I really missed the StuG III episodes of workshop Wednesdays during the brief hiatus. As much as I am fascinated by the mechanical aspects, I've realized that I enjoy watching skilled people enjoying their work and each other's company just as much. Can't wait to see the gearbox overhaul and whatever work is needed on the Maybach engine!
As a retired castrol rep it did my heart good to see the guys using a proper cutting fluid in the lathe, what a beautiful job and towards the end my late fathers words rang true, “ there’s nothing like a good lump of wood and a light tap from a heavy hammer “. 😂Well done once again.
Again, best tank content on TH-cam. Kurt I must start complimenting you. The format and editing of these has gotten really good. Please keep featuring educational bits like this one. I was glued to what Beau was doing. It's so good. Beau great work as usual. I plan to have a detailed write up of all fittings on that vehicles fenders by the time you get to that part. It's nearly identical to the very good condition vehicle at Ft. Benning. So reference is there.
Good evening from the UK I must say really enjoying your TH-cam channel. I find it more interesting than main stream TV or satellite channels. Keep up the excellent work and awesome content 👏 👌 👍.
Greetings from the States. Whether it's the music, the banter, the incredible craftsmanship, or just the camaraderie, you blokes are top notch. The AAAM is on the bucket list. Keep up the great vids!
These videos are the best part of my Tuesday evening. As tragic as any war is, I am surprised at what the Germans were able to produce, especially with all the bombing going on later in the war.
@@puebespuebes8589 not really. Vehicles were finished to a high degree. It's material quality that diminished...low quality steel due to lack of alloys.
CRAZY!! That you can buy bearings off the shelf for a 79 year old machine. I guess the seals were a different story. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Canada
agree with all of the other comments, everything you guys do is incredible. Just a bit of info talking about buying seals etc over the counter in ep10. Way back in the '70s as a young teacher at Rockhampton High School, Qld I was part of a year long plus restoration of a WW2 DUKW, largely assisted by some wonderful people from the then Rockhampton Railway Workshops. This project involved almost every trade from the workshops - boilermakers, mechanical, trim, carpentry etc., and Reason for post is that we could then go down to the local Bearing Supply Company branch and purchase all of the many uni joints and bearings and seals for the DUKW and could probably do so today. Keep up the good work! I am a GPW/MB enthusiastic, so really appreciate what you are doing, hope to visit one day.
I find watching the processes, and the skills used to bring these vehicles back to life, absolutely fascinating! I eagerly await every episode of Workshop Wednesday. Keep up the great work guys!
Yeah that gearbox with buff and shine right up.😉 If there’s anyone who can take a rusty piece of crap and make it look and run like new, it’s you guys. Best of luck. Much respect from Tennessee, USA.
Love it! Thank you and everyone there for the work on the equipment. Ah that gear box will be a cinch!! Looking forward to those videos?? Thanks again.
The transmission will be an interesting restoration all by itself. Given the incredible work to date. I'm sure it will look and work better than new. Too bad some of the surviving veterans who worked on these in the Wehrmacht motorpool couldn't have been consultants to help ya'all on these restorations. Bet they had some interesting field repair stories.
I have said it before...Best show on TH-cam. One day I will make it back to Australia and come up to Cairns to see all of these wonderful machines. Beau (sorry if I have misspelled it...Beau is how we spell my Chocolate Labradors name :) ) is a smart cookie. Its unusual to see a young bloke know so much about an obscure subject. For the gearbox. WD40 is your friend. Do they sell it in 1000 litre drums?
I love Stugday! Great work mate.. Mind you, it made me think of all those German Mechanics in a field workshop back in the day..Doing the same thing in Minus Bloody freezing snow out east.. !
Thank you guys for another incredible restoration video !. So much surprise to know that you can order those bearings even today !. Also my surprise to know the outer case of transmission seems made out of Aluminum not steel !?. Aluminum in those days must be a strategic precious material for German.🤔
Blimey !!! I thought that was a complex and demanding engineering task, like a 3-d precision puzzle. and now for the gear box next, wow, we ain't seen nothing yet !!!............
Every wednesday, you guys from down under make my day.....thabk you for your enthusiasm and your dedication for keeping these machines Alice (again) Greetings from germany!
Great work. The roller fabrication was great they came out looking like the cast units. The final drive on the STUG was interesting, had assumed it was like the tigers and was a planetary configuration not just a gear-gear reduction. The transmission should do just fine internal oiling and rust remover on the outside, so it paints better. Keep up the great work mates this will be a beautiful unit when done.
Amazing skills in bringing this relic back to life. Can't imagine the sense of achievement when that moves again for the first time! Great content. Best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧
Stunning work as usual team love seeing these bits old and new going back together. How in this universe can that gearbox be restored and working you have an incredibly skilled team
The shaft you still need to put in normally goes first due to the bearing thats at the bottom which has well at least with ours on the Nashorn a circlip that keeps the bearing on. This cannon be accessed when the shaft is in. This is unless yours is different the reason why that shaft needs to go first. Also there are a alte and neu art. 36 on the old version and 35 teeth on the new big gear. The shaft then looks the same but has 2.12mm difference in the diameter on the 9teeth gear. Apparently there where during the war problems with material quality which can result in catastrophic damage so maybe a hardness test could be smart.
@@Jeales12 Ok missed that one. not the choice i would make with these parts but hey they are doing the job so their choice. By the way to make it les confusing i'm Robby van Sambeek. just using my youtube acount.
Very interesting how you could use so much of the original parts including the bolts and more. Of course you had to install new roll bearings and the sealing. Getting really excited to see the next video regarding the final drives but I'm very curious how it will done to put in working order the gearbox. Good work 👍👍👍
It would have been a good idea to load that bearing with grease while it was in your hand & put some green seal retainer on those seals to stop them from moving.

The gearbox top cover will buff out. No worries.

You guys are the bee's knees. You ROCK!
They must have the oil with the secrete herbs and spices.

Wednesday used to be "hump-day." But now it is "Kurt from Auls Armour Day." Loving it!
Kurt when you get Married you should use the Panther as the wedding vehicle people could tie 44 gallon drums to the rear 😂
Thank you for explaining why the parts were not cast. The handcrafted new parts are amazing!
I can watch this all day.
Lucky Australia went metric! Off the shelf bearings!

Incredible how much work is involved to restore this Stug, especially being that eventually it will be a running example.
It's glorious to see the detail they are going to, no cutting corners in that shop.

@DE yes but german tank produced near the end of ww2 where of extremly poor quality.

Helps that it's metric. Decent chance you'd be fvcked if the system was designed using the Imperial system.
Thanks for putting this series together and many thanks to the guys for explaining it all as it goes together! Highlight of my Wednesdays!
Get the wd40 ready boys many thanks great video as always.

“Drop of oil, it will be fine” legend😁😂Great work and great entertainment, thank you.
Fascinating stuff! It great to see the bearing and drive sprocket assembly go together. Another Wednesday highlight.

I must say, the camera work on this series is first rate.
love the time lapse, i could watch it all day. Great work Beau and Glenn. Beau hope u did not pay much for that haircut bro
A price that was prohibitively expensive and a very long lead time is a nice way of saying that they didn't want to take the job. Very tactful, Kurt.
Proper craftsmanship there,well done!

I was half expecting to hear the soundtrack from Psycho when you were showing the transmission. Oh the horror.
Ending creepy music - classic touch. :-) Love it!

I'm so excited to see a new upload. Seeing this helps keep me motivated on my car restomod. It ain't a tank but still a fine piece of machinery
Amazing seeing the final drive be reassembled. It is unbelievable what good condition some of the parts are 80 years after they were built.
Thanks guys for providing my Stug fix...

Fascinating to watch the lathe work and the construction.

Awesome work guys, love watching the progress.
Thanks again for your great video can’t wait to see you guys in person later this year thank you from cold old Melbourne
Incredibly complicated mechanism for a front line was machine! Must have been a complete nightmare to maintain in the field. Kudos to your mechanic!
that ending was awesome!

Love the magic. Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
