I've tried several methods in cooking chestnuts with varying success... the best results I've had (without a fire) is using this method:
Cut the chestnuts; boil them for a couple of minutes (the water is supposed to soften the membrane around the chestnut apparently); put under grill/broiler or super hot oven (keep an eye on them). When they start to pop, and the edges of the cuts start to curl and burn, they're done. Pop them into a tea towel and use the tea towel to help peel them (so you don't burn your hands). The most important thing is the quality of the chestnuts you buy - they need to be large, shiny and not have air pockets (should not be too squishy - they should be firm)

You are the only other woman that I have seen - besides myself - who is excited to get tools as a gift! I have a "Little Girl Tool Box" (my name for it not my fellas) that all fits into a bright red plastic toolbox and lives in the bottom drawer of my kitchen island. They are always where they should be, are not too heavy for me, and make it super easy for me to get stuff done.
Another one of my favorite presents was a wet-dry shop vac. Next on my list is a replacement hand held vacuumn to clean my cabinet drawers with. :) Girls with tools rock! I've been meaning to ask you about doing a video of your freezer storage techniques...?

How I cook my chestnuts.... I cut the top point off, the very top. I slice the bottom where it's a different color from the rest. Just a little don't waste the chestnut 😉 and then I make a slash down the center just to score the outer skin. Then I bake them and once the come out I clean them. But the cuts made at the bugging help like pull the skin and you can easily take it off. So far 30lbs of chestnuts for the season. My family loves them. Good luck.

The cuts might be the trick! We were using a chestnut cutter but it just makes an X on the nut

+The Vitales my mother in law uses that because she doesn't like to take the time at the beginning but it really does make a difference. We live in jersey also and the chestnuts we get here in the states aren't great but I also found that getting them delivered from a farm directly are the best. I ordered mine in September and we still have loads. Good luck!

Guys the trick for the chestnuts to peel off easily is to roast them and then cover them to cool down a bit so that they steam. After 5-10 min of being covered you can peel them easier and they're not piping hot :) good luck!

My Italian neighbor showed me how she does her chestnuts - she simply cuts the ends off then she places them on the top shelf next to the broiler. She broils them until they the brown shell is turning black then she takes them out. The shell comes off really quickly and the meat is lightly brown and yummy.

we always used to boil our chestnuts. i'd never heard of them being roasted. after we'd boil them we'd bite down in the middle, split it in half and push each segment from the bottom so that the actual chestnut would slide up. that's how we ate ours. no peeling, no hassle, still delicious.

That cranberry stuff is just like cordial or "squash" as we call it in the UK. You get a glass and fill the concentrate to about 1cm to 3cm (it depends how strong you like it) then post cold water to the top and it's so refreshing with ice :) Orange is a very popular flavour but most popular is black currant flavour :) xxx

The GOP debate was a waste of time. The moderators get false information and try to push them on the politicians. and yes, the Mainstream Media is the problem. they want to focus on frivolous things instead of actual problems and solutions. the only person I could trust with the economy is Paul. he's probably the most educated person on the GOP lineup. I wish people would look past looks and who they feel looks presidential and actually listen to solutions. .

You can actually cook them in your barbecue as well top them with salt, do a cut across on them and you should have delicious chestnuts. That's I always seen them being cooked back home in Portugal. :)
They usually have them in a clay pot that is specially made for the chestnuts, but if you have a net or something you can put them on top without falling you should have delicious chestnuts in minutes. Hope it helps!

The only thing different about the book recipe is really taking out the orange and then using a different kind of apple. But she said in the video to bake it at 375 for 40 minutes, in her book she said to bake it at 400! BIG DIFFERENCE!!! The oats burned and the apples were overcooked...ugh... :(
