    +Kathy Anderson, I must say thank you very much for making this theory make sense to me I swear! I studied this theory in university twice... yes... twice and always seemed to be confused every time. It made no sense to me my lecturers did not make it easy at all since us, teachers, are required to do Psychology to an extent which was very intimidating for us. Thanks a lot girl! sincerely from a Trinidadian teacher!!!

    But how could people diagnose what sides they are on? There isn't any specific event or experience I could refer to. For example, by the age of three, I could take showers by myself, but I couldn't to go bed by myself. There were both a sense of autonomy and shame & doubt. Which standard should I refer to, if there is a standard?

    Damn that picture reminds me of alot of bad things XD
    The basic trust makes me think of Day care centers and how that must really hit negatively as the child experiences it as abandonment as shown in research.

    • @bbtwin5349
      @bbtwin5349 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first stage about trust is actually already met before a child is old enough to go to daycare. Stage 1. Basic Trust VS. Basic Mistrust: Infants who are only a few months old either develop trust or mistrust towards their parent/caretaker. The outcome depends on how often and how appropriately their parents respond to their different cues (types of crying; hungry cry, angry cry, uncomfortable cry) in order to meet their basic needs. This stage also determines the type of attachment an infant develops towards their parents, known as the Attachment Theory created by Jean Piaget which occurs simultaneously with Erik Erikson's Stage 1. from his Psychosocial Theory of Development. These challenges in development both occur during infancy which is before a child would be old enough to go to daycare. A toddler on the other hand would be in Stage 2. Autonomy VS. Doubt and Shame, where they learn potty training and self-control of their body. At this point many toddlers may be put into a daycare, some may be as young as 2 years old and still in this second stage.
      Abandonment:
      Likely, results from insecure attachment, when a toddler experiences high distress when separated from their parents. If a child is securely attached they are moderately distressed from separation but they would understand that even though their parents are gone, they trust their parent to come back for them since their needs were always met from Stage 1. of development. Daycare can also be important in child development as daycare workers teach children to respect and trust other people as well as learn how to socially interact with others (other kids or children).

    Does each stage have exponential impact on the next, or do they sort of linger before they pop up again? Like if an adolescent experienced guilt, will that be present as a major condition for the rest of development, and more so, do other stages rely more heavily on one trait than another?
    It seems like basic trust is the crux of every stage.

    Hi Professor Anderson, I am Victor - an HD major. I enjoyed your video lecture. I have a question...has there been research on the distinction between Erikson's stages of development considering gender differences? If so, what can a middle aged male who is functionally solid at the generativity stage yet, emotionally still suffering from the after effects of basic mistrust? This has been a question asked of a therapist. No successful correctable methodology has yet to be given.

    I am 25 years old in Step 6, however I always wish I could jump to step 7 reason why by that step I already reach my goals, what is my goals to become a college professor teaching communication I love teaching and it will be a pleasure teaching at a university and a junior college, currently working on a bachelor and later working on a master's I will not be happy until my goals are complete and achieve, however I need to focus right now sure that doesn't mean to not throw my goals in the garbage, yes I can be a college professor but it will come when is the right time.
    Let's suppose my dream comes true I am now a college professor teaching communication I love my job I am happy, and having a family of my own, and living a normal life, however something is missing I didn't enjoy my youth, and now I feeling the consequence I can't go back in time, it will be wierd that at 40 or 41 I dress like a 21 or 25 year old the students will look peculiar and strange all because I wanted to skip a step.

    • @CircumcisionIsChildAbuse
      @CircumcisionIsChildAbuse ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I think the video fails to acknowledge is how each stages crises is being handled and from WHERE. The first stage for example is resolved entirely out of the individuals control from the parents, the parents allow the child to grow or not. But when you get to adulthood, your source of growth comes from friends and colleagues, which is why isolation is the negative aspect of the crises. An isolated adult cant grow into the next stage without extreme amounts of internal effort.
      So with regards to your comment, theres no skipping stages. You can transition faster or slower, sure. I mean, there are PLENTY of old adults who use their free time to experience their adulthood.
      But the thing is, when you ask people on their death bed about their regrets "I wish I worked more" is never on it. Once you obtain a goal, you need another goal, else you're stagnant. That's why if you failed to raise kids well, you have nothing to do in your elderly years that gives you a sense of purpose. And to avoid despair, you become either enmeshed in something that gives the impression of ego integrity (like suddenly finding religion 70 years later) or become embittered. All to cope with the despair of your failure to grow.
      So you'll stay a young adult, or teenager, until you develop. That's how you end up with adults who act like children. That's how you see adults having temper tantrums like 5 year olds, at these stages of development, they failed to be provided with what they needed to grow into healthy individuals. Precisely why cultural loss of family structures is a pretty good reason why we see a massive spike in personality disorders, ADHD, depression and suicide rates.

    referring to what Freud said, you made a mistake in the first stages. If an infant is fed any time it wants to be, it'll result in a disturbance in the oral phase (I'm studying in german so Idk if what I say is this easily translated), which will show itself in bossy, demanding and whiney behavior due to a low tolarance for frustration. You are basically messing up your child if you forfill their wants as soon as they want it.

    • @chinacisneros9808
      @chinacisneros9808 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, very well translated. Keep in mind that she is only sharing the "theory", Erikson never stated that these were facts. As new information emerges, the theories will change. Benefits of being in our day in age #blessed
