has an advantage in rapid reloading. It has a straight path into the chamber and a round can be thrown into the open action for quick reloads if the magazines is empty. I used this technique to rapidly clear stages with aWin 97 shotgun. Fear the person with a levergun who knows how to use it

    I just bought this rifle, made by Marlin (Remington) in NY in 2018. At first it was very rough to load and cycle, but after shooting 300 rounds and cycling the lever about a thousand times, it has smoothed out and feels similar to the Henry I have. I also cut about 3 inches off the magazine spring, which reduced the force needed to push rounds into the loading gate. I am happy with the gun after initially being disappointed. I also own a JM 336 made in 2009, and I would say the two rifles are similar in fit and finish, as well as function.

    The first thing anyone should do before even cycling a brand new Marlin 1894 is to take it down and round of the tip of the lever that engages the elevator. Otherwise a "ditch" will start to form at the turnpoint eventually causing the dreaded Marlin jam. There are good tutorials on this subject out there. Also, if one want to dry fire, one should swap out the the two piece firing pin to a one piece.

    My brother has one, or at least i'm fairly sure this is the model. When my grandfather passed away somehow my brother and I end up with this and a nice mossberg 500. At the time I had very little interest in firearms, So i just picked the shotgun because i knew what a shotgun was. Years later I fired the lever gun and realized I picked the wrong gun. I ended up eventually got into firearms, while my brother didn't really. I've offered multiple times to try and buy it but he won't budge. He doesn't even like guns. For awhile I looked online for one and didn't really want to spend $700 on one. Now when I look, if i can actually find one, they're something like $900 (or at least i think that was the case when I looked, they definitely went up in the past few years). Every time I look one up I kick myself for not picking the Marlin, I even got first pick because I was the oldest..

    Got one I bought in 1987, used - no idea exactly how old it is, but it has the brass trigger and no cross-bolt and a hair trigger. Have shot it only lightly all these years and noticed recently it became a very expensive gun on Gunbroker. I'll probably shoot it even less now. It has the finish you would prefer, and it is such a natural pointer that I have surprised myself with what it can do. But for all that, if I was a cowboy riding the range today, I'd have an AK. And 30-round mags. Unless I was hunting. Then I would have a Mini 30 with a 5 round mag.

    Good video. The comparison of the energy between the .357 from this weapon and that of an AR round was particularly helpful as I think that some people might be considering this in competition with an AR as a self-defense weapon. Videos like this would be even more valuable, though, if they included firing the weapon and your impressions regarding recoil, accuracy, and reliability. Just a suggestion, not a criticism.

    @davidharrah3703 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People criticize the fit and finish because its no longer Marlin. Thats a Remington made gun and its a piece of junk. The friction comment about the micro-groove rifling is laughable. Micro Groove barrels started because Marlin found that they were faster and cheaper to rifle. Instead of cutting each groove in a single pass separately as with Ballard rifling, they could cut all the grooves simultaneously with the Micro Groove process. The fact that it made very accurate barrels for jacketed bullets was another benefit.
    The fact that Marlin has switched back to using Ballard rifling on most of it's rifles has to do with the Cowboy Action shooters and the old wive's tale about cast boolits' inability to shoot well in Micro Groove barrels. It's a myth that just won't die.
    Later Marlin .30-30 microgroove barrels show a twist rate of 1 turn in 10.5 inches which improves accuracy with cartridges loaded to lower velocity than standard.
    I have ten different lever guns with micro-groove rifling and Ballard rifling. Velocity is not affected by either....you pulled that out of thin air sir.

    • @Porty1119
      @Porty1119 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My microgroove .30-30 shoots gas-checked cast bullets quite nicely, seems to have somewhat consistent performance to at least 200 yards. I use water-quenched wheel weights...it's an old wives' tale all right. You've got to do some fiddling to get microgroove barrels to shoot cast, but they'll do it nicely once you get your alloy figured.

  • @sharkinfested
    @sharkinfested 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The C stands for Carbine. The model of the gun has to be somewhere on the firearm and on the barrel it says 1894 - Carbine ;)
    The micro-grooving is fine and produces very accurate shooting, the biggest problem I see is that you can't shoot lead bullets out of them so reloading with cheap cast bullets is out.
    Marlin calls the regular rifling a "Ballard-type rifling" - as far as I know they coined this term.
    A .357 magnum fired out of this 18.5" barrel hits harder than a .44 magnum fired out of a revolver ;)

      I fire cast lead bullets out of mine...

    • @sharkinfested
      @sharkinfested 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andreas Falk from what I understand cast lead bullets don't engage micro grooving very well and they can skip over the rifling thereby leading the barrel and decreasing accuracy. It won't damage the gun but you won't get as good of performance out of it. Not all 1894C models have micro grooved barrels though.

    The 'C' stands for Carbine.
    Also, the finish Marlin uses is tougher than it looks. Does not need to be shiny to be totally water resistant, which the Marlin finish is. Now fit and finish is CRUCIAL. Ill fitting butt stocks is what cause the stocks to crack. The wood meeting the tang should also meet the receiver at the same time. Any gaps from tang to receiver causes weakness in the stock and from the recoil over time, it can and will crack.

    Biggest flaw is the 2 piece firing pin. Too much dry firing causes possible breakage of fire pin with out the primer absorbing the majority of energy.
    Use the cross bolt safety to block hammer from direct impact on firing pin during dry firing practice and should prolong life of rifle.

      Yep. He's conflating FPS with foot/pounds of energy. Imagine the recoil if it had what he claimed! OUCH!

    First off, NO you cannot fire a Sig .357 in this rifle because this rifle requires the ammunition to have a rim, which the Sig is rimless designed for an auto loading handgun. Although I own several Sig firearms, I do not own anything that accepts the .357 Sig, I am only assuming they would not be capable to be fired in your rifle.
    My .357 Marlin is a 1894 Cowboy in .357 & 38 Spl. However, mine was manufactured by the Original Marlin in North Haven, Conn and the "furniture" fits perfectly. DocTacDad mentioned Marlin having a bad rap for its fit n finish. That might be true since Remington purchased Marlin, but the original Marlin manufactured in North Haven had a superior overall rating on the Marlin Lever Action rifles are considered a "Work of Art" whereas Marlin took special care in the manufacturing process to make sure these rifles were made to spec and would never leave the building if they did not pass a very stringent Quality Control.
    My Marlin 1894 is a Cowboy Limited in .357 with a 24" Octagon Barrel and the finish on the Stock, Forearm and pistol grip is flawless with every piece fitting perfectly. My rifle weighs in at 6.6 lbs unloaded which is NOT heavy unless you compare it to a handgun, because one of my AR's containing lots of plastic parts weight in at 7.6 lbs, while the other AR that has the HBAR "Heavy Barrel", scope, adjustable bipod and full sling and weighs 9.4 lbs with a full 30rd Mag inserted, which could be construed as being somewhat heavy if you were carrying it around on a battlefield, but I have it setup more as a Sniper type rifle. Being I do not own anything made by Remington/ Marlin so I honestly cannot give an honest opinion. However, Marlins made in North Haven really were precision instruments with very strict care being performed during its manufacturing process.
    Something to consider, since Marlins are made of High-Grade Steel and solid wood, I do not understand how they can be considered heavy at under 7 lbs. In comparison, I weighed my Colt Python 8" Nickel it weighed 44.9ozs or 2lbs 10.6ozs and my Ruger GP-100 4" in Stainless weighed 42.6ozs fully loaded.

    I actually like the plain wood as you can use boiled linseed until you have your desired sheen, the one I have is poly coated yes it shines but you can’t do much else with it.

      TheYjmfan I just use Ballisol. I clean and lube all my guns with it and have a rag soaked with it in a tin to wipe down most of my hand tools. It works GREAT on wood and leather.

    Hey can anyone here help me? I had the dreaded jam problem on my rifle
    After following tear down instructions I have a PROBLEM! A left over tiny steel stepped PIN maybe 1/6" thick on wide portion with maybe 1/16" smaller diameter step down section on one end WHAT IS IT??? Actually the more I look at this pin? It LOOKS like a detent pin? I say that because on the thick end it has a depression! As if it was spring loaded perhaps? But from WHERE?? ...I did not even tear the rifle down much at all! ALL I did was tear down enough to clear a jammed lever ....first I tried pulling the magazine insert and spring to dump the rounds but when that failed to clear the jam I found a video and removed the the lever and carrier and of course the extractor fell out too ...(ALONG WITH this cursed TINY STEEL PIN which fell on the floor too! ) I see no where it FITS! Nor do I hear any of you all talking about it! The rifle reassembled APPEARS at least (so far) to function perfectly without said pin ...although naturally I AM reluctant to FIRE it! ALL I did was to clear the jam I needed help because I had the dreaded jam occur which I induced by trying to keep a round from chambering by holding my finger on the next round showing .. which works on some firearms bu evidently NOT on this particular rifle. Anyone here can help me? I can not find a decent "exploded parts diagram" that can be magnified etc...

    Nice to see a vid from you man! I wasn't aware that .357 magnum was that powerful out of a carbine. That's really impressive! Looking forward to see what you're going to do next. BTW what's your opinion on the Mossberg 464 SPX lever gun? I've been thinking about getting one for a while, but still on the fence since it's so different from all other lever guns I've seen. Pretty sweet none the less though in my opinion :) take care man.

      I think it add functionally to the gun; however, in the case of a lever action I like the classic look.

    • @iandavidwolfe
      @iandavidwolfe 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's exactly what I think too. I like the 30-30, but if it was chambered in .357 magnum, I'd already have one being that I can't hunt deer with a 30-30 but I can with a .357 magnum here in Indiana. Thanks for the reply DTD!

    2000 fps from a 357 magnum? Are u sure? I know you will get more velocity from it being fired from a rifle, but 80% more velocity? ?? That just seems like a lot. I could be wrong though. I just wonder how u got that information.

    • @petrosspetrosgali
      @petrosspetrosgali 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jtguns88 there are some loads in my loading manuals that get some of the light billets up to around that velocity
