  • We take a close up on the history of The Topanga Mall, located in
Canoga, CA. Sharing all the pictures I could find online. Did you know the Topanga Mall has been around for so long? If you have old pictures you would like to share, long ago before the mall has remodeled, message me! We would love to see!

I grew up in northeast Los Angeles, and remember going to Topanga Plaza in the early days. At that time, you could see the mall from the 101 freeway. Back then, I often wondered why they built a huge mall in the middle of nowhere, since most of the surrounding land at that time was agriculture. I had always thought that mall, back in the 1960’s and 70’s was so modern and futuristic. I visited the mall back in 2018 or 2019 and did not recognize any original parts of the mall. However, at that time, the original Broadway building was still there but looked abandoned. I believe that is where they put the entertainment area? The current mall seems way too complex and is just like any other large mall in the US. I liked the original mall best, and did not know that Victor Gruen had designed it. His firm also designed one of the very first enclosed malls in the US. I do however, like the newer outdoor part of the mall. Glad to see this mall is thriving in this age of online shopping and dying malls.

aww thank you for sharing your story with us! you're so lucky that you got to really experience the mall back when it was cool. I only remember the late 90's version and I miss when it looked like that. I just recently went back to the mall, and all the stores have switched to more "high end" (all my favorite stores are slowly going away over there) :(

I attended Canoga Park High from 1969 to 1972 and I remember when the students were keen on having lunch at the mall which was across Vanowen St. The campus security put a stop to it by allowing student to leave campus but didn't allow them back in and the LAPD would catch the students crossing Vanowen St. and ticket them. The jay walking laws were very well enforced in LA.

This takes me back. Going there during lunch period from CPHS. Wallach's Music City..... Don Paul's Seven Kitchens -- the food court next to the ice rink..... you could watch the skaters while eating. Each counter had a different "cuisine" (pizza, Mexican, Italian). My brother worked there in the mid-70s. The cool oil fountain. And the bird cages and aquarium in the May Company court. And the Jolly Roger restaurant. Topanga Plaza sure seemed to have more charm back then (or maybe I'm just being nostalgic).

I remember those days. I'd go ice skating at the mall when I was in high school and loved it! I was sad when they closed it. And the fountain was really beautiful. So quiet and unusual. Thanks for the memories!

You're welcome! It's great to hear that my video brought back fond memories for you. The ice skating rink and fountain were definitely special features of that mall, and it's a shame they're no longer there. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me!

I spent my entire youth in the 70’s and 80’s here. I miss the old mall. Now I get lost in there 😂 I worked at The Broadway when I was in high school.

It's amazing how much things change over time, isn't it? The mall might be different now, but it's great that you have such fond memories of your time there. And how cool that you worked at The Broadway back in high school!

My brother and I used to ice skate at Topanga Plaza in the late 70's. I remember stopping by one time in the 80's to find it was no longer there.

That sounds like a wonderful memory! It's always bittersweet when places we hold dear from our past are no longer around. It must have been quite a disappointment to find out that the ice skating rink was no longer there. 🥺Thank you for sharing your memory with us!

I remember the rain fountain when I was a kid. My mother told me don’t lick the rain water which was actually some type of oil.
