    Nice muller, I wanted to try and find one, but ended up just getting a cheap cement mixed and welding in a couple tabs in two spots on the bottom to make sure the sand didn't just slide around, and I have 3 bocce balls rolling around in it, it actually works pretty good.

    Good job on the video Perry. You covered the features well. The Focus 1 driver for the motor is industrial quality. There are three potentiometers down the right side of the board. The top one controls the minimum speed and the bottom one adjusts the max speed. The middle one (IR comp) adjusts the max current for the motor. You could turn that one down so the motor will stall out before things get bent. The stainless plows are the weakest link on it now and I bent them a time or two when I was testing it out. The 20" diameter coulter blade on the bottom of the drum provides stiffness and a wear surface for the wheel.

    Been a long time coming, congrats. It looks really well built. A game changer for sure, especially since you are selling sand now! Do you notice any difference in your sand's performance? Some guys who have gone from making sand by hand to using a muller have found they can decrease their clay content and improve permeability due to the increased effectiveness of mechanical mulling. Another friend's homemade VonTorne muller a chain drive but no shear pin on the drive mechanism turned itself into a steel pretzel in about a half a second when a piece of tramp metal in his sand jammed up one of the scrapers... Your friend obviously does very nice work so I assume he probably included something like a shear pin that simply wasn't mentioned. Otherwise it really could get scary! Anyhow, I'm rambling on as usual, enjoy never having to hand-mull again, and keep your fingers out of there! 😄👍

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suppose a rambling comment warrants a rambling reply 😄
      I haven't noticed any difference in the sand yet. I'm actually still playing with clay ratios and moisture content. Some day I'm going to have to visit a foundry and touch their sand.
      Man turning itself into a pretzel would suck big time. I actually replaced one of the blades today with a thicker piece of sheet meta. The original thin piece of stainless would bend under load and wrap itself around the rod holding it. This would in tern caused a great deal of conflict between the side of the muller and the bent blade. I told the guy that built it what I did and he warned of the possibility of it causing problems if it bent. So far I mulled two loads today with no indication of movement in that blade. Fingers crossed and eyes wide open.
      You know, we talked about a shear pin during the build. I'll have to check back with him to see if it got put in or if I can put one on the big sprocket under the muller tub.
      The other thing I'm working on is putting a big fat kill switch up on top. The on/off switch is way too hidden.
      There, now we're even 😄

    Nice muller, sounds like it’s very quiet.

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally it is pretty quiet. If a misadjust a blade to drag on the bottom or too close to the side (the barrel isn't perfectly round) it rubs and can make a fair amount of noise. But it things are set up right, it is pretty quiet.

  • @Preso58

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late rely mate. Yeah the chain is nice. It got loose the other day and jumped off. I think I've got it adjusted properly now. I replaced one of the blades with heavier gouge steel today as well. The big one that pulled sand in from the outside of the tub was bending in half on me. This one won't bend but I have to be really careful to keep an eye on it so it doesn't slowly twist the rod and turn itself into the tub. I don't think that will happen as the other end of the blade is longer thus... thusly??😄.. applying pressure away from the tub wall.

    Although your Mueller is very nice it isn't the scariest. The scariest used rototiller blades on a horizontal shaft inside half a barrel. Talk about taking your arm off! It would've turned it into hamburger. It was reversible for breaking up chunks then doing the actual mulling in forward. What I liked about the design was its incredible simplicity. It was supposed to work well.
    " A friend of mine built it" I'm not sure if that counts as homebuilt???
    It is the best kind though!

    • @swdweeb
      @swdweeb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you said, it is homemade, it just wasn't made in my home. 😄
      The "scariest" part was a suggestion I got from TH-cam, I don't know why I ever listen to them. They said you have to come up with provocative titles or thumbnails to get people to click. It didn't change anything so I'm back to just naming things what they are. If people want to watch, great, if they don't, oh well. It's not like I make a living off of this.
      Oh yeah, and I had recently had a conversation with my boss in the UK where he told me he was absolutely terrified about anything guns. When I saw the 10mm casing in the funnel, I thought of him.

For example www.flsales.com/listing/simpson-no-5-porto-muller-s-n-e185904/ I get emails from these guys all of the time. I've never bought anything from them so I can't vouch for them. The other, and probably best option is to see if you can find someone to fabricate it up there. I expect building a custom one will be less than the shipping of a muller from the lower 48.
