This Guthrie Lick is a bit more accessible, but was important as it introduced to me the idea of shifting pentatonic boxes DURING the lick.

i remember learing almost this exact lick in Martin Miller’s fresh ducks solo and was very inspired by the horizontal plus vertical movement! Good work as always!

Man, that guitar looks stunning 🙀🙀🙀 and that way of playing is so funny, I've been doing something similar, and I've "unlocked" the fretboard more than I expected, the best thing is that it's so simple to do that almost feels like magic hahaha.

I saw that lick on a TH-cam video of Guthrie running through a few soloing ideas and licks. Lots of cool stuff (as you'd expect!) but this lick is the one I remembered and use quite a bit.

Funny how people have different taste. I thought that looked horrendous. Don't really have a problem with the color itself, but the finish on it makes it look like ugly cheap plastic, at least through the screen, never seen one in person.
Love the Simple part/Pentatonic, at the beginning and the slidy version you show at about 6:55>and then show again at the end. Nice opening too. Especially the part 1:10 to 1:13.
John, great lesson. Are any of those hammer ons and pull offs or is it all just picking and the slides into different position?

If you want a variation on that lick, you can play it with the slur on the 1st finger (or left most assuming RH) and move down the fretboard vs up. You can move either way depending on which part of the neck you want to navigate to (and how many iterations you need).
